        _Screaming in Digital______________________________Editor's Note_

Heya, everyone. I'm still pretty backlogged as far as
finding summer sites for those who requested them goes,
unfortunately. On the bright side - from my point anyway - many
of you will not be losing net access over the summer.
Next week I hope to update the discography on the site
at Glia, and I'm also going to be putting some more work into the
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) list, and working on a general
(non-music-related) short survey so I can find out what type of
        people you all are.
In this digest - Groups that sound like Queensryche,
readers in bands, the further adventures of Doctor Davis, other
favorite groups, b-sides, lots of MTV-hating, and 'Scarborough
        Fair' airplay.

I just heard 'Scarborough Fair' on the radio! First time
I heard it. It is a marvelous rendition of the song, although
I'm not too "keen" on the song per se. We were forced to sing
this song like a million times in 4th grade, so I've grown to
hate it. But it does show off Geoff's talents well. It was
funny, we were having a mini-party on our deck, loud talking
and noise and all, radio on for background music, and as soon as
it began, I picked it out, and noted to my husband, also a big
Queensryche fan. He liked the song too.
It was on WZZO Z-95 of Allentown, PA. They play great
stuff, classic rock, lots of Queensryche. And they played
        'Scarborough Fair.' A pleasant surprise.

Where does the Queensryche symbol come from?
{It's just something they thought would look
                        neat, I believe.  -sh}

        Group 1 (Mystii, Christine) write,
I think someone may have said this already, but it seems
to me that Doctor Davis is quite a popular person (he must
really be a good doctor or something) as i have heard the "Doctor
Davis, telephone..." thing many a time in the hospital scenes on
many TV shows. I guess these shows need something going on in the
        background.
Watching the local TV channel recently, I saw a
commercial for some lawyers, medical malpractice, you know the
type, "have you been injured?." And they were showing a
hospital and you hear in the background the same "Dr. Hamilton,
Dr. Jay Hamilton." Obviously a readily available mix for local
law firm schmucks to use it!

        ak@matt.ksu.ksu.edu (Kendric) writes,
I'm in a local band called Carpet Burn. I'm a
percussionist. We play hard rock/heavy metal. We don't do any
Queensryche, we're not nearly that good. We have a lot of fun,
though we seem to be the Rodney Dangerfield of the area. Every
time we think we have a gig, it gets cancelled so we've really
only had about two gigs in the 8 months we've been together.

                        {It's a new band. I don't think it's like
                        Queensryche.  -sh}

I don't buy "Video: mindcrime" because I don't have the
spare cash, and taping off the TV is much easier.

        becker@acsu.buffalo.edu (Don) writes,
In England and Japan, they tend to release discs of
B-Sides when a band gets popular. Nirvana, Jane's Addiction, and
Marillion have all had B-sides discs put out outside the U.S. in
        the past 18 months.

        tdy3835@ritvax.isc.rit.edu (Tim) writes,
The closest thing to Queensryche I have listened to, the
only ones to even come _close_, is Helloween. In fact I had to
check the "Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 1" album to make sure
Jeff wasn't singing! Helloween is a great band if you love
        Queensryche.

        browning@symcom.math.uiuc.edu (Howard) writes,
As for Fates Warning, They have about 4 other albums out.
I borrowed 'No Exit' from a friend, and when I was playing it in
my room, my roommate said 'I see you got a new Queensryche tape.'
I showed him the case and he was dumbfounded. Fates Warning's
stuff sounds just like older Queensryche.

        jlee@weird.miami.fl.us (Jason) writes,
I got 'Anybody Listening' last night. Their rendition
of 'Scarborough Fair' is now one of my favorite Queensryche
        songs. It is excellent!

        _The Whisper__________________________________________Discussion_

        Group 2 (Paul, Tim) write,
I'm pretty varied in my musical likings. Favorite bands
of all time would be Queensryche, Rush, and Metallica, each for
different reasons. Other bands I like include older classic
bands like Zeppelin, Blue Oyster Cult, and Black Sabbath, newer
heavy bands like Motley Crue and Van Halen, and VERY new stuff
like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, Red Hot Chilis, and
much more. Then again, I have Indigo Girls, School of Fish, and
Jean Michel-Jarre (electronic synth maestro!) in the CD changer
right now. I like Rush because for a long time it seemed as if
they were writing about me, about MY life when each album came
out. I like Metallica because of their brash style, openness and
friendliness, and their unfailing consideration for their fans.
As for why I like Queensryche, I've always liked bands with talent
and intellectual depth - Queensryche has that in spades!
My other bands that I listen to regularly are Queen,
Iron Maiden, Metallica, Enya (surprise?), and Soundgarden.

        _Empire______________________________________________We Hate MTV_

Group 3 (Christine, TinyZ, Paul, Mystii, Jamie, Don) write,
They did away with MTV's most wanted? No wonder it was
never on when I put it on! Now just "hanging" garbage. I hate
MTV these days. I wonder why the hell there is no direct
competition? I heard that by 1997, MTV will be splitting into
different stations, one for dance/pop, one for metal/heavy, one
for rap, etc. Hope this is true, and hope my local cable
        carries them!
On the subject of MTV, Most Wanted _has_ been replaced
with Hangin' With MTV, but Hangin' also has requested videos.
MTV integrated Yo! MTV Raps, Most Wanted, Totally Pauly, and some
        other shows into Hangin'.
back when "Eyes of a Stranger" debuted I was one of many
Queensryche Fan Club members (#2498 here, looks like they've
grown quite a bit since then!) who called in to DIAL-MTV to vote
for the video. I got through many times. One particular
frenetic day, I got through sixteen times and voted for it; if
their 1,000-call total figure was the truth, that's about a
percent and a half all by my lonesome, and the video only placed
12th that day, so go figure. Are the calls "for real"? Sure,
people called in and were sometimes placed on the air (I was
taped a few times but as far as I know, I was never aired). But
the actual song placement on the list? Based on actual calls?
Highly unlikely! MTV probably used the calls as an impromptu
        music-listening survey -- after all, toll-free 800 lines cost
lots of money - so in a sense, every call WAS probably important.
i was quite miffed at the fact that MTV (i like the eMpTyV
idea) took the _most wanted_ thing off, but even before, i could
not get a hold of an operator over there - i even tried calling
once about 3 in the morning est, and the line was busy. perhaps
all the MTV Lines are kept busy on purpose, as i tried to call
_Rockline_ when Queensryche was on there, and i never got through
then,' perhaps it's all a conspiracy against viewers or something.
If you had a chance to listen to the Most Wanted on MTV,
you might remember that they say something like, "These videos
are compiled using viewers request, MTV polling, and other MTV
statistics." Well, the "other" in this case is MTV's rotation.
Thats why the new videos, the ones MTV over-plays and pushes on
the public, are always on the countdown. It's a powerful tool
they are playing with. The media has amazing control over people.
They play a video on Most Wanted and it sells, no matter who it
is, no matter what talent (or lack of). That's just my input on
        the MTV situation.
I've never been able to get through on Dial MTV / Most
Wanted either, although I got through once in 1987, and I
requested a Van Halen video. I'm pretty sure that the Dial MTV
stuff is fixed to a degree, anyways. That would _definitely_
explain why they played "Silent Lucidity" as opposed to a more
obscure song. I must admit that this attempt at getting an
obscure Queensryche video some airplay inspired me to try the
same for Marillion's "He Knows You Know" video. Too bad I'm not
        on their mailing list yet.

What exactly is the reference/allusion of 'The Needle'.
Is it referenced as far as just "Operation: mindcrime," or is
        there other significance?

        jjm13@pop.cwru.edu (Jeff) writes,
I submitted the words in Silent Lucidity both times. The
first one was written from memory and contained a few errors. The
second one was a definite reference with all the errors fixed and
the exact issue of the magazine cited.
