Greetings, and happy Ides of March, everyone. My tidbit
for the week comes from EMI. In answer to a question from France
a week or so back, yes, the new album _is_ slated for large-scale
global release. After the success of "Empire," EMI figures this
one won't exactly flop. I'll have more news this spring.

        New Album? Rob <empire@maple.circa.ufl.edu>
I recently re-subscribed to Screaming in Digital after a
ten month hiatus. I was wondering, what is the status of
Queensryche's new album? Have they selected a title yet, or
begun recording? Is there a release date?
My theory for their long break after "Empire" is that
their producer - Peter Collins - was busy working with Rush.

        New Album Daniel <danielwe@microsoft.com>
My friend who works in the "Bad Animals" studio here in
downtown Seattle says he's not sure whether Queensryche are
recording their new album there or just mixing it. One thing is
for sure, they _will_ be there for something. In fact, he talked
to their manager briefly - "Jimbo" something I think, this really
big guy he said. So, I asked my friend to do everything he can
to get me in there when they're there. I should be able to do
this. And I think the first thing I do if and when I see them
will be to ask Geoff what the heck he says in 'The Killing
        Words,' anyway.

        New Album Mike <mikeb@cs.brandeis.edu>
I don't remember if someone posted this before, but I
just was looking at the new release list - from rec.music.info,
or on the new release mailing list - and it has Queensryche
scheduled for a June release. Date and title are unknown so far.
I'll post whatever I see there as there is more info.

        Fan Club Jai <jaipiper@aol.com>
I moved a few months back and wrote the club with the
info and a few questions. One questions was: does the $15.00 fee
make you a member for life or do you _have_ to renew - it is for
life. But the most surprising thing is that "Sustain" and not
"Sushi" wrote me back. Maybe the rumors about a big change in
        the fan club are true.
{Oh, Sushi's still in charge. It's just that
with over 8,000 members, it's too big for one
                        person to run alone, and Sushi's busy.  -sh}

        Nikki and Mary? Aaron <aks1@ra.msstate.edu>
I just got a copy of "Operation: Mindcrime," and I have a
question. Did Nikki know Mary before they both started working
for Dr. X? If so, how did they meet?
                        {I think they were introduced by Dr. X.  -sh}

        Songs Never Performed? Marcus <m.n.hand@newcastle.ac.uk>
I've just been compiling my set for the ultimate setlist
thing and was wondering which songs, if any, have never been
played live. In particular I was thinking about "Rage" as I
would imagine some of this would be very difficult to pull off
        live.

        Donnington 1990 Willy <wal@glasgow-caledonian.ac.uk>
Seeing as I'm fairly new to this newsletter I thought I'd
just append to introduce myself and share my most memorable
        Queensryche experience.
Way way back in 1990 I was one of the brave (plastic
bottle resilient) people to see Queensryche at the Monsters of
Rock tour at Donnington, England. I had only been introduced to
the band a couple of months earlier but was by then a complete
fanatic. We'd traveled down from Scotland the day before in the
smallest, most unroadworthy car you have ever seen and claimed
our piece of mud in the car park field behind the concert area.
Anyway, just as we arrived we discovered that over the fence out
of sight they were getting things organized for the next day.
Listening in, I and all the other idiots who were mad
enough to arrive a day early were treated to snippets and some
entire songs from the bands - Black Crowes, Queensryche, Motley
Crue, Metallica and AC/DC. I honestly cannot remember if
Queensryche actually played any numbers or snippets - too many
liquid refreshments I'm afraid - but I do remember they played
many of the intro bits which are between the songs on "Operation:
Mindcrime." In particular I recall the "Revolution... I remember
now..." bit from the end of "Operation: Mindcrime."
It really freaked me out and is probably the most
memorable moment from all the gigs I've ever been to. It was just
so strange to have this big booming voice coming out of nowhere
in the middle of nowhere. Like something out of George Orwells
'1984', it's hard to describe but it was very creepy to say the
        least.
Now I wonder - after I've bored you all - if anyone can
help me out. At the concert as each band came on and went off,
two dolly bird types jumped up onto two guys' shoulders and held
up a great big MTV banner. These were the only times they did
this so I wondered if MTV was covering the gig. As I didn't have
satellite TV and none of my friends did I never found out. Does
anybody know anything of this? If so I'd be interested in
obtaining a copy of the Queensryche set if anyone has any
        details.

        Eyes Chords Jim <jimd@sscl.uwo.ca>
Hello to all the 'Rychers out there! For those who like
to play Queensryche songs on the guitar, maybe you can help me
out. I am trying to figure out the chord formation for the
beginning of 'Eyes of a Stranger.' The chord is being played
with a clean chorused sound as Geoff starts to sing, "All alone
now, except for the memories." I can't figure it out and it's
driving me nuts! Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

        Who Killed Mary? Elizabeth <bizbif@delphi.com>
Well, since I haven't taken part in any of the
discussions about this, I think I'd have to say that although the
concert and "Operation: Livecrime" booklets say that mary killed
herself, I still think Dr. X killed her. Either that or the
fundamentalists I saw in the square today heard news of her
horribly blasphemous acts and decided to remove her uncleanness
from the earth. Sorry - just a few too many bullhorns going at
once for me to be patient.

        Who Killed Mary? Michael <michael.j.mcclure@dartmouth.edu>
I always assumed it was suicide. I don't think it was
Dr. X, since Nikki had just confronted him right beforehand. It
wouldn't have given him time to come back and kill her. Mary
meanwhile starts thinking after Nikki has killed Father William
that Nikki is no different than all other men that have degraded
her before. The Livecrime booklet says, "She hated him. She
hated men. She hated life." Sounds like a suicidal attitude to
        me.

        Who Killed Mary? Sean <axspk@acad2.alaska.edu>
Your right on this being an old subject, but as to who
killed Mary, it has come both officially from the Fan Club, as
well as appearing in the very final video of "Video: Mindcrime" -
after the credits. Mary _did_ commit suicide. If you watch the
video that appears after the credit roll on "Video: Mindcrime"
_very_ carefully with your finger on the pause button there is a
sequence lasting about 15 frames or so that prints the word
"suicide" across the screen. The last I had heard this was the
answer from everyone involved, including the band members, but
they like fans to figure it out for themselves. Shows how
        dedicated they are.

        Who Killed Mary? Dawn <psycho@wpi.edu>
Did anyone here ever let the "Video: Mindcrime" tape run
all the way through? And did you see that "hidden" video at the
end? You know, the one that has no footage of the band in it and
puts you in a trance for a week because the screen flashes so
many times. Well, I wanted to find out exactly what was being
thrown at me that mangled my mind. So, I played the thing in
slow motion and "suicide" flashed up and the next frame showed
Mary sprawled on the floor, dead. Makes you wonder if the band
threw that in there to answer this question or just to add fuel
        to the fire.

        Who Killed Mary? <skirdman@aol.com>
I thought that it was a suicide. On "Video: Mindcrime,"
_after_ the credits there is another video for "I Don't Believe
in Love." The video splits the screen in two and is flashing
images of the whole story. Towards the end of the song, the
word "suicide" is flashed across the whole screen and then it
cuts to two pictures of Mary lying dead on the floor.

        Higher Education Jai <jaipiper@aol.com>
A while back someone asked about the higher education of
the guys. While Geoff did attend college for a year, Michael
also attended a music college, Berklee. How long and where this
        is remain a mystery.
                        {I think Berklee's main site is in Boston.  -sh}

        Bugsy's Pizza Daniel <danielwe@microsoft.com>
I live in the Seattle area and a few friends and I went
out one night this last weekend. We went into downtown Seattle
to go to a comedy club that none of us had ever been to before.
We realized that it was near Pike Place market - which is one of
_the_ tourist attractions up here. The funny thing is I
remembered someone telling me that that's around where they
filmed the "Building Empires" video. And sure enough, as we
were walking down a set of stairs at the 1st level of the market,
I noticed a big sign for "Bugsy's Pizza." That's the name of the
pizza place that Chris mentions in the final shot of the video.
The funny thing is, this comedy club we went to is right across
the road from Bugsy's. Looking around the street while waiting
to get into the show, I was sure this was the location.
Unfortunately I don't have a VCR right now so I can't verify this
by watching the video but I remember enough to be pretty sure.
In fact at the end when they say something to the effect of "We'd
better stop walking or we're going to end up in Elliot Bay" makes
sense since the Bay is about a 1/2 mile down the street. For
whomever is really interested, the location is Post Alley between
Union and Pike streets, right below Pike market. I thought that
was pretty cool but this is a relatively busy street so they must
have closed it off for the filming. Other Seattle people may
want to contribute more to this.
