-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello again! This has been a rather slow week, in terms of things y'all have
sent in for inclusion, so this issue will be shorter than most of the ones
before it. In future issues, I'll probably be caching material that is sent
in, and limiting the amount that I put in any one issue, so that the supply of
material will not fluctuate as sharply as it has.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

J.P.O'Broin@durham.ac.uk writes,
"I was reading Kerrang [British heavy metal magazine] yesterday, and
it had an item in the news section on the LiveCrime album. Well, nothing new
there, but it did comment that the video would be released separately after
Christmas. I assume the same will be true in the States. Seems a good way to
get round the 'CD is nothing new' problem."
{I'd also heard that the CD would be available separately
after Christmas (they're only supposed to be available as a box
set until Christmas) but wasn't sure if the video would be
                released separately also. -sh}

cbcs2121@oswego.oswego.edu writes,
"I just finally got Livecrime, after digging up some cash. It's one
of the best live albums I've heard, of course that's a fairly biased statement
considering I love the band. There's been some criticism on the video lately,
and I can see where they're coming from, there is a lot of cutting in it. But
it's still very entertaining. And well done, I might add. Thumbs up to
Operation: Livecrime, the band did one hell of a job. Also, Tate said, "No,
not death by vibrating plastic toys," at the show in Syracuse, NY on November
4th." (Jamie)

brian@meaddata.com writes,
"Well, I just finished watching ... LiveCrime. The video is a nice
souvenir, but nothing to rave about. Specific gripes:
       - The "jerky motion" film technique bugs the hell out of me.
       - The mixing of shots from the three venues is annoying,
ESPECIALLY in "Suite Sister Mary" (Mary's there/she's gone/
           she's there/she's gone/...).
       - The presence of Mary onstage is distracting. The whole stage
show was designed for her to be absent (Geoff's "choreography"
with VideoMary was perfect at the shows I saw). And if they
decided to have her onstage (LiveMary), they should have ditched
VideoMary -- it's redundant. On top of all that, the audio
of her vocals (probably from only ONE show, unlike the composite
video images) was NOT live, but taped, giving the LiveMary the
appearance of lipsynching. (Don't know whether she actually sang
live at that particular show. Was anybody there?) All in all,
this piece was MUCH more effective with only VideoMary.
"The rest of the video is quite good, but "Suite Sister Mary" is, in
my opinion, the 'centerpiece' of Operation: Mindcrime, so I was pretty
disappointed to see it filmed that way. Bottom line: I'm glad I saw it, but
equally glad I didn't fork out $30-40 for the video, a redundant CD, and the
so-so libretto." (Brian)

David.Spencer@samba.acs.unc.edu writes,
"I don't have a high quality sound system, but every time I've listened
to LiveCrime, I thought he said 'show us how it's done' not 'suicide' (or
something to that effect) I listened to it again, and it just didn't sound like
'suicide' to me..." (Dave)

lewallen@uoftcse.cse.utoledo.edu writes,
"Am I correct in thinking the very first few seconds of Chemical Youth
is some one saying, "I cannot follow your thinking at times."? This is the
best that I can make out. Someone correct me if I am wrong." (James)

redavis@mailbox.syr.edu writes, regarding the Syracuse show,
"Overall, I thought the show was great. There were just a few things
that brought down the occasion. One was that the tickets were a birthday gift
from my wife (who is a country bumpkin from the middle of the bible belt), and
and she wanted to go (in spite of my warnings that the show was not going to
be very much like Randy Travis' :). Then I thought that maybe Queensryche
would change her mind! We even bought ear plugs so it wouldn't be too loud.
ear plugs so it wouldn't be too loud.
"Bzzzzt! Sorry, Thank you for playing.
"After all the comments about Warrior Soul, I thought that we would
show up late and miss them. Unfortunately, we didn't. No one had prepared me
for this. NO ONE! Absolutely the worst experience. Nothing like having
someone else's political views gruesomely shoved down your throat. (Gee, I
wonder if they've ever been invited to dinner at the White House?) By the
time they were done, *I* wanted to leave. The longest 40 minutes of my life.
Even that root canal, with the root all the way into my big toe, was more
enjoyable. My wife's comment was that they are so hateful (which is most
likely true), then she generalized and said that all this music is like that.
I replied 'yea, and all country music encourages cheating on / losing your
significant other.'
"Finally it was time for the big show. If I remember correctly, they
opened with 'Resistance', then 'Roads to Madness', 'Walk in the Shadows',
'Empire', and Mindcrime. Encore's were 'Last Time in Paris' and 'Silent
Lucidity'. Pretty standard. I enjoyed their show, and it was worth every
penny, especially after waiting so long to see them and not being able to get
to the other not-so-nearby shows (Buffalo and Binghamton). The sound quality
was great (although in my opinion it wouldn't have hurt to turn down the amps
a tad), the light, video, and performances were excellent.
"I left feeling satisfied, almost like, like, well nevermind. As for
my wife, well, she wasn't converted like I had hoped, maybe (just maybe) some
tolerance is all I'll get." (Bob)

Now is the time to start lobbying MTV to add a new category to their
annual Video Music awards. Despite the fact that Queensryche gets much less
airplay than most other bands, they still took the Viewer's Choice Award in
1991. After much research, I've determined that Queensryche is getting
_subliminal_ airplay - the guitar solos are used as background music for Kurt
Loder's every move. Therefore, we must persuade MTV to add the "Best Band
that Kurt uses as Background Music" category to the awards in 1992 - it should
be an easy win for the group.

There have been a few questions about connecting to the FTP site. If
your machine supports FTP, you can connect to the site by the command
'ftp glia.biostr.washington.edu' then log in using either 'anonymous' or 'ftp'
as your username, and your email address as the password. To get to the
Queensryche area, use the command 'cd /pub/queensryche' and then 'cd' in and
out of the subdirectories. To get a file use 'get file', and to send a file
to the incoming area from your account, use 'put file'.

beast%maple.decnet@pine.circa.ufl.edu writes,
"Well, I have checked out the archive at glia.biostr.washington.edu,
and the lyrics section is hardly complete. More importantly, the lyrics to
Operation: Mindcrime are not all there. I'd like to ask anyone who has the
lyrics on disk or the time to type them in to fill in any missing links (check
it out to see which ones you can do) and upload them to incoming. I would like
a complete lyrics file there. Thank you." (Jeremy)
{I'd hoped to finish typing everything in before the site
opened, but ran out of time. I have a long weekend this week,
and if nobody else comes up with some of the songs, I'll try
                to get them in there myself.}

===============================================================================

Well, that's the end of this one. Hopefully the next one will be back up a
little closer to the 10-20k size I prefer to run at. Oh, and yes, you can help
make this a better digest - if you see them on tour, send a writeup of the show
and it _will_ get published... similarly, if you have anything that might fit
in any of the other categories, send it in, I'll be sure to include it.

                                Happy Thanksgiving,
                                                        -shag
