STAR TREK: "The Once and Future Starship" 8/9/91 - SCENE 3 1.

                            SCENE 3

FADE IN:

EXT. SPACE - THE TWO ENTERPRISES (OPTICAL)

The two Enterprises continue to orbit the planet as we begin
the voice over.

                           PICARD (V.O.)
Captain's Log, Stardate 44636.1. We have
received orders from Star Fleet Command to
arrest the survivors of the battle at
Norendra III. It seems the Admiralty is
not convinced of the time travel theory
despite the presence of this alternate
          version of Tasha Yar.

INT. BRIDGE BRIEFING ROOM (OPTICAL)

PICARD, RIKER, WORF, DATA, GEORDIE, YAR and CASTILLE sit in the
main bridge briefing lounge. The planet can be seen out the
wide curving windows and perhaps the Enterprise-C as well.

                           PICARD (V.O.)
I have assembled my senior staff and the
senior staff of the Enterprise-C to plan
          our next steps.

                           YAR
I can't believe Star Fleet is doing this to
          us.

                           RIKER
I think the Admiralty hasn't been the same
          since the Borg incident.

                           CASTILLE
          The Borg?

Picard raises his hand to get their attention and call the
meeting to order. He is no happier than Riker and the others
about the turn of events.

                           PICARD
That's a long story and one that isn't
          relevant to the current proceedings.
                    (Picard pulls down his shirt)
          What I need are options.
                    (a beat)
          Anyone?

                           DATA
We have no options, Captain. Star Fleet
          Regulations Paragraph . . .

                           RIKER
                    (interupting)
Data, Captain Picard and the rest of the
people in this room are well aware of the
          regulations. Strictly speaking what these
people did could be construed as mutiny.

                           WORF
They are not mutineers, they are warriors.
Those who defend Klingons against the
attack of honorless Romulans are heros!

Yar is still uncomfortable with Worf, but she acknowledges his
comment with a nod.

                           DATA
Nonetheless, our next step must be to
          confine the survivors aboard the
          Enterprise.
                    (a beat)
However, since we are not within normal
cruising distance of a starbase, you do
have the authority to call for a formal
Inquiry Board on the Enterprise. Such a
Board may be used to clear the defendants
if it is found that no general court
          martial is warranted.

                           PICARD
That is an excellent idea, Mr. Data.
                    (to Riker)
          See to it, Number One.

                           RIKER
          Aye, Sir.

                           PICARD
                    (to Worf)
Meanwhile, Mr. Worf, assemble a security
team and beam down to the surface. See to
it that all the survivors are transported
          aboard the Enterprise.

Worf's eyes are aflame as he answers in a deep rumble.

                           WORF
          Yes, Captain.

                           PICARD
                    (to Yar and Castille)
          How many survivors are there?

                           CASTILLE
Thirty crew and ten children. The oldest
is our daughter, Rachel, shes 21 years old,
not a child anymore. The other children
range from sixteen down to five years old.

                           PICARD
I'm not about to throw children into the
Brig. Nor am I going to separate families.
Will confinement to a holodeck be
          satisfactory?

                           YAR
That would be more than generous, Captain.

                           PICARD
Let's proceed then, the sooner we get this
          nonsense over with the better.

The meeting breaks up and they all depart, Picard remains
seated staring out at the planet.

INT. TRANSPORTER ROOM (OPTICAL)

O'Brien is at the console, two security persons are posted at
either side of the doorway. Tasha and Castille are standing in
front of the console facing the platform.

                           O'BRIEN
          This is the last group.

He energizes the transporter and six figures take shape on the
platform, Worf, another security officer and the last four
survivors, including Rachel Castille. Rachel looks around the
chamber then spots her parents and runs to her father's arms.
The security officer leads the others out of the room. Worf
waits for the Castille family.

                           CASTILLE
          There you are, Bunny!

                           RACHEL
Oh, Poppa, you know how I hate that name!
                    (a beat)
          How are you?

                           CASTILLE
          I'm . . . we're fine! They've taken good
care of us. Captain Picard is on our side,
I think, but he has his orders.

                           YAR
          Rachel, dear, don't I get a hug?

Rachel ignores her.

                           RACHEL
So this is the new Enterprise . . . nice.

                           CASTILLE
Rachel, say hello to your mother.

Rachel goes to Tasha and gives her one of those off the cheek
fake kisses. Worf has had enough, he motions to them to leave.

                           WORF
Come, I will escort you to the holodeck.

They turn and leave the room.

INT. HOLODECK 3 - EARTH SCENE DAY (OPTICAL)

The holodeck is set to display a pleasant old Earth scene with
lots of trees and grass, we hear the holodeck door open. We
see several young children running and playing, in the distance
are some buildings. The kids love it. Tasha, Castille and
Rachel walk into the scene. Rachel is awed by the scene.

                           RACHEL
Oh my, what is all this, Poppa? Is it
          real?

                           CASTILLE
It's Earth, Rachel, or at least a
simulation of what Earth used to be like.

                           RACHEL
This is where you were born?

                           CASTILLE
Well, not exactly, but close enough. Earth
hasn't been this open and plush for many
years, but parts of it are still this nice.
At least it was the last time I was there.

                           RACHEL
This is wonderful. I'm going to check out
the living quarters and order myself
something to eat, maybe even chocolate!

Rachel runs away toward the buildings leaving Yar and Castille
alone. They stand admiring the scene for a moment.

                           YAR
She's up to something, Richard. She's been
laying it on pretty thick since she got
          here.

                           CASTILLE
Come on, Tasha, she's been couped up on our
little planet for a long time. Let her
          explore.
                    (a beat)
Besides, we have more important things to
worry about. We need to meet with the
others and start working on our defense.

Yar nods her agreement then they clasp hands and walk toward
the buildings in the distance.

INT. MAIN ENGINEERING

GEORDIE LA FORGE is working on some instruments in a shadowy
corner of Main Engineering. He is reading some panel, then
turns and comes face to face with WORF, who has walked up
behind him. Geordie is startled.

                           LA FORGE
Geez, Worf, you've about scared me to
          death!

Worf gives Geordie one of his patented Klingon looks but says
nothing.

                           LA FORGE
What can I do for you, old buddy?

Worf considers his words before speaking, then looks around to
see that no one else is around.

                           WORF
          I need a favor, Commander.

                           LA FORGE
Sure, Worf, anything for you. What is it?

                           WORF
I need a secure channel from my quarters on
          this frequency.

He hands Geordie a data pad. Geordie looks at it and is mildly
shocked.

                           LA FORGE
Worf, this is a Klingon frequency!

                           WORF
Yes. Will you grant my request?

                           LA FORGE
I don't know, Worf, the Captain might not
like this, not to mention what Commander
Riker might think. Just what are you up
          to?

                           WORF
I cannot say . . . yet. Will you grant my
          request, Commander?

                           LA FORGE
OK, Worf, for you, I'll do it. If you
think it's important enough. Lord knows
you got me out of a lot of tight spots.

                           WORF
Thank you, I am in your debt.

Worf walks away, Geordie is left alone shaking his head, he
returns to his instruments.

INT. WORF'S QUARTERS

It is dark in Worf's quarters. He approaches his terminal and
sits in a chair in front of it. He activates the panel and
SPEAKS into it in KLINGON. After a few minutes of dialog he
stops and turns off the terminal. The camera closes on his
serious face.

INT. HOLODECK - EARTH SCENE NIGHT (OPTICAL)

Castille and Yar plot sit under a tree plotting the Enterprise-
C crew's defense. She is cradled in his arms.

                           YAR
How could this happen, we were trying to
save the Federation's future and now it's
all backfired ? What do we do now, Captain
          ?

                           CASTILLE
I don't know, technically we are guilty of
mutiny. If I were in Star Fleet's shoes I
guess I would arrest us too.

                           YAR
I don't think the crew would appreciate
your logic. They weren't to happy with us
handling the defense, we have to come up
with something good enough to set us all
          free.

                           CASTILLE
I know. Now that the danger of
contaminating the future is over, a lot of
them would like to return to the
          Federation, particularly those with
          families.

                           YAR
          I know.
                    (a beat)
Damn, I know the regs about as well as
anyone and I can't think of a way out of
          this either.

                           CASTILLE
Well, there must be someone on this ship
who could help us. Who did you rely on
when you were on the alternate Enterprise?

                           YAR
No one. I always relied on my wits and
muscle to get by, that's what you had to do
to survive on my home planet.

                           CASTILLE
Come on, Tasha, there must have been
someone you at least talked to.

                           YAR
          Well there was . . .

Just then a shadowy figure comes into view. It steps out into
the starlight. It is Guinan.

                           YAR (CONT.)
          Guinan.

                           GUINAN
          Hello, Tasha, Castille.

Yar is shocked, but somehow knows that Guinan would show up at
a time like this.

                           YAR
Guinan, how did you get in here?

                           GUINAN
I know the Boss, we drink prune juice
together. Besides, you are the ones
confined, I can go where I please. I just
wanted to see how you were doing.

                           CASTILLE
We are trying to figure out a defense for
          these charges against us.

                           YAR
I was just telling Richard that you were
the only one I can remember confiding in.
                    (a beat)
It's only been twenty three years, but my
          memories seem kind of dim.

                           GUINAN
That's normal, some of your memories will
fade as this timeline diverges from the one
you left. But I can't believe I was the
only one you talked to. Judging by all the
fond memories people on this ship still
have of you, I have to believe you were
close to some of them in your timeline.

                           YAR
          I really don't recall.

                           GUINAN
Then perhaps it's time to shed that reality
and make use of your friends in this one.
Some of them are quite capable, and some
          really love you.
                    (a beat)
It's too bad you don't have a positronic
brain like Data, then you'd never forget
          your friends.

                           YAR
Data, of course! I just remembered
something . . . I always used to talk to
him. He was so non-threatening, so easy to
          talk to.
                    (turns to Castille)
He could access all the legal banks in the
Federation in a matter of minutes!

                           GUINAN
          Data. Now there's an idea!

Castille, Yar and Guinan all smile at once. Suddenly Tasha
stops smiling.

                           YAR
Oh, but, Guinan, I treated him rather badly
earlier. Do you think he would still want
          to help?

                           GUINAN
Data doesn't have a hateful bone in his
body . . . so to speak. I think he would
help a dog who just bit him on the
          backside, if it needed helping.

Tasha relaxes and smiles again, she knows Guinan is right.

                           YAR
Thanks, I'll try not to take that
          personally.

                           CASTILLE
Do you think you could arrange for us to
          meet with Data?

                           GUINAN
I think I could arrange for one of you to
          meet with him.

Tasha comprehends Guinan's message, this is something she must
handle with Data.

                           YAR
I think I should be the one, Guinan.

Guinan nods her head in the affirmative and smiles gently at
Tasha.

INT. TEN FORWARD (OPTICAL)

Data stands alone in the room, the lights are dim, he admires
the planet below through the wide windows. Suddenly the doors
open and Tasha enters. A security officer can be seen behind
her. The officer takes up a position outside the doors as she
enters the room. The doors close behind her.

                           YAR
Hello, Data. Thank you for agreeing to see
          me.

                           DATA
Do not thank me yet, Tasha.

                           YAR
No, I want to thank you. You didn't have
to go to all this trouble for me,
especially after how I treated you
          yesterday.

                           YAR (CONT.)
                    (a beat)
Well, I just wanted to apologize.

                           DATA
There is no need to apologize, Tasha, I
have no feelings to be hurt.

                           YAR
OK, Data. So, what have you learned?

                           DATA
I have been reviewing your case with the
Federation legal banks and have failed to
come up with any solution to your problem.
                    (a beat)
          I am sorry.

                           YAR
Nothing, Data? There must be some case,
some precedent somewhere. The rules aren't
that cut and dried, not even the Prime
          Directive is that inflexible.

Data is taken by surprise at the mention of the Prime
Directive.

                           DATA
Intriguing. That might be a possibility.
                    (a beat)
          Accessing.

                           YAR
What, Data, what might be a possibility?

                           DATA
          A moment please, Tasha.
                    (a beat while he continues
                    accessing)
There is a small probability, but it may in
          fact suffice.

Tasha is overwhelmed with joy and throws herself into Data's
arms.

                           YAR
Oh, Data, I knew you could do it!

The camera closes to a tight shot of their faces and then only
Data's. He is as pleased as any Android could be.
FADE OUT.
                        END OF SCENE 3
