A         An Instinct for Murder

Story:  During the opening theme song two men are murdered simulta-
neously:  One by switching off the air supply of the man's space suit 
while in orbit, and the other on Earth by men in scuba gear drowning 
their victim during his daily swim.  Both are judged accidental 
according to both police forces (European and Star Cop) because there 
were no witnesses to either death.  Chief Superintendent Nathan Spring, 
of the London police force assigns Inspector Lincoln to the drowning 
case, against his own commander's orders.  In space, Theroux believes 
that the space suits are malfunctioning more than normal, even though 
the percentage of suit failures remains constant.  the traffic 
controller believes the Russians, who service all the suits for space, 
are at fault.
          Nathan Spring, in a meeting with his commander, finds out 
that he has made the short list for the job of Commander, International 
Space Police Force, a job he was forced into signing up for.  The 
commander said it was "in his best interests".  So thereafter he begins 
his training.  On his last leg of training he takes a shuttle to the 
European Space Station Charles De Gaulle, where Representative Lars 
Hendvorssen dies due to "suit failure".  While on the shuttle back to 
earth he hears a news bulletin, which says he will be taking over the 
case.  Meanwhile, Brian Lincoln is finding out more facts on the 
drowning case.  Nathan calls Theroux down to Earth to discuss the 
Hendvorssen death, and his views concerning the suit failures.  After a 
little more training, both go back to the space station, where Nathan 
asks his personal computer "box" to run a list of all Star Cop 
personnel and their political and/or commercial ties.
          During his solo space suit flight he is attacked by two men 
but he punctures their suits with a medical lazer.  Theroux is also 
threatened by the controller at gunpoint, and almost forced out the 
airlock but Nathan was there in time to knock the controller out.
          Back on Earth, Nathan is forced to accept the job of 
Commander of the Star Cops, because Lincoln did indeed solve the 
drowning case, which was really murder.  Rumor has it that the Russian 
technician who serviced Hendvorssen's suit was executed for "murder by 
negligence.  If his former commander decides to go see him in space 
some time,  Nathan promises he will make sure he gets a reliable back 
pack.



B         Conversations With the Dead

Story:  Four days before reaching the trajectory correction point, the 
engines of the interplanetary shuttle Daedellus heading for Mars start 
up, sending the ship and its two passenger crew out of control into 
deep space without fuel to change its course.  The Americans launch a 
satellite which they claim is commercial in nature, but if any other 
nation tries to inspect it, it will be seen as an act of war.  
          On Earth, Lee, Nathan's long time girlfriend is murdered in 
his flat.  Nathan is a suspect due to the fact that his code appears of 
a message that was sent to her which was to delay her leaving the house 
while the killer came in.  Inspector Devis instructs Spring to remain 
on Earth while his investigation takes place.
          While moving Star Cop HQ from the Charles De Gaulle to Moon 
Base, he finds out that the Daedellus was carrying cryogenic equipment 
en route to the Mars Base, which is owned by the Moon Base coordinator.
He also finds out that Mike and Lara were lovers and that they should 
not have been on the same shuttle together; too many distractions.
          Back at his house, Nathan receives a call from a man claiming 
to be Lee's murderer.  Telling "Box" to trace the call, he goes to the 
park where the call originated from.  There he is attacked by a street 
punk, but the real killer poisons him before he kills Spring.  Corman, 
Devis' assistant comes to Nathan's aid, firing shots at the killer but 
missing.  Nathan argues with Devis because the department does not have 
the funds to continue this part of the investigation, saying it was 
just another park killing.  Nathan decides to join Theroux back in 
space.
          The Moon Base coordinator suggests using his cryogenic 
equipment which is fully functional to keep Mike and Lara alive, while 
the air within the freighter is blown out an airlock to change its 
trajectory.  The maneuver succeeds, sending the ship into an orbit that 
will return it to a recoverable position in eight years.  When Nathan 
returns he discovers that the ship's computers were re-programmed by 
the coordinator so the passengers would be forced to use his equipment 
to survive.  He also discovers that Lee's killer has followed him into 
space, along with Inspector Corman, who says the man's name is John 
Smith.  Smith tries to escape in a shuttle and heads toward the 
secret American station, with Spring, Theroux and Corman following.  
Having been contacted by Nathan Spring earlier, the Americans destroy 
Smith's shuttle with a missile.  Smith and Corman were both British 
intelligence agents using Spring and Lee's murder as an excuse to get 
on the station.
          Nathan goes back to Earth to see Lee's grave, where he meets
Devis again.  Devis apologizes for not knowing about Corman and tells 
Nathan that he plans on bringing charges against her, possibly costing 
him his job.  Devis asks Nathan for a job in the Star Cops.



C         Intelligent Listening for Beginners

Story:  At the Bank Side Chemical plant, the plant computer receives 
the message "O Rose thou art sick" and suddenly it starts to 
malfunction.  All of the plant's procedures go haywire. Prior to the 
destruction of the factory, the computer displays the message "The 
invisible worm that flies through the night."  Then the plant goes up 
in a chemical fireball.
          On Moon Base, Nathan Spring has discovered two corrupt cops.  
He plans to fire them as soon has He and Theroux get back from Outpost 
9, where they have been asked to meet Dr. Chandri.  Chandri and his 
people are working on a very sensitive project, concerning carrier 
waves.  Nathan deduces that they are developing an intelligent 
listening system that will be able to monitor the entire world's 
transmissions and pick out whatever is relevant to the needs of its 
operator. Chandri found out with his system that the anarchist group 
The Black Hand Gang has threatened to hijack a personnel shuttle while 
in orbit.  But Nathan believes that there is something that Chandri 
isn't telling and mentally notes that he'll have to return.
          Back on Earth, another computer system receives the "Rose" 
message; this time, it's the London Underground switching computer.  
When that goes offline two of the highspeed subways collide, killing 
numerous passengers.  After the destruction of the computer memory the 
"Invisible worm" message is displayed.  
          When Spring returns from Outpost 9, Pal Kenzy is in his 
office, waiting there to sell him a new lazer pistol developed by one 
of her contacts, the Pacific Allied Consortium.  Spring has other plans 
for her, and shows her a tape of her trying to force payment protection 
from one of the new recruits.  This "new recruit" is none other than 
Inspector Colin Devis, a man described in the past by Nathan as "a 
cretin's cretin".  He fires Kenzy and sends Devis back to Earth to the
Allied Pacific Consortium's main office to purchase the lazer pistols 
directly.  He also promotes David Theroux to Chief Superintendent- his 
second in command.  While on Earth, Devis finds out that the guns were 
developed by Dr. Michael Chandri, a fact that is missing from his 
personal records.  "Box" explains to Nathan that the messages that are 
being displayed by the malfunctioning computers are from a poem by 
Blake, a poet whom Chandri was fond of.  Nathan goes back to Outpost 9.
          When he gets there Chandri shows Spring the chip which has 
the "Invisible worm" virus on it, and explains that it was he who has 
been the cause of all the destruction.  He also explains that the 
intelligent listening device is a failure- the information concerning 
The Black Hand Gang was from his government.
          As Devis returns to Moon Base in a shuttle, he meets up with 
Pal Kenzy again.  As they reach orbit, the shuttle is hijacked.  Both 
Devis and Kenzy cooperate and save the shuttle from the hijackers, 
becoming heroes.
          Chandri explains to Nathan his plan to set his computers "on 
the trail" of the worm virus, but when the virus finds his computer the 
entire outpost will be destroyed, "proving" the intelligent listening

system was a success because there would be nobody left alive to 
disprove it.  Chandri sends the message "O Rose thou art sick" 
throughout his computer, activating the virus within.  The two of them 
fight, and in the end Nathan shoots Chandri.  Nathan escapes before the 
outpost explodes.
          Back on Moon Base, Spring and Theroux watch a news conference 
where Kenzy praises the Nathan Spring and his leadership, making it 
pretty much impossible for him to fire her.




D         Trivial Games and Paranoid Pursuits

Story:  An ejected space station module is found floating toward the 
sun, bearing the number "OMZ13".  A woman on earth is trying to contact 
a Dr. Harvey Goodman, claiming to be his sister.   She says he leased 
out capsule "OMZ13" on the American space station Ronald Reagan, but 
there seems to be no record of his ever being on the station since it 
was put there.  
          Kenzy is complaining about the position she has been assigned 
to since her return, but she refuses to resign.  The Americans refuse 
to allow Star Cop personnel any offices on their station due to the 
resignation of Inspector Kirk Hubble, so Nathan decides to go and talk 
with the Commander of the Space Station Ronald Reagan.  The new Moon 
Base coordinator comes to the Star Cops office to get acquainted, but 
because he is Russian, they treat him with tolerance at best.  While he 
is there Dilly Goodman calls and reports that her brother Harvey is 
missing from the Ronald Reagan, so Kenzy goes to the station to tell 
Spring, and Theroux goes Earthside to interview Miss Goodman.
          When he goes to her house, Theroux is knocked unconsious.  
When he recovers he ficds out that the house has been on the market for 
over a year, and that no one has bought or lived in the house for that 
amount of time.  On the Ron Reagan, Commander Griffin tries to bribe 
Spring into dropping the Goodman case, saying if that was done he would 
allow Star Cop personnel to reside on the American station.  When 
Spring says he doesn't know anything about Goodman, Kenzy enters the 
room stating it was her case and shows Griffin a recording of the 
bribe.  Griffin agrees to explain all.  It seems Goodman was working on 
a space virus that got loose within the research module, so they 
jetisoned the module toward the sun and erased all record of Goodman 
ever coming to the space station.  On moon base, Krivenko stops the
space salvage crew from opening the module.
          Spring finally meets Krivenko on moon base, just as Theroux 
comes back from Earth.  The case is solved, but he still couldn't find 
any reference to Harvey's sister, Dilly.  Spring, on the other hand, 
does know her and calls her to do something when Commander Griffin goes 
Earthside.  When they do go, Dilly is at the space port.  She turns out 
to be a reporter for the World Press, and she, with a group of other 
reporters begin an impromptu press confrence in the space port 
concering the illegal space virus research that was being done on the 
Ronald Reagan, breaking the story to the public.
