National Public Radio Guilty of Anti-Christian Bigotry
Commentator calls Christian theology 'crap'
Says world would be 'better' without devout Christians
In an unbelievable display of anti-Christian bigotry, National Public
Radio commentator Andrei Codrescu described the return of Christ and
Christian theology (I Thessalonians 4:17), as "crap." According to a
December 19 transcript of National Public Radio's All Things
Considered, Codrescu said, "The evaporation of four million (people)
who believe in this crap would leave the world in an instantly better
place."
After Christian Coalition contacted NPR executive producer Ellen
Weiss, Weiss admitted that Codrescu's commentary "crossed the line."
When Christian Coalition pressed NPR to make a public apology, Weiss
initially declined, but contacted Christian Coalition late yesterday
evening and said an apology may be forthcoming on today's broadcast.
No punitive action is planned against Codrescu. NPR declined to allow
Christian Coalition Executive Director Ralph Reed two minutes of air
time on All Things Considered to offer an opposing view. "I am sorry
it went on the air in that form," said Weiss.
"National Public Radio has mocked and defamed the deeply held beliefs
of millions of Christians and it is my sincere hope that NPR
executives have the decency to go on the air and admit they were
wrong," said Mike Russell, Christian Coalition's communications
director. "NPR has just thumbed its nose at evangelical Christians at
a time when they are celebrating their most cherished holiday of the
year."
Christian Coalition calls on the executive producers of All Things
Considered to issue an immediate apology to the more than 30 million
evangelical Christians. Christian Coalition, a pro-family citizen
action organization with more than 1.7 million members and activists
nationwide, will intensify lobbying efforts to press Congress for
full privatization of National Public Radio in the wake of this
egregious example of bigotry and intolerance toward millions of
people of faith.
"It is incumbent upon NPR to issue a genuine apology. This is one
more example of religious bigotry subsidized with tax dollars," said
Ralph Reed. "We have long passed the time for full privatization of
National Public Radio. These attacks on people of faith must end."
