_Screaming_in_Digital______________________________Editor's Note_
Greetings once again, and welcome to all those who are
joining up at the start of the new semester. With luck, we could
be over 1200 strong by the end of the month.
So far only about 15 people have responded regarding the
idea of getting t-shirts made up, so I probably won't be getting
it done until Fall. For those who've asked, yes, the design will
be different - I've got much more powerful graphics software now
than I did before!
This is a pretty varied issue, and my fingers are tired
from all the editing. Which reminds me - I don't want to seem
anal, but this digest is specifically about Queensryche, and of
late I've had to return off-topic mail after asking that threads
be taken elsewhere. Please keep in mind that that everything you
send in is dealt with by me personally, and try to at least make
things relevant to Queensryche. Other things cause unnecessary
work. Thanks!

Frustration Mistake Alper <a11132@vm.cc.metu.edu.tr>
I read the digest and realized that there was a mistake
about the demo of my group, Frustration, in Turkey. I told you
the cost of making the demo, and you wrote it as the price of
the demo. The price of the demo is 5 dollars, plus postage.
{For those who are new, Frustration is a Turkish
band that is influenced by Queensryche, and does
a cover of one Queensryche song, in addition to
their original repertoire. -sh}
Bells Squrille <c561423@mizzou1.missouri.edu>
In the intro and outro of 'En Force' there are "hammer
bells" - I have no idea of what the proper term is. Does anyone
know if Scott does those or if they are a Michael Kamen's people
piece?
Songs Never Performed? Kevin <ryche@delphi.com>
Is there any song that Queensryche has never played live
in concert? There may be more than one, or even none at all.
{That's easy! 'Real World.' -sh}
Seattle Scene Mike <mgorman@eve.assumption.edu>
Since the "Seattle scene" is so big right now, I was
wondering if anyone knows how the band gets along with the other
members of the scene. I know that they do not get along with
Nirvana, but did have a relationship with the late Andrew Wood
and other members of the defunct Mother Love Bone.

British Livecrime Marcus <m.n.hand@newcastle.ac.uk>
The score as far as I remember from press releases in the
UK from a couple of years ago was that the "Livecrime" box set
was to be a limited edition only around for a few months. At the
time it was said the box would only be available for a limited
period after which the video alone would be released. This at
the time seemed to make sense as certainly in the UK vinyl was
still pretty common & many fans wanting to buy "Livecrime" might
not have had a CD player.
However, it never happened. The supposedly limited box
set is still available and the video wasn't released separately
until about 3 months ago - strangely just at the point where
everyone seems to have a CD player finally.
I guess the box sets just didn't sell as well as hoped
and therefore the separate video release was shelved. Why
they've released it now is anyones guess, although the lack of
new product might have something to do with it I suppose.
Last Time Lyrics Jason <lhartm1@gl.umbc.edu>
My band was thinking of covering 'Last Time in Paris,'
but there is one little problem. We are not completely sure of
the words. Could some kind soul please type them up and mail
them to me or just post them here? Thanks a lot!
Three of the four of us are big Queensryche fans. The
other guy, on bass is mainly into alternative stuff, whatever
that means. We are also _really_ into Dream Theater! The other
day my guitar player said that he wants to get a keyboard player
and just be a Dream Theater cover band! That would be really
cool! Kind of hard 'cause they only have about two albums worth
of stuff to cover!
By the way - I'm the drummer in the band. We used to do
some stuff from "Mindcrime" like 'Eyes of a Stranger' and the
other song that sounds like it! :) Lots of Mindcrime songs sound
the same... sorry.
{I think I already sent Jason the lyrics. If
anyone else wants them, check the FTP site at
glia.biostr.washington.edu, they're in directory
/pub/queensryche/files/lyrics/empire. Where'd
I get them? The fan club, of course. -sh}
_The_Whisper__________________________________________Discussion_
Old Versus New Joe <gxl108@psuvm.psu.edu>
I'm in my mid-twenties, and remember the days when
Queensryche's first EP came out. I believe 'Queen of the Reich'
was the first song of theirs I'd ever heard, and I became a
devoted listener. I loved their EP and "The Warning," and I
still think that this is the best music that the 'Ryche ever
created. Though I understand that the group has matured and
moved away from that early sound, I find it a little
disappointing that Queensryche seems to ignore their old stuff.
As a reader of SiD, I've noticed that most of the
discussion goes on about "Rage," "Mindcrime" and "Empire." When
I saw Queensryche on the "Mindcrime" and "Empire" tours, they
only played one song from their pre-Rage days. In fact, as
Geoff introduced the song 'Roads to Madness' that they played on
the Empire tour, he seemed almost apologetic that he was
subjecting the audience to something so old and so bad, I guess.
Is it just me, or is Queensryche really embarrassed
about those first two albums? I mean, I know that the video for
'Queen of the Reich' is about as sophomoric as it gets, but there
is no other Queensryche song that gets your blood pumping as fast
when you're driving. And 'Take Hold of the Flame' is one of the
best songs of all time, IMHO. Are we not going to hear these
anymore when we go to Queensryche concerts? Or is Geoff simply
not capable of delivering the notes the way that he could when
those albums were released?
{Now that the goal of performing "Mindcrime" live
has been fulfilled, the concerts might begin to
feature more of a variety. The structure of the
"Building Empires" set only left room for one or
two pre-"Mindcrime" songs per show. -sh}
_The_Killing_Words________________________________Interpretation_
Roads to Madness Kevin <ryche@delphi.com>
Hey, I have something for all of you. Listen closely to
Roads to Madness. During the reprise, someone is muffling
something in the background. Anyone know what it is? Subliminal
message maybe?
Silent Lucidity Craig <craig@terra.colorado.edu>
On the note of 'The Killing Words,' I can't help out with
the lyrics, but since we're all on the subject of lyric
cryptology, I'd like to know if anyone can enlighten me on the
passage in 'Silent Lucidity' that ends with "You will achieve
dream control, dream control." It's a low voice-over during a
bridge in the song. Any help would be appreciated.
{From the FAQ - Voice 1: "Visualize your dream.
Record it in the present tense. Put it into a
permanent form. If you persist in your efforts,
you can achieve dream control... dream control...
dream control." Voice 2: "How's that, then,
better?" Voice 3: "Help me." -sh}
Screaming in Digital Aaron <acyoung@mailbox.syr.edu>
On "Rage for Order," the song 'Screaming in Digital'
seems to be a song about a digital entity that seems to be
trapped by its creator. Has this ever been discussed before?
I'm interested to see what others have to say about what they
think the song is about.
{I forget where I heard it, but my favorite idea
is that it's about an artificial-intelligence
construct that has become aware of its own
existence and doesn't want to be shut off. -sh}
The Killing Words Chris <cave@erc.msstate.edu>
I have a suggestion on how to resolve this 'Killing
Words' problem. Did anyone happen to videotape "MTV Unplugged"
when Queensryche was starring? I think this was last year
sometime. Anyway, they sang 'The Killing Words' during the show.
I think that since that was a live and "acoustic" setting, one
might discern the lyrics more easily than from a CD, especially
if the camera was focused on Geoff during that part. It most
likely _was_ since that is a lyrically intense segment of the
song. I taped the show myself, but my girlfriend recorded ice
hockey over it - mourn, mourn - so I cannot scrutinize it for the
lyrics. I do think wireless phones were around in '85-'86, and
for now I agree with these lyrics:
Now the wireless in my hand is ringing
The distance of our lives keeps spreading
The pounding, I hear my heart, I'm not listening
Your voice from far away is screaming
I also don't think "Rage" is a concept album at all. I always
thought the song 'London' was about Jack the Ripper - "Blood-red
streaks on velvet throats ... London - not revolutionary
violence.
The Killing Words Paul <paul.ready@sdrc.com>
I listened to my much-abused disc repeatedly in order to
make sense of 'The Killing Words.' I came up with this for the
last three lines:
The distance of our lives keeps spreading
The pounding; I hear my heart - I'm not listening
Your voice from far away is screaming... It's over, over
However, for the first line, I came up with "Now the promise in
my hand is breaking" - not that it makes much sense, but I was
rather sure of the word breaking. Then again, for a while I had
a strong case for "walrus in the band," which might go a long way
toward explaining why no one could understand the lyrics.
Speaking of garbled voices, on "Mindcrime," during 'Eyes
of a Stranger' Geoff says something before the solo that seems to
be "this is what lies behind my stare." I'm not sure if the
"this is" part is something in my head that I put there to make
it a sentence. However, is he saying the same thing on the
"Livecrime" boxed set? I've never been able to hear that
clearly. Also, does anyone have a definite on the statistics
quoted in during 'Empire?'
{We had quite a time talking about 'Empire'
back around volumes 26 and 27. There was a lot
of math involved, revolving around whether Geoff
says "six percent" or "a sixth percent." You may
want to check the FTP site for those. -sh}
The Killing Words Sonny <quintans@ccmail.us.dell.com>
I'm really impressed with the response to my question
about the hard-to-hear lyrics in 'The Killing Words' that I
posted a couple weeks ago. I'm very glad that a forum like this
exists. Big thanks to everyone who has listened to that 15
seconds of the song about as many times as I have, and for
posting your results. I'm glad there wasn't a subliminal message
buried in that part of the song, or a few of us would be clucking
like chickens or barking like dogs or something like that.
{Woof. Woof, woof woof? Woof woof, woof! -sh}
Interpretation Dan <vilkata@iastate.edu>
One of the things I love about Queensryche. A little
story for you: I was salutatorian of my class (not too difficult
with only 50 people in our class), which at our school meant I
was one of the three people to give a speech at graduation, which
I really didn't want to do. So I made up a quick three-minute
speech. It sounded like a normal speech, but what the audience
didn't realize was every single line was, in one way or another,
some sort of joke, usually well-hidden sarcasm. Well, I decided
as a joke I'd put in a line from a song, so I chose, "There's
more to life than what we have known," from 'Anybody Listening?'
I later talked to a friend of mine who is also a Queensryche fan,
and he said that he thought that sounded familiar.

Bootleg Video John <jfp@tardis.svsu.edu>
I've got a copy of the Auburn Hills show on 11/8/91
(great show, I was there also). It's professionally shot with
some great close-ups. The band played for over two hours that
night and that is the reason why the last song and a half are
missing (my copy of the tape was recorded in the two hour mode).
If anyone is interested in a trade, let me know.
Empire Posters Kevin <v120p993@ubvms.cc.buffalo.edu>
For anyone who is interested, I have two "Empire" era
posters for sale. They are both in good condition.
1. Band members sitting in front of waterfall. Available
in record stores, probably not too rare.
2. Promo "Empire" poster. Fish-eye view of all 5 members
standing in front of Seattle buildings. Not widely available.
I'll accept offers for the posters, rather than set a
price to them. I'd rather sell them together, as a "set." I'll
sell them a bit cheaper, that way.

The Company Darren <darren.wilkes@bj.co.uk>
Unfortunately, this has got nothing to do with
Queensryche, but "The Company" is the Fish fan club, and has
nothing to do with Marillion.
Related Bands Michael <csc3mad@cabell.vcu.edu>
It is sad thing that Ray Gillen has died, but since
people brought up Savatage as a good likeness to Queensryche I
feel must relay this bit of info as well. Savatage's guitarist
and founder Chris Oliva died about 2 months ago in a car
accident. Since his brother John quit the band since the last
album, it is unlikely that Savatage will be releasing any more
albums, since Chris and John were the major motivation behind
the band. Oh well. Another great band bites the dust.
Related Bands Matt <matte@zatoichi.gvg.tek.com>
I'm not really sure I hear the Savatage-Queensryche
connection, however I would urge anyone who likes "Edge of
Thorns" to check out their earlier stuff. "Power Of The Night"
is _awesome_. Also worth a listen are "Hall Of The Mountain
King" - yes, they do a metal take on the Edvard Grieg music -
and "Sirens" - their debut I believe. Their singer on those
albums - John Oliva if memory serves - had the _ultimate_ gothic
power metal pipes.
Also, while I have your attention - sorry Shag, _another_
off-topic topic - if anyone on the list has even a fleeting
interest in classical music Glenn Danzig's - yes _that_ Glenn
Danzig - "Black Aria" is a must hear.
By the way, I bought one of the SiD shirts from the first
batch, very cool, if you missed out convince Shag to make more
and buy one.
Related Bands Dan <vilkata@iastate.edu>
Probably already been mentioned, but Fates Warning's
latest album, "Parallels," sounds a lot like Queensryche to me.
But they don't sound like they're actually _copying_ Queensryche,
so I like them.
Related Bands Darren <darren.wilkes@bj.co.uk>
I'd just like to mention that myself and a friend of mine
were very disappointed with the "latest" Dream Theater album. We
were hoping for something with a bit more Queensryche-esque
"bite." Unfortunately, it just doesn't hack it. I recommended
it to him because of recommendations from this mailing list!
He doesn't have net access, but he is still an avid
reader of SiD because I print them out for him! I wonder how
many more people are effectively "subscribed" to SiD in this way?
I seem to remember listening to a Dream Theater album
about a year ago called something along the lines of "Where
Heaven and Hell Meet" or something cheesy like that. Anyone
remember the real name? That was quite a good album - there were
a few good songs on it at least.
{That'd be "When Dream and Day Unite." -sh}

That's all for now - SiD will be coming your way again
next week. Oh, one parting note - if anyone out there is a user
of version 2.0 of the GEOS operating system on a PC, e-mail me.
