lots more.
_Neue Regel___________________________________________What's New_
kad@iris122.biosym.com (Kinga) writes,
As you probably already know, the Queensryche piece was
not broadcast during the "Rock and the Environment" rebroadcast.
rcollins@nyx.cs.du.edu (Randy) writes,
A local radio station was giving away what I think some
of you have been talking about being the promo CD. It was called
"The Sounds of Building Empires," a six track EP. They listed
the tracks off, but I missed most of it, as a matter of fact I
don't remember the ones I heard. I tried to win a copy, but no
luck.
I called the station a few days later to check if they
had any more to give away or maybe if they had one I could get
from them somehow. No luck there either. They said they didn't
have any more and didn't remember what tracks were on it.
The local record stores hadn't even heard of it. One guy
was a pretty big Queensryche fan and he had no idea they were
even releasing another EP. He said he'd let me know if they got
it in.
uslave@mcl.mcl.ucsb.edu (Sir Prize) writes,
I just picked up a copy of the promo CD over the Turkey
Day break. It's pretty cool, but nothing to jump up and down
over. It's got six songs, four of which are straight from
albums. The two that matter are 'I Will Remember' from MTV
Unplugged, and 'Silent Lucidity' live (from where I don't know).
Does anybody else have this CD yet? My brother works at
CEMA Distribution, which is how I got one. I tried to get him to
get me a bunch of them, but so far he's only gotten me one.
cuz@chaos.cs.brandeis.edu (Brandon) writes,
The non-commercial station I work for received the promo
CD, so I would say all radio stations will be receiving it. At
least all radio stations who would play this. As for release of
it as a CD for purchase, I doubt it.
pcrossma@cs.ulowell.edu (Paul) writes,
Well, I bought the "Operation: Mindcrime" tab book, and
I have a few things to say about it.
The songs left out of the book are 'Speak,' 'The
Mission,' 'Suite Sister Mary,' 'Electric Requiem,' and 'My
Empty Room.'
The tab is in great format - just like _Guitar for the
Practicing Musician_. It looks nothing like that cruddy tab in
the Empire book. I still don't think that it was worth the
$24.95 I paid, but there were some songs that I had to learn
how to play.
The book was put out by EMI too, how can EMI do this in
good conscience? How could Queensryche do this in good
conscience? I was disappointed when the "Empire" book came out,
but I was downright upset when I found the "Operation:
Mindcrime" book was incomplete. Anyone else care to talk about
it?

Thanksgiving was my 27th birthday, and I got "Building
Empires," my comments:
I wished 'Queen of the Reich' was included, instead of
just a teaser, loved 'Gonna Get Close to You' (I hardly
recognized them!), absolutely *hated* the discarded (no wonder)
video for 'Anybody Listening,' would have rather seen/heard the
unplugged version of 'The Lady Wore Black.' Seeing the unplugged
videos again makes me more in awe of Geoff's voice, how truly
incredible it is. Has Geoff ever recorded anything outside of
Queensryche, or been approached to at least? You would think he
would be. But then again, that may depend on any recording
contracts he and Queensryche currently have and Geoff's wishes or
priorities.
rave@carson.u.washington.edu (Trysh) writes,
What's with that reject version of 'Another Rainy Night?'
Even though it is my favorite song off of "Empire," I think that
the video is too "artsy" for Queensryche. I am glad that the
other went to MTV instead!
Also any idea why 'Take Hold of the Flame' wasn't
included? It's always been one of my faves and a lot of people
haven't seen it. I think it would have been a wise decision to
include it.
aldvp2z!cmd@attme.att.com (Christine) writes,
This may be a more appropriate question for Metal Sushi
of the official fan club, but does anyone know if they use or
analyze membership data - such as an analysis of fans by
geographic area, sex, age, et cetera - and if they use this
data to plan tour dates? Is this data available for any of us
to see? How many members does the fan club have?
{The fan club has over 8,000 members now, and I
don't think they do demographics. -sh}

kad@iris122.biosym.com (Kinga)
Dream Theater was giving a sold-out concert in a local
club. I missed it but I caught the interview they gave at the
local radio station. When asked who would they like to be
opening for if they had a chance they exclaimed, "Queensryche!"
Sounds like a great idea to me, especially after I heard the song
called 'Learning to live.'

iacs2210@penelope.oswego.edu (Bob) writes,
I have a cd single for 'Anybody Listening' that has
'Scarborough Fair' as the second track, perhaps this is the EP
mentioned in the digest.
speno@clam.rutgers.edu (John) writes,
Someone asked about converting .au sounds to Mac sounds.
I dug this up.
FTP to mac.archive.umich.edu
/mac/development/source/sunaudio2maclinear.txt
C source to convert Sun Microsystems u-law encoded audio
files to linear sound data files. The latter files can be read by
SoundMover ("Open any" mode) and converted to Mac SND resources.

I met the guys when they were here in Halifax, Nova
Scotia, Canada. They were opening up for the Metallica "Justice"
tour. I worked for a radio station, CKDU, that was promoting the
concert. I did an interview with Chris, who I found well spoken
and very interesting. I also introduced the band on stage and
talked with them after their set. They were very down-to-earth
guys, that take a serious interest in their music and their fans.
I saw their "Building Empires" tour here in Halifax.
Only a small crowd showed for the concert, but they put on one
hell of a show. The small crowd did not lower their enthusiasm
for the concert.

gerardy@cco.caltech.edu (Christopher)
Has anybody else noticed that "Building Empires" has some
pretty crafty editing, or else Chris DeGarmo is a magician as
well as a musician? I was watching one of the live tracks (I
think it was 'The Lady Wore Black') and admiring the cool designs
on Chris' guitar while he was soloing, and when the camera angle
changed, his guitar changed from being the black one with white
crosses, to the multi-colored "patchwork" design. Just an
amusing tidbit to watch for.
ckc1@lehigh.edu (Cedrick) writes,
Yeah, I'm into industrial stuff. In fact I'm gonna be
seeing Ministry at Madison Square Garden Thursday.
I can see some of the similarities between a band like
Queensryche and some industrial bands. I grew up a metal head,
but metal seems lacking in creativity these days (with certain
exceptions) so something relatively new and filled with hungry
artists like industrial music appealed to me.
That's one thing I'm concerned about Queensryche. In
the earlier days, they were hungry and raw. In a word they had
an edge. Now that they've made it, it seems that edge is
missing (i.e. "Empire"). In fact, most hard rock/metal bands
seem to be missing that edge. I think some of the new bands and
music (i.e. industrial) have picked up that hunger and edge.
What do other people think?
biswick@mik.uky.edu (Chad) writes,
I haven't had the money to buy "Building Empires" yet,
but I have seen "Operation: Livecrime," and the gun used there
is a snub-nose .38 revolver, if memory serves me correctly. The
gun used on the CD/tape/album sounds like it's getting a clip
inserted and a round chambered. It is definitely a non-revolver.
I don't know enough about guns to say what kind it is other than
what's above.
If I had to make a guess, I'd say 9mm due to popularity.
But, I could be totally wrong, and it could be a shotgun.
lofft30@snybufva.bitnet () writes,
The "surround sound" you are hearing is not special to
"Empire" alone. All recordings will do this. On some recordings
the effect is more audible. By hooking your speakers up as was
said, the "surround sound" speakers are reproducing out of phase
material which has the effect of echo. I think the "echo" is
caused by the fact that the in phase and out of phase sounds
don't reach your ears at the same time, but don't quote me on
that!
_The Killing Words_________________________Babble Interpretation_
ainsi@wpi.wpi.edu (Michael) writes,
When I heard that Queensryche was going to be playing
'Roads to Madness' on their Building Empires tour, I got out my
"The Warning" CD and listened to it for the first time in a long
time. Needless to say, it became one of my favorite songs.
Anyway, during the instrumental part of this song, Geoff
begins to say things. This is the part during the concert when
he was kneeling on the floor over a wind-blowing grate bathed in
green and red light. Does anyone know the entirety of what he
says there? I looked at some lyric sheets and it didn't seem to
have anything about it.
slayback@ugcs.caltech.edu (Eric) writes,
I believe the spoken words in the middle of 'Silent
Lucidity' are: "Visualize your dreams, record them in the present
tense, into a more permanent form." These are basically
instructions, a "how-to" for dream control beginners. First, try
and remember your dreams, every time you wake up. Write down
anything you remember in a dream journal (in the present tense).
Read through your dream journal each time you go sleep. This
will improve your chances of actually recognizing a dream when
you are in one, and will facilitate lucidity. There is a good
book on the subject, Dr. Stephen Laberge's _Exploring the World
of Lucid Dreaming_. I myself keep a dream journal and have
become lucid on a few occasions.
morpheus@casbah.acns.nwu.edu (Ray) writes,
"Visualize your dreams, record them in the present tense,
put them into a permanent form, if you persist in your efforts,
you can achieve a dream come true."

I'm looking for crazy folks in the Chicago or Connecticut
area who like (in no particular order) Queensryche, NIN,
Ministry, Social Distortion, Mozart, Black Sheep, Public Enemy
and the Reverend Horton Heat. Write me, if you do.
