        _Screaming in Digital______________________________Editor's Note_

Greetings! Back doing the Monday thing, and it sure
feels good. After all, the whole idea was to make Mondays more
fun. Thursday - payday for many folks - is enough fun anyway.
This is about it for November, but at least it's a pretty
diverse issue. I've started working with a 12k issue size, for
the time being. The 8k ones didn't really have room for too many
	different topics.
In this issue: An easier way to join the fan club,
"Building Empires," 'The Thin Line,' magazine contests, chowder,
tour jackets, 'Last Time in Paris,' surround sound, guns, 'Queen
of the Reich,' "Live in Tokyo," and speculation about the next
	album.

	rave@carson.u.washington.edu (Trysh) writes,
If anyone wants to save their stamp, they can just mail
me and let me know that they want to join the fan club. I've
been "recruiting" for the Queensryche fan club for quite a while
and I am _loaded_ with membership applications. It'll save
everyone a couple of stamps and envelopes. I also have the
profiles that are mailed out with the applications! No problem!

	ewk102@psuvm.psu.edu (Eric) writes,
I also have obtained "Building Empires." Some comments:
I really like having the older videos, because we all
know MTV would never play them - however, it sucks that we only
see about 10 seconds of 'Queen of the Reich' - i saw this video
in its entirety only once, but it was great for its cheesy
plotline, and i'd love to have a permanent copy.
The new mix for 'Eyes of a Stranger' was ok, I really
like it, but it reminds me a lot of the Ministry video for 'N.W.O
(New World Order)' - you'd think the guys could be a tad more
creative. Anyway, its fairly good, overall.
By the way, how many Queensryche fans are there that like
Ministry, or industrial in general? The messages of anger and
hate in most industrial music are very similar to Queensryche of
the "Operation: Mindcrime" era, even if the music is not.

	sjs@bae.bellcore.com (Steve)
I picked up the "Building Empires" video at Compact Disk
World for $19.99. I am _very_ impressed with this tape. I found
the more or less chronological presentation of the songs to be
excellent. I kind of agree with the band that it's shame that
only one video came off of "Rage for Order."
Is it me, or is Geoff's vocal on the MTV Unplugged
segment probably one of the best of any of the bands that have
played unplugged? I was again, _very_ impressed with the
Unplugged segments. Do you know where I can get a copy of this
segment? They only showed it twice. And to think they are
playing Eric Clapton's segment of 'Layla' like there's no
tomorrow! I like Clapton a lot, but come on eMTpyV!

	lad9452@ritvax.isc.rit.edu () writes,
During the first 30-40 minutes of my video, the sound
clips out, one or both channels at a time. This happens
continuously. Finally, by the live songs - 'Resistance' and
onward - the sound is fine.
I have a HIFI vcr, and the clipping sound is just
painful to listen to. The picture is great, which I don'
t understand. I would think that if the sound was screwed up,
then the picture part would be contaminated as well.
Looking at the tape itself, the tape appears unblemished,
unwrinkled - perfect! I would expect that there would be a
visible, physical defect on the tape but there isn't.
When I go back to exchange this tape, I'm going to ask
them to try the new one in the store for me before I walk away.

	spoon@aol.com (David) writes,
I just wanted to throw in my $.02 and say that I'd call
"The Thin Line" one of my top five favorite Queensryche songs.
It wasn't released as a single, obviously, but I don't think
that's any reason _not_ to include it on a collection.

	mcapp@nyx.cs.du.edu (Mike) writes,
Anybody know that Guitar magazine winner of the guitar
	signed by Michael and Chris?

	starr@dpe.enet.dec.com (Alan) writes,
I recently picked up the lastest CD by the band Saraya,
entitled "When The Blackbird Sings." The album was produced by
Peter Collins (well known to this group as the producer of both
"Operation: Mindcrime" and "Empire"). Inside, there's a section
of the liner notes that reads:
Saraya Proudly Presents The 1990 Chowder Award to Peter
Collins (special thanks to Eddie from Queensryche for use of the
	word "chowder")
I'm not quite sure what it all means, but it was an
interesting little tidbit that I thought people might want to
	know about.

	edju@chaph.usc.edu (Eddie) writes,
In response to Cedric's question, the next Queensryche
album will be a darker and heavier album, compared to "Empire."
It'll be more in the vein of "Operation: mindcrime." Let's hope
it'll be better than "Mindcrime" although that seems impossible
for a band that would pull an "Empire" on the old fans!

	tme33711@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu (Tom) writes,
Over a year ago I was talking to an employee at a private
record shop called Crow's Nest about Queensryche, and he brought
out this really cool denim jacket with a Queensryche design on
the back. It turned out that a friend of his designed the
jacket, got backstage at a show early in the Empire tour, and
showed it to the band. They liked it so much that they wanted
him to make a large quantity of them, as the official roadie and
band jacket! At the time, this friend was hurrying to finish
them so he could present them after the Chicago show (the store
	is in a Chicago suburb).
Then, in July, I went to the KLOL Rock-N-Roll Auction in
Houston, and one of the items that was auctioned off was the
exact same jacket. If only I had had a bidder's pass.
If I remember correctly, the design is similar to the
cover art to the "Empire" CD-single.

	4224_5201@uwovax.uwo.ca (John) writes,
The song 'Last Time in Paris' appeared in the Adventures
of Ford Fairlane soundtrack (which I have) and an EP with the
song 'Scarborough Fair.' Did 'Scarborough Fair' appear in any
	other albums?
{The EP you mention is news to me! 'Scarborough
Fair' is on the singles for 'Anybody Listening'
in the USA, and 'Empire' in Europe, but has not
been included on any albums. It was performed
			for MTV's Unplugged, but was not broadcast.  -sh}

If you're looking for "Live in Tokyo" on Beta, try:
        		Brauer Trading Ltd.
        		26 Emery Lane
        		Woodcliff Lake, NJ 07675
        		(201) 391-2828 / (800) 962-7722 (9-9 EST)
Brauer is the only mail order Betamax outfit that I know
of. I have no idea about VHS, and I don't want to know!

        _The Whisper__________________________________________Discussion_

	dsblack@iastate.edu (Vilkata) writes,
Anybody else with surround sound listen to the Empire CD?
I just hooked a Pioneer 6X9 from my car onto my system in my
room. I'm going to eventually box them and keep them in my room.
For those who don't know how to make an older receiver work
without a processor, just plug the back speaker into the right
positive and left positive output terminals (instead of one
side). Anyway, I swear some of the songs are in surround sound!
'Silent Lucidity' sounds like the back channel is an echo in an
auditorium when the guitar is playing. In the song 'Empire,' the
beginning sounds like the answering machine is the same, but the
message left on it echoes like the guitar I mentioned in 'Silent
Lucidity.' And the monologue in the middle sounds like it, too.
Then 'Anybody Listening?' also sounds like parts are in surround.
I haven't listened to much of the rest yet.
Can anybody else confirm/deny this? If you don't hear it
right away, shut off the front speakers, especially in the
beginnings of 'Silent Lucidity' and 'Empire,' and listen - sounds
like the acoustics of an auditorium. Sounds awesome to me!

	axjcs@acad2.alaska.edu (Joel) writes,
Something that I have been kicking around since I noticed
that 'Queen of the Reich' was not included on the video is that
the video might have some copyright problems. Either the
production company that produced it retained rights, and wants a
large sum to use it (_highly_ probable), or some other factor. It
does not really make sense that the band would be embarrassed
about the video, seeing as how they included 'Nightrider', a
video I am sure they don't believe is their best work.

	_The Killing Words_________________________Babble Interpretation_

	browning@symcom.math.uiuc.edu (Howard) writes,
The gun sounds an awful lot like a rifle being assembled
and loaded. However, I remember seeing a pistol on the screen in
"Operation: Livecrime." If he killed the priest at any range he
would have had to use a rifle. However, when he was arrested,
the gun he was carrying matched the one used in all the murders,
the "Livecrime" book said. Basically, a small inconsistency,
excusable given that the guys surely don't know much about
	firearms.

	little_re@alice.lrc.edu (Rich) writes,
Being a gun nut, I've tried to figure this out too. On
"Operation: Livecrime" the gun they show looks to be a .38 - a
typical revolver. But the sound heard on "Operation: Mindcrime"
is like someone chambering a round on a semi-auto pistol. That's
what my ear has picked up.

	mcapp@nyx.cs.du.edu (Mike) writes,
I'd say from the time the album was made that it was a
pistol, however in the video I'm willing to bet they used a
normal gun such as a 9mm. Of course, I haven't seen the video
either, but listened to the CD many times.
