New Album Nancy <nancy.host@uc.edu>
Did anyone else see this on the new-releases list?
Date Artist/Group Title
------ ---------------------- ----------------------------
Jun * Queensryche <title unavailable> [PW]
NOTES & DISCLAIMERS: [PW] from Phil Wilson
Basically, the * means that the album is on this list for
the first time. I have heard people say April and August, and I
thought it was interesting that this person said June. Are they
not taking up the title "Sequences" also? I wrote to the list
maintainer about a month ago about the album being out in August
and the suggested title, but he said to write back, it was too
early to put on the list.

Fan Club Stephanie <sewatson@eos.ncsu.edu>
If you are not sure about your membership status or have
any questions at all, don't hesitate to write Sushi about it.
When I waited six months before I got my first newsletter, I
wrote in about it and received a hand-written letter about the
whole deal in response! I felt very much a part of it, as should
all the members. I need to update my membership myself!
Livecrime Ad Gaffe Alex <amiller4@ux4.cso.uiuc.edu>
Reading all this stuff about "Mindcrime" - also my
favorite album - reminded me of an ad I saw before "Livecrime"
came out. It was a fairly simple ad in a magazine and it said
something like "Operation: Livercrime coming soon!". A friend
and I read that; we couldn't stop laughing. The picture of Nikki
flogging the priest to death with a piece of liver was too much.
Anyone else remember this typo? It was probably in one of the
guitar mags I would guess.
Pamela Moore Genevieve <gwilliam@sophia.smith.edu>
This is a question on behalf of a friend of mine. Has
Pamela Moore (aka Mary) done any recording other than "Operation:
Mindcrime?" My friend really likes her singing and is interested
in obtaining some of her work if possible.
Cliff Bernstein Cameron <camshaft@werple.apana.org.au>
The recent article about the artist Tim Bradstreet
mentioned that he had made contact with the Band's Manager, Cliff
Bernstein. Is this the same Cliff Bernstein of Leber-Krebs and
Q-Prime fame?
{Should be - Q-Prime manages Queensryche. -sh}
New Album? Marko <marko.lemieux@der.edf.fr>
I would like to know if a new album is coming out -
probably - and especially _when_? Also, when will it be
released in France?
{It's expected out this summer, I'll see if I
can find out about international plans. -sh}
_The_Whisper__________________________________________Discussion_
Lisa Dal Bello Jonathan <jmelman@garnet.acns.fsu.edu>
Terry wrote that "Black on Black" was a new song written
by DalBello for Heart. Actually, she performs the song on the
"Nine and a Half Weeks" sound-track. Pretty good song, IMHO.
Mindcrime Opinions Eric <taylorej@ac.wfunet.wfu.edu>
"Operation: Mindcrime" was _the_ album that converted me
to the ranks of the 'Ryche. There is no doubt that this is one
of my all-time absolute favorite albums. The story behind this
concept album is what fascinated me right from the start, and the
songs therein served to enhance this effect upon me. I think
that what defines a 'great album' is that every song on the album
is liked - and I don't mean tolerable, but really and actively
liked. This is excluding 'best of' albums and such. Speaking
for myself, it is rare to listen to such a album in which one
really likes every song, because, as I'm sure you all know, there
is usually at least that one bad or barely tolerable cut on every
album. But I realized - to my joy - that this was not so with
"Operation: Mindcrime." The only other album that I can honestly
place in this category would be Guns n' Roses' "Appetite for
Destruction," but "Operation: Mindcrime" probably gets a higher
rating because of its artistic merit!
Who Killed Mary? Tanya <thoughto@ucs.indiana.edu>
I take full responsibility for drudging up this age-old
question, but I have been reading SiD for a few months now, and I
can't seem to get into any of the discussions, so I thought that
I would stir up a little trouble and ask you guys who you think
killed Mary. Aside from the fact that even Geoff probably
doesn't know, I think that she was going to kill herself, but Dr.
X got to her first. I think this because in "Video: Mindcrime,"
I think it's in 'Eyes of a Stranger' - bear with me, I only saw
it once - Mary is holding a knife and she turns around suddenly.
In the booklet in "Operation: Livecrime" there's
something to the effect that Mary hates men and hates life and
wants to die. Again, I do not own this and haven't seen it very
often, sorry for any vagueness. In another scene in the video
Dr. X is shown twisting rosary beads around his hands as if in
preparation to strangle someone. The final thing that got me
was in the song itself Geoff says "your rosary wrapped around
your throat." That's my 2 cents. Hope I don't bore those of
you who have answered this question a million times. Look
forward to reading the responses!

Chemical Youth Nick <st87kdr8@dunx1.ocs.drexel.edu>
I can't figure out what Geoff says at the end of the
song. I was wondering if someone can listen and pick up the
words. I can understand the part where Geoff says: "I used to
wonder if there is something I could do with my life to make a
difference". Then he starts whispering something.

Meeting the Band Don <olive@orph23.phy.ornl.gov>
I thought I'd describe my experiences when I went to the
"Empire" show here in Knoxville, TN back a few years ago and how
I got back stage and partied with the band.
I heard that Queensryche was coming to Knoxville and I
was psyched! The only problem was that I had nobody to go with.
You see, my wife is not much into metal and most - actually all -
of my other thirtysomething friends aren't either. I have a
friend Bob - a graduate student in physics - at work and decided
that I'd have to turn him onto Queensryche and then talk him into
going. Since we car pool everyday I just chose "Empire" as the
music du jour _every_ day. He's really into current events and
we often debate or argue different topics for the fun of it. I
began telling him how 'topical' Queensryche's music is and
finally talked him into going to the concert with me. All of
this is just background material.
So on to the show. We got pretty trashed several hours
before but had sobered up by the time Queensryche hit the stage.
Knoxville is a cool place to see shows because they always sell
general admission and have a large standing room only area in
front of the stage. I prefer this much more than getting
reserved seats. I've seen quite a few shows in my time and must
admit, the Queensryche show was one of the very best. I would
compare it on my 'good-time' scale with the 1985 Rush "Power
Windows" show in Johnson City TN, and the 1979 ELO show in
Knoxville - not because of the music but because it was truly a
spectacle, lots of pyro and lasers. In terms of sheer energy it
was as powerful as the Metallica show in Nashville TN back in
1991. BTW, has Metallica broken up or not? Anyway, all of this
is just to say that this was one of the best shows I've ever
seen. The band was into it smiling and kidding around with each
other, teasing and interacting with the crowd, and generally
being very enthusiastic. Everyone was having a good time.
During the show we worked our way down towards the front
and ended up just a few rows back from the stage. Man, was it
packed. We were right there really loving it. We moshed,
yelled, sang, and were totally into it. Bob just couldn't
believe how good these guys were. The sound was so tight, not
distorted and not too loud. I like _loud_ concerts but there is
a limit at which it is just too loud. Queensryche's soundmen
are really good.
I was so hot and tired by the time it was over I just
sat down where I was and waited for the crowd to clear. We both
sat there speechless for a long time, then we saw a small crowd
of about 10 people or so gathering up beside the stage
underneath a big sign from the local rock radio station. I
said to Bob that we ought to try to merge with this group and
get backstage with them. It had been a big radio contest I had
heard about. So we moseyed on over and then some guy came out
and called some names. The people he called out went over and
he gave them a t-shirt and said good night. What a cheesy
'back stage contest' that turned out to be. I'm not sure but I
think these people must have been pissed.
So this group dispersed, we with them. On the way out
I turned to Bob and said, 'Hey, let's just go back there and act
like we belong.' That's exactly what we did. We just headed
for the back-stage area like we knew where we were going and
were in a hurry to get there. I told Bob to just look
important; he tried. We walked toward the guy guarding the door
like we were on important business, quickly and without
hesitation I just went for the door and walked in giving this
goon a nod as I went by. Bob followed.
I have never seen such a spread, cakes, beer, girls,
drinks, food, girls, a huge roasted turkey, and more girls.
There were all of the roadies and equipment men, promoters,
radio DJ's and then more girls. It was really cool. I leaned
over to Bob and said 'act nonchalant' - he tried. We hung out
there chatting and mingling with whoever was near. We met
several of the girls and came to find out that many of them
traveled from town to town chasing the band, trying to get
picked up. I'm sure that many of them did. We drank some beer
and just waited with everyone else for the band to finally come
out of the dressing room. After they had showered and changed
clothes they did come out and joined the party. It was great.
I got to talk to all 5 of them at one point or another. I even
handed Geoff Tate a beer - way cool, I thought. They were
dressed in jeans and t-shirts with hair pulled back. They
looked and acted very down to earth and personable. We all
talked and drank for about an hour or so, then people started
disappearing.
We finally split with a couple of the girls that didn't
get picked and ended up partying all night. We dropped these
girls off at a hotel - remember, I'm a married man - after
breakfast and headed home. All in all it was quite a night to
remember. I hope that the two Rush shows I have tickets for in
March and the Pink Floyd show in May are as much fun. I'm sure
they will be.

Rock & The Environment Mikel <mikelbiko@aol.com>
I was at the concert in George, Washington. I do not
remember if they had the video screens or not - and I wasn't even
high! If anyone has a boot of that show, I will trade from my 40
page list for it. I don't have much Queensryche, mostly
Marillion, Gabriel, Genesis, Floyd etc. Send me a letter (not an
E-mail) and the first respondent will get the trade.

I'd just like to take time out and express my viewpoint
on other concept CD's that rank up there with "Mindcrime," two of
which are by Marillion I think that other than Mindcrime, one
should get both "Misplaced Childhood" and "Clutching at Straws."
Marillion really does know how to put together an entire album
with a story. Also you might want to check out "Brave" from
them, its on the verge of becoming a classic much like the
aforementioned three.
