_Screaming in Digital______________________________Editor's Note_
What? Monday again already? Yes, it's not a good thing
to realize it's Monday in the middle of the afternoon. I've got
to get used to not having a "work week" any more.
Since there wasn't much time between the last issue and
this one, there's not too much in the way of variety. Another
album review from The Rocket is included in the history section,
another song parody - yes, I finally contributed something to the
digest - is at the end, and there are a couple questions.
The "big news" this week is that the long-promised FAQ
(frequently asked questions) list is finally here. There are
bound to be revisions to it, but since this is the first public
incarnation, I've included it in the resources section.

jfdintin@eos.ncsu.edu (Joe) writes,
This memory just came to me of two guys, DeGarmo and Key,
who had at least one video on MTV and presumably an album. Could
this possibly be Queensryche's Chris DeGarmo? I don't know why,
but my mind is telling me that they are one and the same. Does
anyone else out there know about this? DeGarmo is not a
household name. I thought I heard something to the effect a long
time ago - alas my memory fades as I get on in years.
{Close, but no cigar. Eddie DeGarmo is the
member of DeGarmo & Key, which is a Christian
rock band. As to whether they might be related
in some way, I've no idea. -sh}

What's "Screaming in Digital?"
"Screaming in Digital" is the Queensryche Netdigest, as you
probably already knew. It is named after an old Queensryche
song.
How does it work?
Like many digests and mailing lists, there are special e-mail
addresses for different types of messages:
subscriptions: queensryche-request@pilot.njin.net
administration: queensryche-owner@pilot.njin.net
submissions: queensryche@pilot.njin.net
Unlike most digests and mailing lists, everything is compiled
and edited by hand in a very time-consuming manner. There is
no 'forwarding' of mail.
Where can I find files?
Files are available via FTP, as follows:
On the site glia.biostr.washington.edu, you can find:
Lyrics in /pub/queensryche/lyrics
Digest issues in /pub/queensryche/digest
Discographies in /pub/queensryche/discography
Articles in /pub/queensryche/text
Visual images in /pub/queensryche/images
On the site quartz.rutgers.edu, you can find:
Compressed digest issues in /pub/journals/Queensryche
Why is there a FAQ list?
When the digest first started in 1991, there was little need
for a FAQ list, as most of the subscribers were diehard fans
who had very few unanswered questions. As the number of
subscribers grew, the inevitable happened - new subscribers
had questions, and had no way of knowing whether they'd been
been asked in previous issues.
What's a Queensryche?
Queensryche is a band, from Seattle Washington. They have been
together since about 1983, and the lineup has remained consistent
throughout that time. The name comes from one of their first
songs, "Queen of the Reich," which they wrote while known as The
Mob, before changing their name. "Reich" is German for "Empire."
Originally, they had planned to call the band "Queensreich," but
due to concerns that they might be perceived as supporting Nazi
ideals, the spelling was altered.
The members of Queensryche are:
Geoff Tate Vocals
Chris DeGarmo Guitar
Michael Wilton Guitar
Eddie Jackson Bass
Scott Rockenfield Drums
What material has Queensryche released?
Queensryche 1983 (EP, re-released in 1988)
The Warning 1984
Rage for Order 1986
Operation: Mindcrime 1988
Video: Mindcrime 1988 (Videos from Operation: Mindcrime)
Empire 1990
Operation: LIVEcrime 1991 (Live tour video/CD boxed set)
And numerous singles.
Thus far, there have been no "greatest hits" albums, and no solo
works.
Is Queensryche working on a new album?
According to members of the band, they plan to take a break for
the first part of 1992, then begin recording again in the fall.
Reportedly this one will be less "pop" than Empire was, perhaps
a "darker" tone will prevail. Either way, the album should be
out toward the end of 1992 or beginning of 1993, if all goes
well.
A compilation of videos from "Empire" is also reportedly in the
works, for late 1992.
What are all the sound bites?
Queensryche uses a relatively large amount of sound overlays in
songs. Non-musical parts you hear may be spoken by band members,
played back from industry-standard sound effect tapes, or sampled
from other sources. As for exactly what is said in any particular
situation, it depends who you ask. Everyone hears something
different.
How can I join the official Queensryche Fanclub?
The official Fanclub can be reached at:
Try-Ryche Corporation
DBA Queensryche
Editor: Metal Sushi
P.O. Box 70503
Bellevue, Washington 98007
What is depicted on each Queensryche album cover?
Queensryche (EP): The band name in a stylized script.
On the back of the album is the same
name, a picture of the band, an early
version of the Try-Ryche symbol, and
a crowned shield with crossed swords.
The Warning: A gloved hand turning a tarot card,
"The Warning," which depicts something
resembling a face, with green beams
emanating from its eyes. On each side
is an unturned card with queen's crowns
on the back. In the background is the
planet Earth. On the back of the album
is a picture of the band.
Rage for Order: The background is a map of the planet
Earth. Superimposed on it is a Try-Ryche
piercing an image of the planet. Around
the edge of the cover are many small
symbols, most of them mathematical. On
the back of the album are pictures of the
band members.
Operation: Mindcrime: The background is a black and white image
of a huge mass of people, with World War
Two bombers flying overhead. In front of
them are pictures of two characters from
the album, Dr. X and Mary. On the front
cover, superimposed on the images, is the
"Mindcrime" image, a stylized skull in
yellow with a black brain inside it, and
a yellow Try-Ryche inside that. Zig-zag
lines protrude from the sides of the
skull, and straight ones from the top and
bottom. All the lines end in tees.
Empire: The modern rendition of the Try-Ryche,
now piercing the stacked letters E and M,
with the letters PIRE below them.
Will there be a boxed set or greatest hits release?
In late 1991, a boxed set called "Operation: Empire" was released,
but it was not a typical compilation. Rather, it contained a
specially packaged copy of "Empire," three CD singles from the
album, a badge, a necklace, and a t-shirt. Only 1000 copies were
produced, and it sold for approximately $110 US per copy.
Released in about the same time frame, the "Operation: LIVEcrime"
boxed set featured a live "Operation: Mindcrime" CD and video
produced during the "Building Empires" tour, and a booklet with
tour photos and explanatory text.
There has been no mention of any other intended boxed set or
greatest hits release.
What are some rare Queensryche releases?
"Queensryche" (EP), 1983 release on 206 Records
This was Queensryche's original release. The EP was
later re-released by EMI, after they signed Queensryche.
"Kerrang! Metal Monsters" (video), 1985
This isn't a Queensryche release, really. However, it
includes the otherwise unavailable video for "Queen of
the Reich."
"Live in Tokyo" (video), 1984
This Sony video is fairly difficult to find, particularly
in the US. It has been out of print for some time.
"Operation: Empire" (boxed set), 1991
Only 1000 copies were produced, it is unknown whether
any are still available.
Who wrote "Gonna Get Close to You?"
Lisa Dal Bello, an avant-garde Canadian singer/songwriter,
wrote and recorded the song in the mid-1980s. Queensryche's
subsequent recording of the song, quite different from the
original, achieved slightly greater success than Dal Bello's.
Who have Queensryche performed with?
Just about everyone you could think of in the world of hard
rock and metal, when you get right down to it. Among them,
Zebra, Ozzy Osbourne, Ronnie James Dio, Metallica, Def Leppard,
AC/DC, Thunder, Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Black Crowes, Anthrax,
Megadeth, Quireboys, Motley Crue, Suicidal Tendencies, and
Warrior Soul.
What's this about lost video footage?
During the production of the video for 'Anybody Listening' off
"Empire," some of the film was misplaced for two weeks during
the time that it was supposed to be processed. It eventually
turned up in a film lab.
Who manages Queensryche?
Queensryche is managed by Q-Prime, in New York City. Publicity
is handled by the publicity department of their label, EMI,
also in New York City.
Where is a good list of bootlegs?
"New Metal Gods" - LP from Offenbach, October 1984

_I Will Remember_________________________________________History_
fsdpj@alaska.bitnet (Don) writes,
The Rocket, June 1990
"Operation: Big Time" by Jeff Gilbert
"The new album is quite a bit different; not anything
close to _Mindcrime_," reveals Geoff Tate of the enw Queensryche
record currently in production in Canada's Vancouver Studios.
_Empire_, the band's follow-up to the million-selling _Operation:
Mindcrime_, is slated for a late summer release, and promises to
be anything but predictable. "It's a completely different
direction," Tate hints. "As usual, we take the big left turn."
That "left turn" is what took _Mindcrime_ to the top of
the charts last year, leaving in its wake two hit singles, a
sell-out world tour, and a home video which also went platinum.
While the band is certainly aware of the pressure to follow-up
the most successful record of their career, Seattle's favorite
metal band isn't about to let a little thing like success stop
them. Even if it is a bit of a challenge.
"_Empire's_ been a lot more difficult for us to do
because we've always worked with themes. It gave us a sort of
'guideline' to go on. This record has no themes; each song is
different from the other one, lyrically and musically. So
there's no continuity to the album at all. It's very sporadic,
but it works!"
Tate also says that recording a Queensryche album is a
very intense experience (that we might have guessed). But like
all great artists, he believes that rock-n-roll, however
diposable, isn't just something you throw out.
"A record is a statement of where you're at, at the
time. You go out there and you owe it to yourself to do the
best you possibly can. It's there for life, and it can't be
changed. Listen to some records, and they sound better with
time. Yes's _90125_ was recorded in 1982, and it sounds
incredible today. It stands up. Other records don't."
Great. Now if someone would just tell that to the New
Kids on the Block.
_The Killing Words_________________________Babble Interpretation_
jwl@ais.org (Jessie) writes,
The sound clip from the beginning of Operation:
Mindcrime (I Remember Now) where the intercom is used calling
various doctors is used in many things, I have heard it in a
commertial for a hospital on a detroit radio station, and ..
I believe I heard it in Motley Crue's Dr. Feelgood.. and in
other various forms..
_Breaking the Silence__________________________None of the Above_
"Silence in Tennessee"
Music by Queensryche
Words by Shag
Hush now, don't you cry,
Willie Nelson really had to die,
And Johnny Cash is dead,
Now there's no steel guitars,
Playing in your head.
Your mind's determined to abstain,
From listening to Garth Brooks if it means your life.
So here you are, you've got a gun,
Wild-eyed you face the day,
The music's over... or has it just begun?
There's a place I like to hide,
I go to the Opry and slip inside.
And when the stars appear,
I slip a little arsenic into their beer.
Then I sit and watch them die,
Their throats they grasp, last words they gasp,
And then collapse on the stage.
Yes, Dolly Parton was a belle.
Killing her was rather fun,
She bounced once when she fell.
I - will be teaching this to you,
I - am gonna help you kill them to,
I - will help you learn to doit right,
I - will celebrate with you,
The silence in Tennessee.
If you bump off Clint Black for me,
And Tammy Wynette too, then you will see
That now that they're deceased,
Their records will no longer be released.
Killing country stars, you learn,
Decreases songs, be they short or long,
Of girls and guns and tears.
So please get Randy Travis too,
Just in case he thinks of maybe writing
Another one about trucks and beer, and...
I - will kill Slim Whitman with you,
I - am gonna help nuke Nashville too,
I - will kill Kenny Rogers right,
I - will kill them all with you...
