        _Screaming_in_Digital______________________________Editor's Note_

Greetings! Yes, here it is, volume 100. And I remember
thinking issue 10 was a big deal! As longtime readers will note,
the header's been redone to an extent, some of the topic headers
are a bit more informative, and I've gotten rid of the all-caps
article topics. I also completely rewrote the FAQ; the new one
is up for FTP, and might also be cropping up on Usenet shortly.
Get it, read it, send me any suggestions on how to improve it.
But anyway, enough of this, on to more important things.

Seems as if my error in forgetting to post the label
number for the Japanese import "Building Empires" Laserdisk is
being redeemed by the fine folks at Pioneer. "Building Empires"
is being domestically released on Laserdisk on September 8th.

I just saw a listing in the alt.video.laserdisk newsgroup
of upcoming releases, and one of the ones listed was
Queensryche's "Building Empires." Street date is September 9th,
1993, and list price is $34.95. Psyched!

        Rush & DT Neil <neilu@gti-ia.nl>
I'm afraid I have to stand up and be counted as one of
the Queensryche fans that is not over-keen on Rush. They can
certainly play well and have great technical ability. I just
find them _too_ technical, almost clinical, and that means that
it loses some of the feel (which I think is important). Dream
        Theatre are pretty good though.

        Invisibility Paul <pinchoff@eli584.ateng.az.honeywell.com>
Like Christina, I would like to see Queensryche do
something, if only to give us something to talk about in SiD. I
am also kind of tired of hearing about other bands that people
like, bands that sound like Queensryche, bands that could open
for Queensryche, bands that could cover Queensryche songs, bands
that don't sound like Queensryche but make long albums, etc. It
would be nice if they put out more albums and did more
appearances, like other bands. But then, if they were like other
        bands, they wouldn't be Queensryche!

        Beavis/Butthead Brian <vhalen@acs.bu.edu>
What videos by Queensryche do you think Beavis and
Butt-head would like? It's tough to say, since they don't like
videos that tell stories - they didn't like 'Legs' by ZZ Top
because it told a story. For some reason I think they'd like
'Eyes of a Stranger' because of its drums. As far as 'Silent
Lucidity' goes, they'd be like, "Huh? I'm dreaming." I also
think they'd like 'Best I Can' for some reason I'm really unsure
of. Anyone care or have opinions?
                        {Hmmm... 'Nightrider' maybe?  -sh}

        Longevity John <jaegard@thunder.lakeheadu.ca>
What do you think of Queensryche's longevity? I liked
Geoff Tate's comment at the end of "Building Empires" to the
effect that "the next album is a new challenge to do something
different." I like how Queensryche refuses to be safe and
release album after album of the same kind of stuff. (A big
reason why I dislike Def Leppard.) I really like the diverse
sounds of their albums, from the brooding "Rage for Order" to the
kick-ass urgency and operatic power of "Mindcrime" to the
musically ambitious, groundbreaking "Empire." Who's to say we
won't see Queensryche around in 18 years?
If Queensryche could manage to stay as true to their
roots as Rush while still giving each album a different sound
then I would have no problem with attending their concerts when I
        hit my forties.

How about Galactic Cowboys? While I would like to see
them headline a club tour, it'd be great to see them get some
good exposure on a big tour, and they are *great* live. Damn The
Machine would make for a good opener as well.

        Musicfest Kevin <ryche@delphi.com>
The Milwaukee Musicfest that went on August 8th was a lot
smaller than I expected, but as for the Queensryche merchandise,
        Ryche-o-plenty! What I picked up:
                Autographed 206 EP for $30
Glossy of a Building Empires Ad $3
Queensryche Rock and Roll comic $3
                7" Best I Can $5
Tour program of the Monsters of Rock w/ Queensryche,
excellent photos, 3 pages to be exact, for $5
What I couldn't afford, or I couldn't make up my mind:
                Empire promo poster $10
Walking in the Shadows Bootleg CD $25
Many other CD and Cassette bootlegs for around $20-$25
                Live in Toyko $65
7" Silent Lucidity (exactly like the CD double import,
except this was orange instead of purple) $10
Many video bootlegs for around $30 each
Many mint magazines for around $5-$10 each
I think that about covers it. Anyone out there go? If
you did and I missed something, let me know.

        Musicfest Al <mikkolaa@iscmed.med.ge.com>
Thanks to Kevin who provided me with the info, I was able
to attend the Milwaukee Musicfest on August 8. While I wasn't
able to find everything I was looking for, I did manage to pick
up some Queensryche material. I found a 'Jet City Woman' CD
single that had 'Queen of the Reich' on it instead of live
'Empire' like the version made in Holland I already own. The live
'Walk in the Shadows' was on this one as well. This CD was made
in the UK. The cover artwork was the same as that in the inside
front cover of the Holland version, except the colors were
slightly different. The inside front cover artwork of this one
has a picture of the guys in what looks to be a warehouse. There
were several copies of it at several different vendors; I got
mine for $10 - cheapest I found. I also saw a version, same
artwork, for $4 that appeared to only contain 'Jet City Woman.'
It was wrapped, so I couldn't open it to make sure. Has there
been any prior mention of these two versions of the 'Jet City
        Woman' single in the digest?
I also found several vendors with Queensryche concert
videos for sale. One guy had a tape that contained two different
live "Mindcrime" sets, and several complete "Building Empire"
concert tapes. I bought one of the Syracuse, NY concert -
picture and sound are actually pretty good. They had one of the
Detroit show that contained 'The Lady Wore Black' as a closer
instead of 'Silent Lucidity' that I would have preferred, but the
quality was much poorer. I also saw a copy of "The End of the
Silence" CD boot, but for $50 it was out of my price range!
All in all, the day was well worth the time and money
spent! I'll have to go back next year.

        Rare CD? Kristina <ktsutton@papaya.wustl.edu>
I recently bought a CD titled "Last Strike of the Empire"
that was recorded live at a Ludwigsburg concert in 1990. It has
most of the songs from "Operation: Mindcrime" but also includes
'Silent Lucidity' and 'Take Hold of the Flame.' I think the CD
is great, but I was wondering if it is at all rare. I don't see
many Queensryche CDs at the record store where I shop, so when I
saw this one I immediately grabbed it.
                        {As a bootleg - that's what it is, if you hadn't
guessed - it's harder to find than an official
release, but it's hard to say which bootlegs are
                        the rarest.  -sh}

        New Release? Yohanna <userx71b@mts.cc.wayne.edu>
I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about a new
release of old songs called "Unplugged and Other Stories." The
local radio station in Detroit, WRIF 101.1, has been playing the
unplugged version of Della Brown and crediting it to the
aforementioned. Could it be just a promotional release, or
something more? I haven't seen anything like it in any of the
        stores, new or used.
{It's a bootleg CD which includes songs from
performances in 1983, 1985, and the MTV Unplugged
                        show.  I'm surprised WRIF plays bootlegs.  -sh}

        Bootlegs Kevin <ryche@delphi.com>
This week I happened upon some bootlegs worth mentioning.
"Enforce" - I have this one on CD. I've been told it
used to come on 2 LP's. The sound quality is very good for being
as old as it is. It's from Detroit, December 10th, 1984.
"Monsters of Rock" - Donington, UK, September 9, 1991.
The sound quality isn't as good on this one. But nonetheless, I
did enjoy the ending to 'I Don't Believe in Love.'
"Breaking the Silence" - I have no idea where this one
is from, and it's not the one listed on the FTP site. This one
sounds a lot like "Operation: Livecrime." Here's the track list:
        'Anarchy-X,' 'Revolution Calling,' 'Operation: Mindcrime,'
'Speak,' 'Spreading the Disease,' 'The Mission,' 'Suite Sister
Mary,' 'The Needle Lies,' 'Electric Requiem,' 'Breaking the
Silence,' 'I Don't Believe in Love,' 'My Empty Room,' 'Eyes of a
        Stranger,' and 'Silent Lucidity.'
This was put out by a company called Hallmark, no _not_
the greeting card company. The catalog number is HM 001. The
one thing that really gets me is the fact that there is only one
track on the entire disc. No advancing to the song you want.

        Replace Geoff? Scott <aa458@freenet.carleton.ca>
Tough decision - life as we know it would not be worth
living. Hmmm, how about Judas Priest's ex-singer, Rob Halford?
Mind you, if that were the choice, ballads along the lines of
'Silent Lucidity' may be out of the question. It sure would add
one hell of an edge to the harder tunes!

        Replace Geoff? Kevin <ryche@delphi.com>
Geoff leave the band? That would be like Jerry Garcia
leaving the Grateful Dead. _Not_ a chance!

        Replace Geoff? Neil <neilu@gti-ia.nl>
Some of Yngwie Malmsteen's past vocalists were pretty
decent, such as Mark Goals or Jeff Scott Soto. What ever
happened to them? It would certainly add an almost operatic feel
        to their material!

        Replace Geoff? Alan <alanb1925@aol.com>
I have a couple ideas in response to Jorge's question.
Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam doesn't have Geoff's range, but watch
the 'Jeremy' video and think Tate. Michael Kiske of Helloween
would be an interesting choice. He's got the pipes to pull it
off, and his light sense of humor would be a paradox to Geoff's
moody side. Steve Benito, who used to be in Heir Apparent and
now in a band called Suite Sister Sam, has every bit of Geoff's
range. Check out "One Small Voice" on Metal Blade, its not his
best but... His only problem is his ego really gets in the way
of his talent. I knew him in Heir Apparent and I have some
demos where he wails, and he can pull it off live too. Another
idea, also from Seattle, is Ted Pilot, who was the front man for
5th Angel. Alas, he now makes more money as a Dentist. Tony
Martin of Black Sabbath would be a possibility too.
{Didn't Suite Sister Sam _open_ for Queensryche
                        in Seattle at the end of the last tour?  -sh}

        Movie Kevin <ryche@delphi.com>
Here's how I would want it to be for an "Operation:
        Mindcrime" movie.
Nikki: Tom Cruise is a good choice, or maybe even
        Harrison Ford.
Mary: Julia Roberts! As for Uma Thurman, why? She's
too weird. Jodie Foster? Well, maybe?
Dr. X: John Malkovich is a very good choice, but I
would also like Anthony Hopkin. He did a very good job in
Silence of the Lambs. Donald Sutherland is another of my
        favorites.
Father William: How about an older Willam DeFoe? Or an
        older Alec Guiness?
Music: Jerry Goldsmith or Michael Kamen.
                Director: Francis Ford Coppola

        Neue Regel John <jaegard@thunder.lakeheadu.ca>
I need to know what 'Neue Regel' means. It wasn't
covered in the FAQ. In the context of the song it seems to
indicate "new regime" or "new order." I'm in the process of
drafting up a story based on my interpretation of "Rage for
Order." Email me if you want to read my outline.

        Real World Eddie <edju@chaph.usc.edu>
In the September issue of Guitar World, the Last Action
Hero soundtrack was being reviewed in a satirical scenario in
which Arnold Schwarzenegger was in a business meeting with the
label executives of Columbia Records. After hearing the
soundtrack, Arnold had the following to say:
"Who is responsible for da vimpy power ballad by
Queensryche, Aerosmith and Def Leppard? Hmmm... no one vill take
responsibility? Dat is _very_ unfortunate. Because I thought
dey vere a good idea. Dey fit the Arnold of da Nineties. Da
_new_ Arnold. Da sensitive, _caring_ Arnold.
"But who is dis Michael Kamen, and who let him urinate
all over Queensryche's otherwise fine 'Real World?' The man
sounds like he learned to arrange strings at the Hollywood School
of Elevator Music. If I had the time to find him, I'd..."
                Well put, Arnold.
