                Greetings, and welcome to February! Happy day before
        Groundhog day, for those who celebrate such things. Guitarists
        may be interested in the next "Guitar School" (March 1993) issue;
        the maintainer of the Official Queensryche Archives mentioned it
        contains a lengthy technical article with many examples.

        UNPLUGGED EP?                   khiggins@nyx (Ken)
                This evening I heard the acoustic version of "I Will
        Remember" on a local radio station from the Unplugged session.
        They said it was part of a new EP. Could it be? The Unplugged
        show is an EP? Makes sense, since the new album won't be out
        for a while.  Any info?
                        {The EP they're referring to is probably the CD
                        "The Sounds of Building Empires," a promotional
                        item.  I believe it contains that track.  -sh}

        UNPLUGGED EP?                   Ryan_BM@cc (Bob)
                Any news on an "Unplugged" EP? I haven't even seen any
        footage over here in Australia. MTV is little more than late
        night 'disco with pictures.'
                        {No word yet, I've bugged the usual suspects
                        about it, no answer thus far.  -sh}

        NEW ALBUM/ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY  jlee@weird (Jason)
                Foo! I was wondering why I just received another
        "Building Empires" postcard in the mail. Arrrrrrgghh. New album
        speculated early _next_ year? I'm dying here! Well, ok, not
        really, but it's sure as hell going to be interesting what they
        come out with. The person who did the review of "Building
        Empires" for Entertainment Weekly gave it a C. I didn't expect
        any better, I started getting their subscription about 4 issues
        ago, and most of their reviews aren't fair, their writers stink,
        and they make cracks at the rock/metal industry. Let me put it
        to you this way, the #1 album for last year was Neneh Cherry's
        album, with an armful of basic glam pop and country to fill the
        rest - bah!
                        {The review, along with more comments on it, can
                        be found later in this issue.  -sh}

        MINDCRIME PICTURE IN USSR maksymc@gnu (Chris)
                I saw the painting on the cover of "Operation: Mindcrime"
        on CNN last summer in one of the political buildings in the (now
        former) USSR. They were interviewing some political yahoo in
        front of a wallsized painting of that crowd. Anyone else see
        this? I didn't have time to tape it, and now I'm kicking myself.

        DOUBLE ALBUM?                   kflanagn@umaxc (Poet Warrior)
                I was hypothesizing and thought that since they said on
        the last tour that they wouldn't perform the "Mindcrime" album in
        its entirity after that tour, that they would need a lot more
        material for a show, and that since every album until now has
        come out on a regular two-year cycle, that they were working on a
        double album.
                        {It would be an interesting idea, certainly, and
                        give them reason to take a long time. Double or
                        not, though, they're putting a lot more time and
                        work into the new one than ever before.  -sh}

        RARE STUFF & BOOTS dwb4025@summa (Dave)
                When I got home, I found out my father had run into a
        poster collector who has some early early flyers/promo stuff for
        the guys when they were still under the name The Mob! I wrote
        the guy a letter and got an answer. They are handbills from the
        Metalfest (1981) and Metalfest II (1982) shows. The '81 show
        featured The Mob, which at that time included all members of the
        band except Geoff, and also Myth, which was at the time Geoff's
        band. The second show only had Myth, but not sure if it still
        included Geoff at that time. Unfortunately, all he has from
        these shows are handbills from the concert which I imagine just
        list the bands and times for them to play, no photos, etc. I'm
        still trying to decide whether or not to purchase these items...
        If only i could find a recording from these shows! He also had
        a concert video I've ordered from '88, and a Seattle newspaper
        article from '83.
                I checked out the local import record places in Fort
        Worth, and nothing much new. I found one promo-only 12" single
        of 'Eyes of a Stranger' back when "Mindcrime" was released, but
        it is rather pricy. Had nice artwork, and I was tempted. Also,
        EMI released a Christmas tape that had tons of songs from
        different EMI label musicians, including one track from
        Queensryche. I can't remember now which one it was, but it was
        off "Mindcrime."
                For anyone who's interested, there is a place in
        Arlington Texas that has several copies of the "Anarchy-x" CD.
        It's a boot, but I'm not sure where from. I think it is $35.
                        {I think that boot's from Amsterdam.  -sh}

        OPERATION EMPIRE NUMBERS        maksymc@gnu (Chris)
                As a matter of personal interest, I was curious as to who
        has what number of the "Operation Empire" boxed set (1000
        worldwide) and where they are located. Here in Eugene, Oregon,
        I have #200 and a friend has #777.

        1983 SEATTLE MAGAZINE ARTICLE dwb4025@summa (Dave)
                I just got a Seattle magazine today. It is in great
        condition, called "They Entertain Us," from August '83. It was
        one of the complimentary magazines given away at music stores, I
        believe. The cover has an early photo of the band, taken just
        after their signing with EMI. It has Queensryche with the EP's
        text style on the bottom of the cover.
                One of the ads in the magazine goes as follows:
        "Morgan Sound, sound reinforcement experts. Washington's largest
        sound reinforcement company congratulates Queensryche on signing
        with EMI records..."

        DETROIT VIDEO BOOTLEG           hhillman@trentu (Hugh)
                I was at a record show in Whitby and saw a video from
        Detroit on the "Building Empires" tour. It was pro-shot. Do you
        have any background info on this show? Was it ever broadcast?
        It looked like a complete "Building Empires" show. I didn't buy
        it as the quality was dodgy; I am attending the London, Ontario,
        show in a couple of weeks and think that I will be able to find a
        better copy there.

        OLD IMPORT POSTER               dwb4025@summa (Dave)
                This weekend I'm gonna go back home to Fort Worth, and I
        know that one music store has several copies of an old import
        poster of Queensryche. I'm probably gonna pick up whatever ones
        they have left, to sell to folks over the digest. The poster is
        from 1985, the UK, and shows the band. Nothing fancy, just a
        rare poster.

                Speaking of Eddie spottings, I was nearly run over by
        him about a block from Geoff's! I've been running into all of
        them, except Chris lately.
                        {Good idea! I'd never thought of meeting famous
                        people by jumping in front of their cars.  -sh}

        _The Whisper__________________________________________Discussion_

        IRON MAIDEN INFLUENCES          donnell@mermaid (Judex)
                If you think 'Nightrider' sounds like Priest, well, what
        about the obvious Maiden influence on 'Queen Of The Reich'?
                        {Yep, early Queensryche was also definitely
                        influenced by Iron Maiden.  -sh}

        BACKING VOCALS                  rave@carson (Trysh)
                I was sitting around listening to "The Warning" today and
        I remembered that it has backing vocals by Chris, Eddie, and
        Michael. I even checked my references and sure enough, I was
        right!
                        {Now if it just had a lyrics/credits sheet!  -sh}

        BACKING VOCALS                  kad@biosym (Kinga)
                I wonder if I can confuse "the backing vocals" discussion
        more, by quoting Chris: "In the past, he (Geoff) was generally
        doing the harmony works, he was doing most of the vocals. All of
        the vocals in the case of "Operation: Mindcrime." And with this
        album we decided to take a different approach, where, you know,
        Geoff is obviously singing all the lead stuff, but Eddie and I
        are actively... if there is a harmony part, it's not Geoff
        singing the harmony, it's me singing the harmony, or Eddie
        singing the harmony, I even sing a little bit of lead vocal on
        one of the tracks..."
                Most of the vocals in the past and in the case of
        "Operation: Mindcrime," all of the vocals. I'm not sure what
        that means, but it leaves an open window. I am curious which
        track on Empire has Chris's lead vocal. Is it Silent Lucidity?
                        {Perhaps. The "I..." part of each chorus is
                        sung by Chris and Eddie, since Geoff has to come
                        in during it, and might count as lead.  -sh}

        IMPORT POSTER                   dwb4025@summa (Dave)
                I've gotten an import poster which i am willing to sell
        or trade. It is a European import, heavy grade paper. Red with
        large black tri-ryche. The tri-ryche has a skeletal face peering
        out from it, the same image used on the 'Empire' import CD
        single. It's very nice and in perfect condition. Looking to
        trade for other Queensryche posters, promos, etc.

        ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY REVIEW     gallegos@arizona (Paul)
                (swiped from "Entertainment Weekly", issue #154, 1/22/93)
                Queensryche: Building Empires (1992, EMI, $19.98)
                Die-hard fans of Bellevue, Wash., longhairs Queensryche
        may find this 10-year, 19-song retrospective a filling visual
        smorgasbord--particularly some early clips showing off the
        quintet's blow-dried megamanes and two more recent (and austere)
        cuts from its "MTV Unplugged" session. Although the interview
        segments are pointedly filmed in downtown Seattle, casual
        Nirvana-bes shouldn't look to feast on more than slabs of
        overstated suburban metal. Rating: C - Nisid Hajari

                Now, not to slight Mr. Hajari since he is a
        'professional' video reviewer and must have lots of experience
        in reviewing music and videos, but personal opinion dictates that
        Mr. Hajari find his glasses and maybe turn *on* the TV next time.
        Yet, I can't seem to remember when Mr. Hajari actually LIKED a
        music video collection at all, so maybe his review isn't really
        worth taking note of.
