        _Screaming in Digital______________________________Editor's Note_

Greetings, 'Ryche-'n'-Rollers! I'd like to start off
this issue by sending a big "thank you" to everyone, as the
digest is now being read by over 600 people in 18 countries
around the world. As they say, onward and upward!
Upward happens to be the direction the anticipation
level here has taken, as the release date of "Building Empires"
nears. In this issue, suspicions regarding that are confirmed,
        to an extent.
Also in this issue: confusing videos a la Queensryche,
confusing bass lines a la Queensryche, high ticket prices, a mom
taking the blame for everything, the significance of 'Love,' two
more chances, to get "Operation: Empire," and a clear case of
        sunstroke-induced delerium from Arizona.

I was in a record store the other day, and the clerk
confirmed the October 20th release date for "Building Empires."
The only other piece of information given was that it was a
        _video_ release.
{EMI confirmed to me this week that "Building
Empires" will be a "home video," and will contain
some videos of songs, presumably off "Empire,"
some concert footage, and "other stuff." They
said that while the release date is October 20th,
it will probably be early November before it's in
all stores. I suspect the major chains will have
it on the 20th, though. Publicity does _not_
know if any Unplugged tracks will be included in
                        the tape.  -sh}

I'm going to reserve a couple of copies of "Building
Empires" at the local place here, so if anyone wants a copy,
e-mail me, and I'll let you know costs and such.

During 'The Mission' on "Operation: LIVEcrime" there is a
guitar solo by Chris DeGarmo where there is a image on the screen
overlaid on Chris of what appears to be looking down a tube with
        constantly changing colours.
Toward the end of the solo a face (possibly a stone
statue) appears at the end of the tube and rushes to meet you as
the solo ends. Does anyone know what this is supposed to
represent, or is it just something that they thought looked good?

I have a question for those of you who have live video of
'I Don't Believe in Love.' Is the bass part played on a 5-string
bass or a 4-string, and during the low-D "powerbass" eighth
notes, is it done with the thumb on the open top string, or with
a pick, or what? Inquiring bassists want to know (mainly to see
if my method of doing it jives with theirs). I love playing this
song but I hate having to tune down one step for it.

        sjs@bae.bellcore.com (Steve) writes,
Is it my imagination or is getting tickets for any major
concert getting ridiculous? I tried to get tickets through
TicketMaster charge, I started calling at exactly the time the
tickets went on sale for Def Leppard. I kept trying for an hour.
Never did get through. And I was not about to wait in line for
        hours!
Don't get me wrong, I really like Def Leppard and
Queensryche, but I don't plan on waiting for hours on line, or
paying prices for sh*tty seats through some ticket agent that are
sky high! I swear, the music industry is on the way to collapse.
And they wonder why ticket sales are down! People don't have the
money to pay in the first place with the depression (oops, sorry,
the government tells us it's a recession, silly me!) going on and
        all.

I got a patch that I attached on my jacket, but I can't
wear it since it's 100F everyday here. I got a "Warning" Tour
book which is available through the fan club. It's really funny,
have you seen it? And I got a vinyl 'Silent Lucidity' single
with the poster. I'm hunting for another poster right now, but
I'm out of cash. It's my mom's fault.
{Are you blaming your mom for the weather, for
the tour book being funny, or for your financial

        _The Whisper__________________________________________Discussion_

        cassidy@cps.msu.edu (John) writes,
In his article on "Operation: mindcrime," Rob writes,
"I've heard some complain that ['I Don't Believe in Love'] is
lyrically weak ... because of the use of the 'L-word,'". I
can't believe that this is true. 'I Don't Believe in Love' to
me is one of the subtler songs on the record, and lyrically
succinct. Perhaps it doesn't have the "importance" that other
Queensryche songs supposedly have, but the song itself has a
sophistication similar to the ironic 'The Mission.' We all know
that Nikki`s mission didn't "save the world." And likewise, we
know that even though the chorus repeats, "I don't believe in
love," the verses all demonstrate that he is broken over his love
        for Mary:
                "She made a difference,
I guess she had a way,
Of making every night seem bright as day.
                Now I walk in shadows,
                Never see the light"
It is his love for Mary and his grief over losing her that
eventually leads to his depression and attempted suicide, made
        clear during the '91 tour.
'I Don't Believe in Love' does not have the complicated
metaphors, although like Rob points out, it does have a stark
imagery of the line, "I awoke on impact, under surveillance of
the camera eye," and Nikki's description of being "handcuffed and
blind". The words used are abrupt. They convey a sense of shock
and paralysis. They convey the same sense of helplessness that
is later echoed in 'My Empty Room,' although the character feels
initially only shock, as helplessness has not settled in quite
yet. But lines like "She must have lied because she never said
goodbye," demonstrate his frantic, unstable state of mind. I
don't really think that someone can really expect someone else to
say goodbye before they are murdered. Murder is, by definition,
unexpected. Nikki is not thinking logically now, and the lyrics
portray Nikki's attempt to regain his tough exterior and to
accept fatalistically this turn in his life, his attempt to deal
with the shock. "I Don't Believe in Love" is an erratic,
frantic, piecemeal, shattered song. Yet the words, in some
cases, are rather simple. But the aggregate of the simple words
and the simple constructs form a large metaphor for the state of
the character's mind. He's lying to himself, he's avoiding, he's
blaming, he's franticly crawling for a conclusion that he can come
to. The conclusion is "I don't believe in love." How can he be
hurt if he does not believe in love?
