Screaming in Digital (Editor's Note)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, here we are again. Now that Livecrime's "old news" this will be
a little more diverse. The big news from my corner this week is the official
opening of the Screaming in Digital archive/resource FTP site. There've been
several contributions of various sorts also, so this issue isn't all my own
ranting.
Discussion of the group (thanks to someone with a rather limited
vocabulary) on Alt.Rock-n-Roll.Metal has increased. I hope that won't equate
to a decrease of traffic in this digest, though leveling off at a size between
10 and 20k per issue is probably an eventuality (and one I don't mind, the
last issue was a bit big!)

Neue Regel (What's new)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This week - more reader responses and reviews of "Operation: Livecrime"
ju@phakt.usc.edu writes,
"I agree with everyone that this set is great, both the CD and video,
but the libretto really bothers me. The reformatted lyrics were great but the
outlined story really kills the imagination... no room for interpretation. I
think the band made up the outline after MTV sponsored a contest a couple of
years ago (2 years ago I believe) called something like "Who Killed Sister
Mary?" in which fans submit their own interpretation of the story. Geoff and
company probably took what they thought was the best parts from the best
entries and "compiled" a storyline out of all the pieces... (Edward)
scam@lims01.lerc.nasa.gov writes,
"This is my review of the new QR package, Operation: Livecrime. I am a
new fan of QR and I think it allows me to be very objective. I'll just put
this in bullet form.
o Video is much too trendy, "glammy" and MTV-ish. QR used to be a band
with a metal type attitude. The video production is overdone.
o The live sound is great, too great. Many samples are used throughout.
The vocals sound too good and the guitars as well. I prefer a true
live recording. This has been significantly doctored. I don't like the fact that the music is "sync-ed" to the video. At one point, you can
see Rockenfield smacking away at his skins, and it does'nt match the
music. I'd love to know exactly how "live" the audio is.
o Overall, I think this a nice collectors item. I prefer the Studio
version better. The new package is too "hot", as evidenced on my
VCR's level meters and on my cassette deck.
o Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy QR but am picky about live stuff."
usr1118a@tso.uc.edu writes,
"I purchased my copy of "Operation: LIVEcrime" on Nov 5th also ($39.99)
and I love it! Well worth every cent! The video sure did bring back memories
from the June 4th concert in Dayton, Ohio... that was really neat seeing "Mary"
there live singing her part! I would go see Queensryche millions of times if
I could. In fact, I'm seeing the "Building Empires" tour again Wednesday
night here in Cincinnati. Can't wait, they put on one stupendous show!" (Jim)
jbuckey@wilkes1.wilkes.edu writes,
"I got Operation : LIVEcrime yesterday. It's not bad, but it isn't as
good as I had hoped. I wanted to hear for myself if Geoff Tate's voice live is
is as DEMONIC as it is in the studio. Geoff hardly shreiked through the
entire show. Geoff also talks, instead of sings, through some parts. The
drums, however, were great. Scott Rockenfield is probably the most energetic
drummer today. Guitar work was good, too. DeGarmo, Wilton, and Jackson kicked
*ss on the album. But Tate wasn't as energetic as he should have been,
although I did like it when he screamed 'MORE???' on "The Needle Lies." That
was cool. This is not to put down Tate's singing. I am amazed at his range.
Circus magazine labeled Tate's voice as 'still the best in the business." All
in all, I grade "Operation: LIVEcrime" a B." (Joel)
lapoinml@uwec.bitnet writes,
"I was lucky enough to see them at the Rosemont horizon with a friend
about a week before the shooting of the video. Although I think his voice
sounded a little better when we went to see them, I think the video did a great
job of portraying what the concert was actually like. The book that comes with
it was great, because even though I knew the story, I didn't know all of the
background on Nikki, and Mary. It helped fill in some of the gaps. I don't
think the CD is as close to the original albumn as many people have said. Of
course it is close, because it is a Rock-Opera, but there is a lot of voice
fluctuation, and improvosation in the instrumentation. I like that, because it
makes it feel like you are at the concert.
"I live in Wisconsin, and I was wondering just out of curiosity, why
did they choose to film it here? Is it because Wisconsin just has the best
fans?" (Mike)
{Well, you don't riot like St. Louis G'n'R fans... -sh}
sv0o+@andrew.cmu.edu writes,
"The Box Set: Ripoff, my hairy butt! I love it and I think the price
was reasonable. Some clueless moron put an extra copy of Libretto in mine. I
only opened it once to see if it was the same as the other copy. I'm willing
to trade the extra for a concert program (which I didn't notice at the show I
saw). Anyone interested?" (Sean)
{um, the Ryche-fan butt hair survey was _last_ issue. -sh}

Speak (Reader Letters)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
kielb@ecn.purdue.edu writes,
"Is anybody else listening carefully enough to catch the extra line at
the end of Revolution Calling`s second verse on LIVECrime? It is me, or does
Geoff sing, "Gotta make a change, gotta push, push it on through.... with,
suicide"? It's a little hard to hear but I would bet my life on it." (Eric)
{believe it or not, it does sound like "We gotta make a change,
yeah, with... suicide." I checked both the video and the CD.
On the video it's at about 580 on the counter, unfortunately,
Geoff's in a 'huddle' and you can't see his mouth move. On the
CD, it's at 3:05-3:07 on song 3. -sh}
ewk102@psuvm.psu.edu writes,
"I was wondering, is The Warning a concept album, also? I know Rage
and Empire, as well as the EP, are not, although they may have a similar theme
throughout each particular album, but Warning seems to be conceptual - is it?
If it is, what is the concept?"
padden@latcs1.lat.oz.au writes,
"What are the videos off "Empire" like? As far as I know, no
Queensryche video has ever graced Australian airwaves, except for one late
night playing of Silent Lucidity (I missed it) and their performance on some
awards show of Silent Lucidity with orchestra (I saw it)." (Liam)
ktucker@gmuvax.bitnet writes,
"I want to know if anyone knows what Geoff mumbles in Roads To Madness.
It starts out ...Believe Me, my conscious..... and then I can't make out the
rest. Seeing it live didn't help either." (K.Tucker)
usr1118a@tso.uc.edu writes,
"Does anyone know why at the end of "Eyes Of A Stranger" in the concert
they don't finish with the 'I remember now'?" (Jim)
jbuckey@wilkes1.wilkes.edu writes,
"Anybody got the lyrics for 'The Warning'? The CD version that I bought
didn't have the lyrics on it, so now I have to guess what Geoff is singing.
'The Warning' is a very cool album, and I just gotta have the words for the
songs." (Joel)
{The lyrics are in the "Screaming in Digital" FTP site. -sh}
sv0o+@andrew.cmu.edu writes,
"Empire: If I had any musical talent at all and became even remotely
famous for it, I would want not want to be known for playing music that all
sounds the same. On the contrary, I would try to exhibit some variety. I
think that "Empire" is Queensryche's attempt to show the world more variety.
The sound is original, the lyrics are original, and best of all, it's good
listening. To the 12-year old girls at the Johnstown show, There's more to
Queensryche than "Silent Lucidity." To the die-hard Queensryche fans who
don't like Empire, Don't listen to Empire, especially "Silent Lucidity." (Sean)

Roads to Madness (Touring Info)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ktucker@gmuvax.bitnet writes,
"I saw the show that cfulkers@bbn was referring to at the Capital
Centre, where Queensryche was an opening band. Don't worry, they weren't booed
off the stage but in fact were cheered and applauded immensely. (The headlining
band was Metallica in case you were wondering.)" (K.Tucker)
mckinzie@math.wisc.edu writes,
"I've seen 'Ryche in concert twice. In 1982, opening for Ronnie Dio,
they were called back for *two* encores (in San Jose, CA. BTW, I have a tape
of excerpts of this show...) In 1985, opening for AC/DC in San Francisco,
they were booed on occasion ("Gonna Get Close to You", e.g.), but did get a
good crowd response for the older material (esp. "The Lady Wore Black" and
"Queen of the Reich", both of which had gotten tons of radio airplay in the
Bay Area back in 1982-83.
"Haven't seen them since. I've promised myself I will not go to
another arena show. So unless they decide to do a club date sometime, I
guess I'm SOL." (Mark)
saber@gnu.ai.mit.edu writes,
"I saw the Building Empires tour in Pittsburgh (June 5) and Baltimore
(November 7). The show was great. Queensryche is the best group I have
*ever* seen in concert (and I have seen quite a few). Listening to the music
on tape or CD is no substitute for seeing in concert. The music actually
sounds better, in my opinion, in concert. Most groups don't sound as good in
concert because there aren't a million filters for them to go through... But
Queensryche puts on a *wonderful* show." (Saber)
lmeilstrup@albion.bitnet writes,
"I heard a while back one of my friends talking about some recent
concerts happening on back-to-back weekends (Queensryche and Metallica) and
they told me when they first saw Queensryche, they were opening for Metallica.
Whether or not it was "Operation: Mindcrime" I'm not sure." (Louise)
sv0o+@andrew.cmu.edu writes,
"Nov 11, 1991: Johnstown War Memorial.
"Now this place is tiny. (You can pick out your friends' faces across
the thing.) It's in the boonies, so they didn't even sell out. Best of all,
it's General Admission (Moshing permitted, but only necessary for the toked-
up goofs 15 feet to the right of me).
"Warrior Soul was absolutely pathetic. My friends and I entertained
ourselves by screaming "you suck" during pauses in the songs.
"Queensryche opened up with Resistance and continued with what was the
ordinary set according to my friends. 'Roads to Madness' and 'Walk in the
Shadows' sprouted out of the "Empire" set like giant redwoods in a poppy field.
I couldn't enjoy this part of the show fully because I was so anxious to see
Mindcrime. I did like the cool background projections, though, and Geoff's
Geoff's voice was in prime condition. When Mindcrime began, the crowd
spazzed. I spazzed. The goofs spazzed and spazzed. I think one of the
roadies spazzed, too, because the left side projector went out and stayed out
until 'The Needle Lies.' But that didn't bring down the guys or the crowd.
Before 'Needle', Geoff did his little dialog about the non-followers being
confused and this being Operation: Mindcrime. He also asked, "Does anyone
here know what happened to Mary?" I heard several educated fans yell
"Suicide" and then Geoff knelt down to listen to one fan's answer. He stood
and said "Death by vibrating plastic toys? I don't think so!"
"Then they continued with both projectors working. Random spazzing,
Guitar pick throwing, Geoff was impossible to follow around the stage. Encore:
'Last Time in Paris' and 'Silent Lucidity' (major teeny-bopper spazzing.) All
in all, I'd say it was the best show I've ever seen. If you have the chance
to see them before they end this tour, Just Do It." (Sean)
{at the Philadelphia show in July, the 'Geoff Quote' for how
Mary died was "No, her skin was not ripped off by weasels!"
if everyone who's seen {and remembers} the tour mails me what
he said at each show, I'll post a compilation next issue. -sh}
