_Screaming in Digital______________________________Editor's Note_
Greetings! You may have noticed the latest wave of
advertisements for this digest on Usenet, the response to them
has been encouraging. As the ads note, the FAQ is available for
the asking. It can also be FTP'ed from Glia, for those who want
it more quickly.
Response to the survey has also been quite good, with 300
of you answering within the first 2 days. In answer to a few
questions that some of you had: Currently distribution is to
only about 800 people. Yes, I will include the results of the
survey in a digest issue. I have also sent some of the results
thus far to EMI, Q Prime, and Seattle, asking them to release an
EP of "Unplugged." An index of subject lines at the beginning of
each issue is impractical, because few submissions have topical
subject lines, but I will attempt to expand the summaries I now
give.
In this issue: responses to the Unplugged broadcast, an
Unplugged tape offer, "Building Empires" in Taiwan, Queensryche
in the Texas A&M yearbook, a backhanded newspaper compliment, the
"Mindcrime" tablature book, digital sound file conversion, lucid
dreaming, video editing gaffs, guns, and "Silent Lucidity" words.

af07984@swtexas.bitnet (Andrew) writes,
I did finally catch the Queensryche unplugged. I was
very impressed. I especially loved the version of "I will
Remember." I'd love to have that show on CD. Oh well. I think
their unplugged was much more impressive than other bands'
unplugged. To me, their unplugged versions sound very different
than their original versions. Oh well, Queensryche is just an
awesome band!
jlee@weird.miami.fl.us (Jason) writes,
I was impressed, I didn't expect eMpTyV to include
Queensryche's Unplugged performance with their "Best of
Unplugged" broadcast. They didn't advertise it, but they did
play it with the rest of the best's. A few of my friends who
didn't see their unplugged performance earlier saw it and the
response was pretty good to it! They weren't Queensryche fans
before, but now they're _begging_ me to lend me tapes! Heh heh.
bn@mndcrme.uoknor.edu (Bo) writes,
What are all the songs in the unplugged show? I had a
friend tape it for me on a HIFI vcr, and when the deck started
recording, the show was already on the air, so my tape cuts in at
the beginning of 'I Will Remember.' I've come to expect that
sort of stuff from eMpTyV. So, what did I miss?
Tina.Briones@ebay.sun.com (Tina) writes,
Since I don't have MTV I asked my brother to tape the
unplugged show last Sunday night. I got the tape back and there
were only 3 songs! My brother told me that he started it about
5 minutes late so I may have missed the first. I have half of
'Della Brown,' 'The Lady Wore Black' and 'Silent Lucidity.' I
thought this was some big thing, did MTV only show part of it?
If the first showing was a longer version I'll have
someone copy it for me but if this is it I'll just stick with
what I have. I was expecting a lot of songs for some reason.
sjs@bae.bellcore.com (Steve) writes,
Well, I dutifully set my VCR at 10:00 pm for the
unplugged session. Finally remembered and what happens? I pick
up 'I Will Remember' after it already started. Those eediots!
(yes I'm a fan of Ren and Stimpy. :^) Gotta love cartoons,
especially in my line of work! :^> )
Anyway, did I miss anything? Seems there were only 5 or
so songs that they played. Also, the picture is grainy, but that
is probably my cable company. Enough complaints!
It was definitely worth taping! I am again, very
impressed with the band's capabilities and Geoff's voice!

dwb4025@summa.tamu.edu (Dave) writes,
I celebrated my one year anniversary of meeting the guys
yesterday - lit some candles, screamed Revolution and played all
of the albums, sang 'Take Hold of the Flame' about 10 times, and
cried myself to sleep in a nostalgic method reminiscent of a
Woody Allen movie.
u8011611@cc.nctu.edu.tw (Michael) writes,
I've played electric guitar for years, most of my
techniques are learned from Eddie Van Halen. I knew about
Queensryche by chance through Guitar magazine. I went to get
their "Empire" album, and I was adrift after listening to it.
Now I have "Empire," "Operation: Mindcrime," and "Rage for Order"
on CD. It is hard to find their early work in Tower here in
Taiwan. By the way, I saw there are three copies of the video
"Building Empires" available in Tower here. I thought I could
never get it in Taiwan, so I've planned to buy it.
dwb4025@rigel.tamu.edu (Dave) writes,
Just a quick note. Our yearbooks were just released here
at A&M this past week, and I was ecstatic to see that they
printed a small story about me in it and how I met Queensryche
last December 7! It is just my small way of spreading the
disease, heh heh.
grifjm@morekypr.bitnet (Jason) writes,
There was a Queensryche blurb in the Sunday edition of
the Lexington (Kentucky) Herald-Leader. They were giving
suggestions for musical Christmas gifts, and under the "Heavy
Metal" section were giving two thumbs up to Megadeath's new
release. They said, "...no one does it harder, and no one does
it with more originality except Queensryche..." I guess that's
putting Queensryche at the top of the 'originals' list!

edju@chaph.usc.edu (Eddie) writes,
I can't believe that 'Suite Sister Mary' was left out of
the guitar tab book. Who published it, Cherry Lane or Warner? I
know Warner's always had lame format and rarely gives you a
complete portfolio. Judging by the pricetag it looked like
Warner. What a ripoff!
{Maybe 'Suite Sister Mary' will come out as a
book of its own. -sh}
4224_5201@uwovax.uwo.ca (John) writes,
I'm still not completely sure that the EP I saw with
'Scaraborough Fair' had 'Last Time in Paris' on the other side.
It was _very_ expensive that day ($12) and I wanted to wait on
it. Too bad, because the next week it was gone. Now that I
think about it it may have been 'Anybody Listening?'
{Could be - and yes, even in Canadian dollars,
that's a lot of money for 2 songs! -sh}
uslave@mcl.mcl.ucsb.edu (Sir Prize) writes,
I didn't have my CD with me when I typed up my post last
time. There's _five_ songs on the promo CD. They are:
Eyes of a Stranger (studio)
The Lady Wore Black (studio)
Take Hold of the Flame (studio)
I Will Remember (Unplugged)
Silent Lucidity (live)
darren@aerodec.anu.edu.au (Darren)
I had no response to the last request for help changing
.au to snd files. Alternatively if there is anyone out there who
has Mac format sound files of QR could they please post them
somewhere accessible.
qralston@cislabs.pitt.edu (James) writes,
Workstation users might wish to ask archie for the 'sox'
program. Once compiled, you can do something like this:
$ sox happyjoy.au -t ub -r 11025 happyjoy.snd
One can also substitute '5012', '22050', etc, for
'11025'; salt to taste. You can then download this to a Mac and
use SoundEdit to open and then save it.
Sox can also do things like changing the amplitude
(volume), as well as convert between other sound formats. It's
worth trying to decipher the man page.
{If no one beats me to it, I intend to grab 'sox'
and convert the 8kHz Sun files to 11kHz files for
Mac and PC users. -sh}
_The Whisper__________________________________________Discussion_
edju@chaph.usc.edu (Eddie) writes,
That bit on lucidity sounded crazy, but I do keep a dream
journal myself. (In cryptic language, of course. Credit should
go to Vai) and I have come across to recognizing recurring
themes/objects in my dreams, and even identical dreams being
re-run! Has this happened to anybody else?
rave@u.washington.edu (Trysh) writes,
Not only does Chris' guitars switch, but the guys seem
to change clothes really fast! Has anyone ever noticed that
they'll have on completely different clothes in 2 seconds flat!
If you pay attention to the video for "Video Mindcrime" Geoff is
wearing 3 different things. There are also parts throughout
"Video Mindcrime" where the camera operators and other people are
visible. A person in a pink or red shirt can be seen standing on
the drum riser! I wonder what the editors are thinking when
they're piecing these videos together?!
{They're asleep, practicing lucid dreaming. -sh}
_The Killing Words_________________________________Little Noises_
little_re@alice.lrc.edu (Rich) writes,
I'm listening to "Mindcrime" now (incredible coincidence)
and have jumped back to the begging of 'The Mission' there are a
few clicks that don't really sound like much. One could be a
clip being inserted in to a frame, but the one sound that I can
definitely hear is that of a round being chambered. The sound of
the gun shot is like that of a small caliber. It doesn't sound
exactly like the 9mm's that I've shot. As for the gun in
"Operation: Livecrime," from memory, it does appear to be a .38
or small caliber revolver. Wonder why they would use the sound
of an auto yet show a revolver on video?
{The revolver was originally pictured in "Video:
Mindcrime" - the centerfold of the booklet shows
two pictures of it. I suspect they just grabbed
a stock sound-bite of a gun, and didn't take time
to worry about matching it to _the_ gun. -sh}
rave@carson.u.washington.edu (Trysh) writes,
In regard to the spoken words in "Silent Lucidity", they
are "Visualize your dreams. Record them in the present tense.
Put them into a common form. If you persist in your efforts, you
can achieve a dream come true. Dream control... Help me." "Put
them into a common form" means written words.
{I thought it was "permanent form" - I'm going to
end up asking Geoff himself what they are, if we
can't settle this soon. -sh}

I missed the first song of Unplugged (I was frantically
hunting for a tape to record it), if anyone would like a copy
just E-mail me and we'll go from there.
