        _Screaming_in_Digital______________________________Editor's Note_

Greetings, all. In case there's someone out there in the
backwaters of the net who actually hears about things even slower
than I do - now that I've got a night job and am never awake at
times my EMI contact answers the telephone - numerous sources
are reporting that the new CD and companion CD-ROM will be out
        October 18th.
I will, of course, be trying to confirm this and learn
whatever else I can about the album, as soon as I manage to get
through to EMI. Offers of day jobs are welcome. :)

        Release Date Don <ai699@yfn.ysu.edu>
I talked to my representative yesterday and the date for
the new Queensryche is October 18, 1994. This is the most
definite and assured date that has been given to me from her
about this, so let's start the countdown.

        Release Date Michael <mikeb@cs.brandeis.edu>
I have seen from the new release mailing list, and I
forget where else, that the release date for "The Promised Land"
appears to have been moved up to October 18. I don't know how
true it is, but that's what I've seen.

        Release Date Skirdman <skirdman@aol.com>
The latest I've heard on AOL is October 18th. This date
was said to be from someone within EMI. I hope this one is the
        real date!

        Release Date Paul <raistlin@expert.cc.purdue.edu>
I went to Tracks, a local campus record store that
usually knows what's going on. On the new release board,
Queensryche was listed as "coming soon." I asked if they had a
date, and was happy to hear that it will be released October
        18th!

        Rage for Order Jonathan <st92kjd3@dunx1.ocs.drexel.edu>
I think "Rage for Order" definitely has a universal
appeal to it. The music is pretty complex and the lyrics are
more emotional than "Empire." Take a listen to 'Neue Regel' and
then think about how old a song it really is. It is easily as
progressive as anything else they have ever done. I would bet
that 95 percent of fans would put "Rage" as one of their top 3
Queensryche albums. It bridges the huge gap between "The
Warning" and "Mindcrime," pleasing both fans of the old and the
new styles. I myself would still take "Mindcrime" to a desert
island if I could only bring one album. But if I could bring
        two...

        Diverse Audience Brandon <blcampbe@sdcc13.ucsd.edu>
It struck me in the last digest what a diverse audience
Queensryche appeals to. My friends who listen to them have some
strange tastes as well. Personally, I like music with a harder
edge than say, Rush, so I find bands like Iron Maiden more
compatible for me. One band I think is quite compatible is
Flotsam and Jetsam, although their similarity in the vocals
borders on making them Geoff Tate copycats. I also like Alice in
Chains, AC/DC, and Accept. Not much like Foreigner and Journey,
        are they?

        CD-ROM Ben <ben_ball@qmailgw.esy.com>
ISO-9660 is an industry standard for recording data.
There is a difference between how data is recorded on the media
and the format of that data. Amiga, Next, Macintosh and Windows
machines can _all_ handle just about anything put on a disk.
There are players for all these platforms for any kind of sound
or animation file format I can think of. Yes, there is QuickTime
for Windows - and it's even from Apple! Yes, there are WAV, MOD,
AVI, MPEG, VOC, AIFF, uLaw and 8SVX players for Macintosh. That
said, I'd be very much surprised if the new companion CD-ROM was
        anything but cross-platform.

        Mindcrime Musing Brian <bps106@psuvm.psu.edu>
After many a long night with Mindcrime blaring from my
stereo while working on my script I've come up with a few ideas
which I think solves one of the most reccuring and nagging
questions about the album, "How could Mary have hung herself or
have been strangled with a rosary?"
I'm assuming that this stems form the line "your rosary
wrapped around your throat". I think the literal interpretation
of the line is misleading. Rather I think it is more an analogy
for Nikki's view that religion has a strangle-hold on Mary. This
also jives with the line from 'Suite Sister Mary,' "your precious
cross is gone, it made me wait so long for what you gave to every
one," which suggests that Nikki didn't express his feelings for
Mary because he really believed that she was a Nun, as well as
injury upon finding out her past and "relationship" with Father
        William.

        How Everyone Died Ben <ben_ball@qmailgw.esy.com>
Nikki shot the priest. I think Mary hung herself, but
not with her rosary. Nuns do wear them. The reference to it
being wrapped around her throat is just a striking visual; a
brutal contrast between a rosary and a rope. These images of how
Father William and Mary died, combined with a heavy chemical
dependence, are why Nikki has finally lost it and is hospitalized
and being sedated. It's a brilliant album and would make a
        moving play.

I'd have to agree with Rush, and also mention Pink Floyd
and Marillion. Neither is as heavy as Queensryche, but all seem
to be into the concept/theme album thing. "Mindcrime," Floyd's
"The Wall" and "Animals" and Marillion's "Misplaced Childhood"
are my favorite concept albums. Empire was more of a theme album
than a concept album, as were Marillion's "Clutching at Straws"
and Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon."
                All three groups also have excellent musicians;
guitarists and vocalists especially. Geoff Tate and Fish
(formerly of Marillion) are two of my favorite singers.

        Compatible Groups Markus <mb@marie.physik.tu-berlin.de>
In my eyes, Queensryche is compatible with Dream Theater,
Fates Warning, Secrecy, and Black Sabbath's "Born Again" album.

        Compatible Bands <rycherox@aol.com>
Dream Theater immediately comes to mind. They have the
same qualities (superb musicianship, complex and intelligent
lyrics and unbelievable vocals) that have set Queensryche apart
from the rest of the pack. If you listen to Dream Theater's last
album, "Images and Words," you should be able to pick out dozens
of influences, such as Yes, Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd, Queensryche
(but of course), Metallica, etc. They have a new release set for
late September or early October if memory serves, and with the
new release from Queensryche due in October, the possibility
exists of the tour to end all tours, Dream Theater/Queensryche.
I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope it happens.

I'm looking for a bootleg of the complete Madison, WI
show, either video or audio. I was at that show and figure
someone must have a copy of it. If anyone can help me, e-mail
me. I'd really ($) appreciate it.

I have a few Japanese imports (which Shag describes as
"harder to find than European ones") for sale - "Operation:
Mindcrime," "Rage for Order," and the 'Best I Can' single. I
looked up the prices in "CD Europe" and they want a total of
$119.85, not even including shipping and handling. I'll sell
all those for $49.00. E-mail me if interested.
I also have the 'Sound of Building Empires' promo and
the 'Jet City Woman' and 'Another Rainy Night' singles. I'll
sell those three for $35 plus postage.
