Welcome to March! If you sent something in and it's not
in this one, look for it next week - since this issue includes
the end of the article transcript (the first part was in v.75),
        space was a bit tight.
If you know someone who might be interested in the digest
and haven't gotten around to telling them, now would be a great
time for it. We now number nearly 950, so the 1,000 mark - like
spring - is just around the corner.

        DESERT ISLAND tjhiggin@alpine (T.J.)
It was reported here that if Geoff were stranded on a
desert island and could have only 3 albums, one of them would be
"Rainbow Rising" by Rainbow. This hit me like a ton of lead. I
don't know why I never noticed it before, but the similarities
between Queensryche and Ronnie James Dio are amazing (Dio was
Rainbow's lead singer for a time, including "Rising"). I've
been a fan of Dio for quite a while, and the influence is
obvious. Both Queensryche and Dio cover similar subject matter,
and from a similar point of view. For example, stories with
occult overtones, science-fiction-type stories, and the idea that
        love is a negative emotion.
Someone also mentioned Iron Maiden. When I first heard
Queensryche, the Maiden influence was immediately apparent. But
the recent mention of Rainbow was a real eye-opener, and has
made me see Queensryche in a whole new light. My thanks to
brianboy@microsoft for posting the original message.
{It should also be noted that Queensryche toured
                        extensively with Dio early in their career.  -sh}

        BUILDING EMPIRES GLITCHES jimd@sscl
I have a question about the "Building Empires" tape.
There are two audio glitches, one on the unplugged 'Della Brown'
another on the live 'Take Hold of the Flame.' I exchanged the
tape and got the same problem. Is this a problem with the master
tape? Has anyone else found this problem?
{There are a few spots - particularly in the live
                        tracks - where the sound is pretty bad.  -sh}

SOUND OF BUILDING EMPIRES gmg@access (Gary)
In the latest issue of "Goldmine" I discovered a CD shop
that has available the Queensryche promo disc "The Sound of
        Building Empires." Their address:
                New England CD
                PO Box 44-0319
                Somerville, MA 02144
                FAX# 617-776-2514
The price of the CD is $9.00 + $3.25 Shipping & Handling.

        206 RECORDS swg101@psuvm (Stephen)
Do you know, in round numbers, about how many of the EP's
were actually pressed and released on the 206 label. I was just
wondering because I have one and am curious as to how rare it is.
I actually bought mine last year for $9.00 (in mint condition -
the store had that one and one on an EMI label for the same price,
guess he didn't know the difference). Is there any kind of
"value" for this on the market?
{It's worth about $50-75, depending on whether
it's the first (ASCAP) or second (BMI) pressing.
                        The first was only a few thousand copies.  -sh}

        _The Whisper__________________________________________Discussion_

SPREADING THE DISEASE PAPER westomd@mail (Mike)
In the 'Spreading the Disease' paper, it was stated that
"Nikki agrees to work for Doctor X in return for large sums of
        money."
I have always believed that Dr. X gets Nikki addicted to
heroin in order to make Nikki perform the murders (can't call
them assassinations because they were of politicians and
religious leaders, but that's just me). The song 'The Needle
Lies' seems to make it pretty clear that Nikki is addicted to
heroin. Also, at the beginning of the tape Nikki says "I'll do
about anything except pull the trigger. For that I'd need a
pretty good cause." Dr. X gives Nikki this cause, both in the
anti-system propaganda and the heroin. Not only does Nikki
believe what Dr. X "preaches" about the system being so corrupt,
but when Nikki is high on heroin, he is that much more
        susceptible to more brainwashing.
Anyway, I believe that Nikki is more motivated by a
belief in Dr. X's propaganda and the desire for more heroin,
than by any desire for money.
I was told by a friend of mine that the hospital Nikki is
kept in under police custody in is run by Dr. X. Anyone know if
there is any truth to this according to anything released by
Queensryche? Also, are there any rumors of the band doing
        another thematic album?
{Nikki does work for heroin, yes, money isn't
mentioned. The libretto and the lyrics of
'Operation: Mindcrime' indicate that he was an
addict even before he met Dr. X. I've seen no
                        evidence to support the hospital theory.  -sh}

SPREADING THE DISEASE PAPER cl238527@ulkyvx (Windigo)
Also, the "dragon" reference (I feel) refers to the fact
that when one shoots heroin it burns and scars the veins. I
myself do not shoot up, but my cousin did and told me this. I've
heard the same thing from other heroin addicts about your veins
        burning.

SPREADING THE DISEASE PAPER larocqu@gaul (John)
Don't forget - on the boxed set 'Spreading the Disease'
reads "while we pay for wars in Saudi Arabia." Nice change.

I just wanted to tell you that I have heard the phrase
"Dr. Davis.. J. Hamilton" in an anthropology movie filmed partly
in a hospital and in the movie "Deadbolt," again in a hospital
        scene.
{Wow, a couple more for the list. Before this

                Rockin' Down the Door
Bellevue Band Bursts onto the Heavy Metal Scene
                Tom Phalen
                Seattle Journal-American, Friday, August 5, 1983.

                THE ALBUM

It is three days before the Paramount concert and Diana
Harris is in the back office of Easy Street Records, humbly known
as the Toilet, trying to keep afloat in a sea of confusion.
She's holding on to the lifeline that never seems to leave her
        hand: the business phone.
                "You're kidding! NO! You're kidding! Really? I don't
believe it! That's great!" Covering the mouthpiece of the
phone, she excitedly tells everyone within earshot: "The band has
debuted in the Kerrang! magazine album charts at 41 and in the
        import chart at number 2!"
The record had garnered rave reviews from Kerrang's
chief critic, Paul Suter. The magazine's influence in the
English European market is enormous. After Kerrang ran a
feature article with photos, the fan mail began pouring into
Harris' Bellevue office from England, Germany and Japan. This
for five guys who still hadn't done a live performance.

                THE CONCERT

The sound explodes like a thousand cannons. Seattle
        quake? Nuclear holocaust?
Light sprays across the stage and five demons dance
before it. Geoff, standing center, billowing white shirt,
painted-on pants and knee-high boots, thrusts his fist in the
air, and the ocean of bodies across from him responds in kind.
The band throws itself into the set. Michael, Chris and Eddie
are tight, black, metal maniacs. Running, posing, tearing at the
throat of the music. Scott the drummer rolls across a chain
link drum kit like a man trying to hammer down the world's last
        beat.
Within the first three notes of the song, "The Lady Wore
Black," the crowd is up. This is the song that had jumped from
the car radios; recognition and approval rings out. The moment
is fixed. It's the stuff of lunch break braggadocio. It's the
        culmination of neighborhood dreams.

                THE AFTERMATH

Easy Street Records, the day after:
A crowd of well wishers, record buyers and hangers-on
mill around hometown heroes. Kim Harris leans against the wall
wearing a sleeveless Queensryche shirt and a face smiling and
satisfied by the success. He gently fields the people
approaching his boys. Geoff is standing next to Chris and
they're saying thank you, thank you.
"I'll tell you," smiles Geoff, "You walk out in front of
3,000 people, and they all have their fists in the air, it's
        amazing."
"Are we doing some serious afterglow?" asks a visitor.
"Everything is fine," Kim responds. "Everything is just
        fine."
Two weeks after the concert, with the EMI recording
contract now in the offing Chris DeGarmo and Geoff Tate are at
the other end of a phone line doing imitation English accents
        and laughing.
                "ello. Chris 'n' Geoff 'ere."
"So how do you feel?" comes the question.
                "Great! Fantastic!" comes the reply.
"Because of the success of the concert or the half
million dollar record deal you're about to sign?"
"Because it's Friday and we're off work!" they laugh.
                The conversation turns to influences:
"There's been so many I wouldn't want to name just one,"
says Chris. "But if I had to mention a class act, I guess it
would be the Beatles. I've been listening to them all my life,
and I really respect them as writers."
                And lifestyles:
"I do a lot of health foods and vitamins." replies Geoff.
"I also read a lot, and bike, things like that. I try to stay
        centered."
And the future? With so much happening it certainly
        seems bright.
"Actually," says Chris, "It's kind of overwhelming. At
this point, probably the most exciting thing of all is that
we'll get to quit our day jobs and get paid just for the
        privilege of playing."
That day is fast approaching. They have signed with
EMI. In two weeks they fly to L.A. to film a video for MTV.
The list of offers for tours is growing; they can afford to pick
        and choose.
This week, Queensryche gave their daytime employers
        notice. The door is open.
