_Screaming_in_Digital______________________________Editor's Note_
Greetings once again, and welcome to December. As I say
at this time every year: If you are losing your account over
winter break, I'd much rather find out from you than from the
postmaster at your site. Therefore, if this is the case, please
send mail to queensryche-request@pilot.njin.net letting me know
that you'll need to be unsubscribed. Otherwise, I'll keep
sending the digest until I get an error message saying you don't
exist.
A large chunk of this issue (at the end) involves related
bands. While I don't mind people asking questions and giving
answers about related bands, after the initial question and
responses, please take discussion to e-mail or Usenet news, so
that we don't have long threads about non-Queensryche topics.

Gonna Get Close to You Rich <cg181fax@icogsci1.ucsd.edu>
What is the deal with 'Gonna Get Close to You?' Is this
a cover tune? Who or what is Dal Bello? I think this is one of
the high points of "Rage for Order," and my friend likes this
song best of all the Queensryche material, so I am curious as to
its nature.
{Lisa Dal Bello is a Canadian singer-songwriter,
who originally wrote and recorded 'Gonna Get
Close to You.' The Queensryche version is a
cover. -sh}
Real World Stef <sewatson@eos.ncsu.edu>
I can't believe John was disappointed in 'Real World!'
I found it quite the appropriate addition to the movie as well as
an awesome routine song for dance or colorguard. You have to
remember that when the movie people look for songs, they look at
what has already made an impact, and they seemed to want the same
impact as 'Silent Lucidity' in what they were looking for. As a
result, Queensryche turned out a song that nearly matched the
impact of 'Silent Lucidity,' even though the first time around is
hard to beat when it comes to Queensryche! 'Real World' was
awesome.
New Album's Odds Mike <mgorman@eve.assumption.edu>
I read the response to my question about the new album's
odds and I think I may have been misunderstood. I am not talking
about pop-metal bands. What I am talking about is the failure of
bands like Dream Theater (one single received airplay off a
outstanding album), Saigon Kick (new release "Water" which is
incredible is receiving no airplay), and Extreme ("3 Sides"
critically acclaimed, commercially ignored). Is there a place
for Queensryche's music or will they pull a Metallica and sell
out?
{If they make an album somewhat less commercial
than "Empire" but with more artistic integrity,
they might achieve a degree of commercial success
due simply to the number of new fans attracted
by "Empire" who will buy the new one. -sh}
Halloween? Rich <clarkr3@rpi.edu>
Recently, I heard a song called "Halloween" on a radio
station WBCR 88.3, Troy NY. I didn't hear who the group was that
sang the song, but was almost absolutely sure it was Geoff Tate
singing. It sounded exactly like back when "The Warning" album
was recorded because all of the vocals and especially the screams
sounded exactly like him. I know Queensryche never released a
song by this name and would love to find out who sang it. By
the way, the overall song was at a much faster pace, like speed
metal. Please help me find out who this mysterious group is.
Scotty Rock? Brian <bvc8995@tamsun.tamu.edu>
Has anyone else noticed that Z-Rock has been playing
'Anybody Listening?' a lot lately? The entire version, too, not
the fadeout. Maybe they don't suck as bad as I thought. Anyway,
the last time I heard it, Scott Rockenfield introduced the song
as this: "Hi this is Scotty Rock of Queensryche..." What the
hell is this? Has Scott cheesed out on us? Has he always gone
by this, and I was in denial? Scotty Rock just seem so fake.
Hmmph. Just had to get that off my chest.

CD Club Order Numbers Tony <klein@seq.cms.uncwil.edu>
I finally moved up to 80's technology and bought a CD
player. Anyone out there know the order numbers for Queensryche
CDs in the Columbia House CD club? Any response would be
appreciated.
Unplugged Bootleg Paul <gallegos@arizona.edu>
I just bought from Zip's Music and Video here in Tucson
an import titled "Queensryche... Unplugged and Other Stories."
It has five Queensryche songs from the MTV Unplugged session, and
then 9 more tracks from a live concert in New York, among them
are 'Deliverance,' 'En Force,' "Queen of the Reich" and "Take
Hold of the Flame." I assume this import came from Amsterdam,
since it was stacked with a bunch of other Queensryche imports
from there.
_The_Whisper__________________________________________Discussion_
Separated at Birth Rich <cg181fax@icogsci1.ucsd.edu>
I think the most compelling Queensryche look-alike that I
have seen is Jeff Fahey, star of The Lawnmower Man, Bodyparts,
etc, who looks quite a bit like Geoff.
Geoff Playing Guitar Michael <mcph@sparc.ncpa.olemiss.edu>
I vaguely remember reading a comment in one of the files
that I downloaded from the FTP site that Geoff does in fact play
the guitar, and that he often uses a guitar to help him flush out
song ideas. However, the comment was made that he doesn't play it
well enough to perform with it (at least not anything too
complex). If I remember correctly, it also said that he plays
the keyboards fairly well, and that when he was in high school he
played trumpet in a band. It furthermore stated that when he
decided on a career in music, he decided to concentrate on
developing his voice rather than his instrumental ability.
Commercials Pawel <pgolik@genetyka.astrouw.edu.pl>
In the last SiD issue Sonny wrote about a TV commercial
which had a Queensryche tune in the background. It reminded me
that I actually heard something like that few months ago. It was
a radio commercial (can't remember what for) which undoubtedly
had 'Jet City Woman' in the background. It appeared on a local
radio station in Warsaw. So it's already here - is it a part of
the plot? :)

Offstage Musicians Gerhard <gerhard@jason.nl>
I have some old Dutch metal magazines at home, and in one
of them Geoff tells about having an extra keyboard player during
the Rage tour. When asked if this guy is gonna be a full member
of Queensryche, or on their tour-list or something, Geoff said
something non-committal like "Well, maybe I'm gonna do the
keyboards next tour."
Offstage Musicians Brian <brianm@microsoft.com>
I believe "Rage for Order" is the only tour in which they
used an off stage musician. This keyboard player, Randy (I can't
remember his last name) has played in several local bands - Sweet
Sister Sam and others. Randy has also done recording with some
other Seattle based bands. He is a great keyboard player!

Promo CD for Sale Alp <apo@umdsun2.umd.umich.edu>
I just purchased a copy of the promo cd "The Sound of
Building Empires" (catalog # DPRO-04658) and would like to get
rid of it as I feel it's not worth the $25 I paid. The tracks
are as follows:
1. Eyes Of A Stranger 6:39 (from "Operation: Mindcrime")
2. The Lady Wore Black 6:13 (from "Queensryche" EP)
3. Take Hold Of The Flame 4:54 (from "The Warning")
4. I Will Remember 4:00 (from "MTV Unplugged")
5. Silent Lucidity 6:11 (Live)
I'm asking $18 for it, or if anyone has a price they
think is better, let me know. I'll give it to the first person
who gets in touch with me, unless there are a lot of people
interested, in which case I'll have to figure something out.
Promo CDs Wanted Brian <bvc8995@tamsun.tamu.edu>
I am looking for 'Best I Can,' 'Real World,' and 'Eyes of
a Stranger' promo CDs. Please e-mail me if you know where I
might get them.
Rising Force List Igor <igor_sinyak@ccm.hf.intel.com>
Those of you not reading news probably haven't heard
about a new mailing list for neo-classical metal - Rising Force.
Discussion might include, but is definitely not limited to Yngwie
and his genre of music. E-mail me for more details.

Damn the Machine Neil <neilu@gti-ia.nl>
In response to Jorge's question about Damn the Machine,
there was a short piece about them on Headbanger's Ball the other
week. The show was covering a metal festival they played in
Arnhem, Holland with Dream Theater headlining, which I missed
unfortunately. Maybe some of the other Dutch subscribers
attended it and have more info?
From what I saw, they're a four-piece band with Chris
Poland on guitar and his brother on drums (the same guy who was
on Metalopolis). I found the music a bit hard to categorize. It
was certainly metal but wasn't as "crunchy" as say Megadeth, more
of a classic no-bullshit metal "weight." Their vocalist doesn't
have a massive range but has a tone that's different from most
metal vocalists I've heard. Apparently he writes all the lyrics
too. The album is supposed to be a bit "different" and quite
technical in places, though I haven't actually heard it.
I just think they could have chosen a better name.
People might confuse them with Rage Against the Machine! Like
the first time I heard the name Pearl Jam, I thought it was a rap
act!
Damn the Machine Jake <v066ll6m@ubvmsb.cc.buffalo.edu>
I have the Damn the Machine disk and it's pretty good.
Chris Poland (formerly of Megadeth, kicked him out for drugs
believe it or not) on lead guitar, and his brother, Mark(?) on
drums. Although very political they sound very little like
Queensryche. Fairly heavy, kinda weird. Dave Clements' vocals
are kind of weak, which is the only negative comment I have.
Dream Theater Michael <mikeb@cs.brandeis.edu>
Well, I know that this is not Queensryche, but I just
wanted to mention some stuff about Dream Theater. I know that a
lot of Dream Theater fans like Queensryche and Rush, and other
prog metal bands, and after reading something about Dream Theater
in the last issue, I thought that it would be safe to mention
this here. First of all, I wanted to state again (after posting
last year) that Dream Theater does have it's own daily e-mail
digest called YTSEJAM. For info, write me and ask, or the owners
of the digest at ytsejam-owner@bnf.com. This is a listserv list,
so you can subscribe yourself automatically by writing to
ytsejam-request@bnf.com - leave the subject line blank, and put
SUBSCRIBE YTSEJAM <first_name> <last_name> as the body of the
letter. Also, as far as Dream Theater releases go, they did just
release a new _American_ video from Tokyo. It is very good.
Finally, I wanted to mention that there are also a lot of
bootlegs finally starting to show up. You can write to me for
info on them, and I will try to answer myself, or pass along the
request to someone else who can answer them. Sorry for taking up
so much space on a non-Queensryche topic, but thought that it
would be worth it to mention.
Crimson Glory Mike <mgorman@eve.assumption.edu>
On the subject of Crimson Glory, I was wondering if
anyone out there has a copy of their first two albums. I have
"Strange and Beautiful" but I have lost their debut. If no one
is sure what is going on with Crimson Glory (Zen) does anyone
know what Midnight is up to such as new bands?

That's all for this time around, see you in another week!
It's so strange, a holiday season without a Queensryche release.
