Greetings once again from the land where the weather is
actually cool for a change. I haven't really said much in this
space lately, as I've been thinking mostly about jobhunting. Did
anyone manage to find the domestic-release LaserDiscs yet? I'm
still hoping for information on them if anyone picks them up.
I've included contact information for Mercury Rising, the band
from Baltimore I reviewed last week, since I neglected to do so
in the review. Anyway, on with the show.

        IRC Scott <swolf@aol.com>
Is there any chance that a bunch of 'Ryche fans might get
together on the Internet Relay Chat somewhere? I recently got
access to IRC and wanna play with it.
{Several of us have IRC access. Whenever I use
it, I'm on channel #QRyche. Hang out there long
                        enough and someone will stop by!  -sh}

        Mercury Rising Matt <mattm@ss1.digex.net>
Do you have any information on Mercury Rising? I'd be
interested in possibly buying a demo, or maybe even going to see
them - I live near Baltimore, only about 10 miles away.
{I forgot to put their contact phone in the last
                        issue with the review - It's (410) 665-1475.
                        Mention you heard it here. :)   -sh}

        Fandom Gerhard <gerhard@jason.nl>
I'd rather have a smaller group of hard-core fans, like
at the time of the "Rage for Order" LP, than a huge amount of
fans who come to a show to hear 'Silent Lucidity' and get shocked
to pieces because the rest of the set "is sooo different."

        Eddie's Bass Technique Squrille <c561423@mizzou1.missouri.edu>
For all of the musicians out there: What difference does
using a pick and just slapping/plucking make when playing a bass?
I have no idea since I am not a musician. I've noticed in videos
that Eddie picks on parts of 'Jet City Woman' and all(?) of
'Another Rainy Night' and 'I Don't Believe in Love.' Will
        someone please explain?

        Queensryche in Alaska? Sean <asspk@acad2.alaska.edu>
I have been a 'Ryche fan for a long time - way before
'Silent Lucidity' - and although I have seen them front for both
Def Leppard and Metallica I have never seen them headline. This
is largely due to the fact that I have spent the last four years
going to college in Anchorage, Alaska. Is anyone close enough
to the band or the decision makers, to possibly interest them in
        coming up here?
While various places to play aren't huge they're more
than big enough and we are concert starved up here. Almost all
bands sell out when they play here and there is _no_ doubt in my
mind that Queensryche could sell out a few shows. We`d love to
see them in the next year.
{I'd suggest writing to the band through the
fanclub, asking them to hit Alaska on the next
                        tour.  -sh}

Rage Songs in Shows Jorge <15062998r@servax.fiu.edu>
When Queensryche was in Miami for the Building Empires
tour, the second song they played was 'Walk in the Shadows.'
That was all for "Rage" though.

Rage for Order Poster Eddie <edju@chaph.usc.edu>
I picked up a poster today, don't know how rare it is
though. It's a promo poster for "Rage for Order" and the main
picture is the same as the black and white group photo on the
back of the CD booklet - yeah, the horrible makeup and hair-do's,
standing on the steps - but this photo on the poster is in color
instead. Queensryche is written on top of the poster (generic
font) and then a row of symbols below it. At the bottom of the
group photo was written "Rage for Order" and below this line,
the cover of the album in the center, to the left is the two
crossed daggers, and to the right is the world map in four
slices. Below these three pictures: "Available on EMI America
High Quality XDR Cassettes and Records." What, no CDs?!
It was the only copy I found there, and since "Rage for
Order" is my favorite Queensryche album, I grabbed it right away
even though the guys in the picture looked terrible! :)

Rock N Roll Comix Jorge <15062998r@servax.fiu.edu>
I have the rock-n-roll comic on Queensryche at home in
mint condition. Anybody know if it or any of the others are
worth anything? I think I have ones on Zep, Living Colour,
        Anthrax, and some more.
{I picked up the Queensryche one for $3 at a
collectibles show. They're worth just a bit more
                        than cover price.  -sh}

        German Bootleg Scott <swolf@aol.com>
I found a bootleg in Germany, I forget the title but it
was recorded live in Koeln (Cologne) and it has a few songs from
"Empire," 'Queen of the Reich,' and the entire "Mindcrime" album
        live. Anyone heard of this?
{It's not on the bootleg list in the FTP
discography, if anyone else knows the name I'll
                        put it in.  -sh}

        T-Shirt Paul <vanyel@crl.com>
Jamey asked about a shirt he had - with tri-ryches on a
black background, red circular Queensryche-and-star on the left?
front. I had such a shirt, purchased at their Atlanta show for
the "Empire" tour - it was their 'value-added' shirt, every tour
has one shirt that's a bit nicer or different and of course,
pricier :). Alas, it was stolen not long afterwards. As I
recall, it cost about $30 as opposed to about $23 for the
        standard tour shirts.

        Early Singles Jorge <15062998r@servax.fiu.edu>
What were the singles or emphasis tracks off "The
Warning" and "Rage for Order?" I read they made a video for
'Gonna Get Close to You,' and the little discography thing in
"Empire" lists two or three songs, but were those it?
{Singles were released for 'Warning' and 'Take
Hold of the Flame' in 1984, and for 'Gonna Get
                        Close to You' in 1986.  -sh}

        Geoff Smoking Gerhard <gerhard@jason.nl>
I remember reading somewhere in a magazine at the time of
the "Mindcrime" release - or was it "Empire?" - that Geoff had
stopped smoking. Dunno if he restarted or anything.

        Geoff Smoking Jorge <15062998r@servax.fiu.edu>
David Coverdale doesn't have a raspy voice? May I direct
you to track 10 on the Coverdale-Page album? You can grate
cheese with that. Don't worry about Geoff though. If you see
him hangin' with Chris Robinson or the guys from Cypress Hill,
        then start to fret.

        Geoff Smoking Squrille <c561423@mizzou1.missouri.edu>
I've been reading a lot about the smoking issue. I
recall reading in some magazine that interviewed Geoff - I think
I have it somewhere in my room, if anyone wants the info on it
let me know - in 1991 or 1992. Geoff stated that the entire
band had quit smoking for the Building Empires tour. There are
several different ways to take this, so those of you in the know
will have to clarify for the rest of us. I also recall reading
somewhere (it would take a lot of digging to find this one) that
Geoff said he started smoking in 1986. Someone clear up all the
smoke for the rest of us!

        Record Label Change Jorge <15062998r@servax.fiu.edu>
Someone wrote about how record companies are planning to
shift artists from their labels in order to accommodate musical
genres. I don't know what anybody else thinks, but this just
adds to something scary going on in music: people still insist on
labeling their music. These aren't the old days where you either
wore spandex and hair spray or jeans. MTV insists on feeding us
a show called "alternative nation" twice a day, and that show
basically consists of what they play any time else throughout the
day minus Janet Jackson and Bon Jovi. I haven't seen an entire
"Headbanger's Ball" in ages, but when I flip through it, it
doesn't seem that different. I'm trying to make a point here
somewhere, hopefully someone will help me try to figure out what
I'm trying to say. By the way, where will Queensryche fit in
        EMI's new "plan?"
                        {They won't fit.  That's the problem.  -sh}

        Wanted: Livecrime-CD Brian <dyetb@ahecas.colorado.edu>
This seems like a weird request, but what the heck - I am
looking for the "Operation: Livecrime" box set _without_ the CD,
but with the box, libretto, and video. Anyone want to sell an
        incomplete set?

        EMI Factoids Squrille <c561423@mizzou1.missouri.edu>
I found some slightly interesting information on EMI as I
was throwing books around. For a lot of sources, one must look
under Thorn-EMI. All my information was taken from: The
Directory of Multinationals, vol. 2, K-Z, M Stockton Press,
Macmillan Publishing LTD, 1989, pages 1270-1273.
EMI started out "in the gramophone industry in the late
19th century." They also ended up dabbling in radar (WWII) and
the medical technology industry (x-rays). They've since dumped
all that. "EMI Music is one of the world's 'Big Five' recording
and music publishing companies, with a network of operation in 37
        countries."
"The US $337 million purchase of a portfolio of 250,000
music copyrights in early 1989 lifted EMI Music to joint first
place in the world league of music publishers with 12% of the
market. The portfolio was bought from SBK Entertainment World, a
private company which bought the music publishing interests of
        CBS in 1986."

        Turn It Down! Than <nrbogan@athena.mit.edu>
I realize it was just an off-hand comment at the end of
the last digest, but I'm afraid I have to represent the anal side
and object to the idea of cranking Queensryche in the dorm room.
The reason people get scared when I tell them I'm a metal fan and
that no one will hire someone wearing a Queensryche T-shirt is
because so many metal fans are inconsiderate a**holes who play
their music so f***ing loud that no else around can do anything.
I'd like to think that the people on this digest could be leaders
in improving the reputation of metal fans worldwide. It's damn
good music, and you don't have to be scum to listen to it. Sorry
to over-react, but let's think about it.
