John Keely used compressed air, not "resonant harmonics" (i.e. Keely was a fraud...)

The following is taken from "The Secret Forces of the Pyramids" by Warren
Smith, 1975. In my opinion, Mr. Smith's account of John Keely is somewhat
"racy." For the opinion of one who was personally acquainted with Mr. Smith,
refer to Message 9112. The information below is from pages 151 through
154.

"Let us now move to the Fourth of July, 1871, when John Keely stood in a small
town in the middle western United States and watched exploding fireworks in
the skies. Keely that the last decades in the last century would be the
grandest eras in history. He reflected on the scientific advancements that
would be forthcoming in the waning years of the century. America was entering
the industrial edge. There was a tremendous need for energy."

" 'There has to be some manner in which the vast resources of nature can be
harnessed for the benefit of humanity,' Keely decided. After the festivities
of the holiday ended, he turned to the problems of finding and harnessing such
a force."

"Six months later, John Keely astonished the scientific and business worlds by
announcing the discovery of a new type of energy. 'I've discovered a way to
disintegrate the outer ether force that controls the essence of atomic
matter,' he announced. 'I have invented a new type of motor that operates
without fuel. The energy is supplied solely by harmonic vibrations.' "

"Scientists groaned with skepticism as reporters tried to verify Keely's
statements about his miraculous motor. One enterprising newsman interviewed a
prestigious professor at a Chicago university on Keely's breakthrough.
'There's always a lunatic fringe trying to come up with the ultimate energy,'
declared the expert. 'The ancient Chinese tried to come up with something
known as vital energy. The old Rindu manuscripts talk about the power of
Prana force. Even the natives in the Pacific got in on the act. They used to
tell early sea captains about something known as Mana energy.' "

"The professor explained that the early alchemists were also searching for
this elusive force. 'Dig through the dusty books in the libraries,' he told
the newsman. A note of cynical bitterness laced his voice. 'You'll find that
Paracelsus claimed to have discovered something known as Munis energy.

Mesmer, allegedly the father of hypnotism, talked about the energy in animal
magnetism. It's all poppycock! There are definite rules to nature. One of
the strongest is that you don't get something for nothing. Mother Nature
doesn't provide a free lunch!" '

"The reporter persisted. 'Then what's the source of power for Keely's motor?'

' "Hot air!' snapped the professor, 'and an overly active imagination!" '

"Despite critics and detractors, John Keely built a prototype of his motor and
displayed the invention to potential investors. Groups of astonished
financiers watched with amazement as the motor displayed enough power to bend
steel beams with seeming ease. The motor was started by a small button on the
side and, once put into action, moaned and groaned for several moments as
a power was generated. At high speed, the motor hummed like a giant
harmonica."

After his demonstrations, Keely obtained financial backing from twenty-three
financiers. As they wrote out their checks to finance refinement of the Keely
motor, the investors envisioned the billions to be made with such a 'fuelless'
motor. As he deposited the checks, John Keely reflected on the strange life
that had brought him into the inventor's circle. He was born in Philadelphia
in 1827, worked as a concert violinist, a carpenter, and a magician in a
traveling patent medicine show. When the western territories opened up for
settlement, he hurried to the Rocky Mountains to become a fur trapper. His
frontier life ended when he had an arrow shot into his back during a fracas
with Indians over trapping rights. As he slowly recovered from the wound,
Keely decided to leave the frontier and seek his fortune back in
Philadelphia."

"By December, 1883, Keely's investors were angrily demanding more information
on his mysterious motor."

" ' We've put up our money,' explained a spokesman for the financiers. 'We've
received nothing in return. We need drawings and plans to start manufacturing
the motor.' "

" ' We've got to be cautious,' Keely explained."

" ' This constant secrecy has to end,' the financier demanded. 'If you were
to die, my friends and I would lose our entire investment.' "

"Keely shrugged. 'I don't want to reveal the secret to everyone. People will
talk about something of this magnitude. If my secret got into the wrong
hands, we'd lose our monopoly. Appoint one scientist to come into my
workshop. I'll open up my plans to him. I'll also reveal the secrets of
harmonic power to him. If he's satisfied, he can provide you with a positive
report on my progress.' "

"Keely's investors appointed Edward Bakel, a respected scientist, to check the
motor. After several days with the inventor, Bakel reported back. 'I'm
convinced that John Keely has discovered the secret of nature's power,' he
said. 'Frankly, I can't understand his explanations completely. Yet
I'm unable to argue with his results.' "

"Again and again, during the next five years, John Keely was prodded by his
angry investors. The financiers traveled periodically to his laboratory in
Philadelphia and demanded action, not promises. On occasion, the outraged
investors screamed violently at the inventor."

" 'Give me more time and we'll be rich beyond our dreams,' Keely assured his
backers.' "

"Throughout those tumultuous years, John Keely exhibited a gentle nature
toward the men who screamed, yelled, and ultimately howled for profit on their
investment. Disgusted with the lack of progress, his original group of
investors stomped out of his laboratories. They were quickly replaced by
another group of stockholders."

"By 1888, the second group of alarmed stockholders were upset by Keely's
procrastination. They went into court and obtained an injunction against the
investor. Keely was ordered by the judge to reveal the source of his
mysterious power. He refused. Within hours, Keely was arrested and sent to
jail for contempt of court. He languished behind bars until a wealthy widow
heard of his problems. She came to his rescue, paid his fine, and provided
financing for the next decade of experimentation. Keely passed away in 1898
without revealing the secret of his motor."

"Keely was barely in his grave before a band of stockholders descended on his
laboratory. Swinging sledge hammers and wrecking bars, they tore the building
apart in an effort to discover his secret. The irate group finally discovered
a giant steel container in a basement below the motor shop."

" 'We've been swindled!' screamed an irate manufacturer. 'This is a tank for
compressed air. Keely ran lines up to the motor. He was running the thing
off compressed air.' "

"However, another group of stockholders claimed that Keely had shown them the
compressed air tanks several years before his death. 'The air was used to
cool the motor when it was running at top speed,' explained Edward Bakel.
'There wouldn't be enough air pressure top make the engine run.' "

"The disgruntled stockholders realized finally that the secret of Keely's
motor and the source of his 'harmonic' power died with the inventor. Even
today, a controversial mystery swirls around John Keely, his invention, and
alleged accomplishments. Some people claim that Keely made a tremendous
breakthrough in harmonic, or vibrating sound energy. Others swear he was just
another persuasive conman with a glib tongue out to bilk greedy investors."
