PROBLEM:       A buffer overflow exists in a function called by the suid root 
               program dtprintinfo. Dtprintinfo graphically displays the 
               status of print queues and print jobs. 
PLATFORM:      HP-UX versions B.11.00, B.11.11, B.11.22 
DAMAGE:        A local user can potentially gain root access. 
SOLUTION:      Apply appropriate patch. 
VULNERABILITY  The risk is MEDIUM. It is possible for a local user to gain

 SSRT3589 Potential Security Vulnerability in dtprintinfo

NOTICE: There are no restrictions for distribution of this
Bulletin provided that it remains complete and intact.

The information in the following Security Bulletin should be
acted upon as soon as possible.  Hewlett-Packard Company will
not be liable for any consequences to any customer resulting
from customer's failure to fully implement instructions in this
Security Bulletin as soon as possible.

PROBLEM: A buffer overflow exists in a function called by the
         suid root program dtprintinfo.

IMPACT: A local user can potentially gain root access.

PLATFORM: HP-UX versions B.11.00, B.11.11, B.11.22.

SOLUTION: Install the applicable patch:

           B.11.11  PHSS_29371
           B.11.22  PHSS_29373


AVAILABILITY:  The patches are available now on

    A buffer overflow exists in a function called by dtprintinfo.
    The can potentially be exploited to gain root access.

    The SSRT thanks Davide Del Vecchio for reporting this
    potential vulnerability to HP.


     The following is a list by HP-UX revision of
     affected filesets or patches and fix information.
     To determine if a system has an affected version,
     search the output of "swlist -a revision -l fileset"
     for an affected fileset or patch, then determine if
     a fixed revision or applicable patch is installed.

     HP-UX B.11.00
     fix: install PHSS_29367 or subsequent

     HP-UX B.11.11
     fix: install PHSS_29371 or subsequent

     HP-UX B.11.22
     fix: install PHSS_29373 or subsequent


 B. Recommended solution

    Install the applicable patch:

           B.11.00  PHSS_29367
           B.11.11  PHSS_29371
           B.11.22  PHSS_29373

    Until the patch can be installed the problem can be
    worked around by:

       chmod 555 /usr/dt/bin/dtprintinfo

    After this change only the root user will be able to
    use dtprintinfo with full functionality.

    The Security Patch Check tool can verify that a security
    bulletin has been implemented on HP-UX 11.XX systems providing
    that the fix is completely implemented in a patch with no
    manual actions required.  The Security Patch Check tool cannot
    verify fixes implemented via a product upgrade.
