Grandma Houston's Christmas Loaf Candy

1 lb or 2 cups of sugar
1 bottle or 1 cup half and half
1/2 cup white Karo corn syrup

Mix all ingredients well.  Cook slowly to the soft ball stage,
stirring often.  Take from fire and let stand 5-10 minutes.  Add:
1/2 cup chopped walnuts or 1/2 cup chopped dates

Stir until thick enough to pour into loaf tin.  Let cool.  Cut
into chunks with a knife.
