_Screaming in Digital______________________________Editor's Note_
Hello again, everyone! I hope those of you celebrating
Passover and Easter this past week had a good holiday.
"Screaming in Digital" reached a milestone, topping the
1000-subscriber mark. My thanks to everyone who has made it
possible, and compliments to Regan, the 1000th subscriber.
I've come up with layouts for the T-shirt, and have put
them on the FTP site (Glia) in /pub/queensryche/files/images.
The filenames are t-front.gif and t-back.gif. Please feel free
to look at them and send me any comments or suggestions. I have
a greyscale screen, but the medium shade is _supposed_ to be red!
The images are half-size, the actual size on the shirts will be
1 foot square.

WHAT'S GOING ON? blitzer@wybbs.mi.org (Don)
Any idea what the new Queensryche album is going to be
called? What are the guys up to right now (besides recording)?
Have they ever participated in the MTV rock n' jock baseball
games?
GEOFF'S TRAINING af07984@academia.swt.edu (Andrew)
Do you know what kind of vocal training Geoff Tate had?
I read that he had 5 lessons and then mastered the rest on his
own. Are there any articles concerning this?
WARRIOR SOUL lmeriwether@macalstr.edu (Laura)
OK, I have to speak up here. I am an avid Warrior Soul
fan who attended a show in Denver, Colorado while Queensryche and
WS were on tour together. It was the best show I have ever seen-
BOTH parts. In fact, I was practically hoarse by the time
Queensryche made it on stage.
I'm not trying to start a huge flame war here, but I'm
just getting a little sick of people bashing Warrior Soul because
they have a politics and stick to it, refusing to dilute it for
anyone. I am especially surprised to find it here because from
looking at a song like 'Spreading the Disease' it appears to me
that Queensryche's politics and Warrior Soul's politics are
essentially the same.
Go right ahead and insult Warrior Soul for playing songs
that are worthless musically, but to dis a band because they're
rejected by an apathetic crowd who couldn't care less about the
hell our world is becoming is completely ludicrous.
{If anyone _does_ want to start a flame war in
response to this, take it to Usenet, thanks! -sh}

CLOTHES ENCOUNTER mussk@uxa.ecn.bgu.edu (Scott)
I had the fortune to see the Building Empires tour twice
in two weeks - once in Cedar Rapids, IA and once in Peoria, IL.
The shows were great and I'm sorry if any of you missed it. A
friend of mine had backstage passes for the Cedar Rapids show and
took my jean jacket back with her for autographs. It has a
_very_ good airbrush painting of the "Empire" cover and now
proudly sports Chris, Eddie, Michael, and Scott's signatures
right above the painting. Don't know where Geoff was, but
everyone else commented on how much they liked it.

QUEENSRYCHE T-SHIRTS asspk@acad2.alaska.edu (Sean)
I used to have one Queensryche shirt that was black with
a picture of Dr. X on the front and a few bullet holes in him and
the crowd scene from the cover on the back, with the words
"Operation: Mindcrime" or some such on it. It was my favorite T
until it disappeared during a move, you wouldn't happen to know
if the fan club still has that shirt - as their merchandise page
is a little vague - or where else I could get a new one?
_The Whisper__________________________________________Discussion_
THE YOUNG ONES avery@utkvx.utcc.utk.edu (Regan)
I was wondering if anyone has said anything about
Queensryche's thanks to "The Young Ones" on "Rage for Order."
I was curious as to whether they were one of the many bands who
"appeared" in the living room on the show. I'd like to know if
anyone knows which episode they were in (if that is why they
thanked the show).
CHRIS'S VOICE mussk@uxa.ecn.bgu.edu (Scott)
I have a video tape of some miscellaneous Queensryche
stuff that I taped from eMpTyV and other normal sources, and I
have come across something very interesting. Upon viewing a few
songs recorded from the "Rock in Rio" thing, I notice that Chris
has a few lines in some of the songs. Namely "no I won't let it
go" and other backing-vocal-type stuff that comes out quite
clear. His voice sounds very good - I think it would be cool to
hear him do a whole song on lead vocals.
TRI-RYCHE ORIGIN jimd@sscl.uwo.ca (Jim)
Does anyone know where Queensryche came up with their
logo? I am referring to the pair of wings and dagger symbol. Is
there any significance to this. I noticed it was on a building
in the Gonna get close video but I am not sure if this was just
a prop made for the video.
{Yes, it was just a prop, the symbol goes back
to their first EP. It's just something they
thought looked neat. Some - if not all - of
the logos which appear on the EP were drawn by
Scott Rockenfield's brother, Todd. -sh}
WAITING FOR 22 bjross@mailbox.syr.edu (Brian)
Another hypothesis nobody's suggested yet... Since Dr.
X's operation is probably bigger than just Dr. X and Nikki,
perhaps 22 is referring to somebody with instructions or the
like. Sort of like a code number so that Nikki can't take
anybody with him when/if he gets busted, as in "Video Mindcrime,"
in the 'I Don't Believe In Love' video, where he is being
interrogated. Or maybe it has a double or triple meaning.
_The Killing Words_________________________Babble Interpretation_
DR DAVIS... AGAIN jlee@weird.miami.fl.us (Jason)
I heard the soundbite "Dr. Davis..." of Mindcrime infamy
twice in a movie yesterday. In the hospital, that bite kept
repeating over and over every few minutes.
{I wish they'd stop using that clip, really! -sh}

THINGS WANTED dwb4025@rigel.tamu.edu (Dave)
Wanted: the CD "Evolution Calling." I have many rare
recordings to trade, and will make it worth your time.
Also wanted: Metal Shop radio show interviews with Scott
and Eddie during the Empires tour.

KERRANG ARTICLE (2/2) phils@phrog.att.com (Phil)
from Kerrang!, issue No 433, March 6, 1993, page 26 (c) 1993 EMAP
The 'Ryche Way! by Dave Reynolds
A decade later, and Queensryche are in the midst of
piecing together their latest recorded work. DeGarmo, somewhat
disappointingly, points out that there is "not much to report,
other than we're all really excited about it".
"We feel we've got some good stuff, but I don't really
like to speculate on things until they're done. There are no
song titles to report simply because things may change. But
we're working really hard on everything to ensure that everything
is absolutely perfect."
In the light of 'Empire's success, do you feel any
pressure to come up with something as good, if not better?
"Had we rushed in straight off tour, then, I guess we
would nave felt some pressure. But because we took a healthy
break after a couple of pretty serious years of recording and
touring, then we don't. And we needed to have that break, to
step away from the lights and recharge our batteries before
regrouping.
"Once we'd got back together, we found that we were
starting from a different point than we had on previous projects.
I don't think our approach has changed any; it's just that we're
more confident, in that we don't have to all be in the same room
at any one time to work on songs.
"Rather than write everything and then record, we find
that we're recording as we write. So we're capturing the
spontaneity of it in our homes. I actually feel that a good
percentage of things we've recorded at home will be meshed
with newer things and will make the record as they are. It's a
whole different way. A bit of a home-grown deal, really.
"The quality of the stuff we're doing at home is really
fantastic. We know that we've set standards for ourselves in
previous recordings, that we don't want to do something that
isn't going to sound right. But it's just the whole vibe of
what we're doing at home that I'm really excited about."
No producer is involved, as yet. Could this mean that
all you need is an engineer involved at some point ?
"It could well end up that way! Normally, at this point
we'd have someone picked out to do pre-production, but it's not
like that now. We know what we want in our records - but, having
said that, we do like the objectivity of having an outside party
there, 'cos you can get too close to the music."
It sounds like a set release date is out of the question
until Queensryche decide how far to go with this essentially
home-produced album. It could well be that the record doesn't
see the light of day until next year.
"I hope it comes out before then," states Chris with some
concern in his voice. "I'm sure it'll be out this year. The
pattern we did things in before, you could always predict the
month of release, but we're so into uncharted waters that I
really can't say for sure how long it's going to take us to
complete the new record. But we ARE working every day!"
So EMI haven't given you any deadlines, then?
"Not at all. They're cool. They just want us to make a
good record. It's kinda nice to have a relationship like that.
I think the days where record companies played God are over.
"EMI don't hurry us. They did get involved early on in
our career, but now the deal is that if the band and management
are happy, then they don't mess with things. Like, last time,
we just gave 'em a tape when we were done and said, 'Here, this
is called 'Empire'. See what you can do with it...'."

Have a good week, everyone, and if you're in the USA,
remember to file your tax return (and pay for wars in South
America). I hope to have cost information on the T-shirts in the
next issue. 'Ryche on!
