Subject: trivial stuff...

hello all,

now, i must be one of THE biggest RUSH fans around. seen them
19 times everywhere from Springfield, MA to Philly. my friends
all love RUSH as well, but they're not as obsessed as i am.
BUT, i am NOT obsessed to the point that i need to know what the
members are thinking when they make faces at each other during a show
or on a video. I mean sometimes I go a month without listening to
RUSH (unless they're on the radio). then when I do put a disc on,
it's just, sorry, it's just a rush! anyway, didn't anyone ever hear
of inside jokes? or just spur of the moment gestures to make a friend laugh?
i'm sure everyone out there has certain inside jokes and expressions amongst
friends. well, after 20 years of playing together and being close friends,
and being the jokesters they are, don't you think they should have their
own littles jokes? that keeps them going and it keeps the shows fresh. just
like in ASOH, at the end of Overture, Alex messed with Geddy's timing. come
on, does anyone want to know what Alex was thinking then? it's pretty obvious,
he wanted to screw with his buddy. there's also a moment in either ASOH
or ESL where Geddy and Alex are talking to each other and one laughs. so
what?! they're having fun!! that's what it's all about. (well, that and the
hokey pokey).

please, no flames. it's just that some of these things are super trivial
and for the most part, can't be answered anyway. just like that Trees thread a
while ago trying to figure out what Neil was thinking when he wrote it.
forget it. take the song for what it's worth and enjoy it. he said it didn't
mean anything at the time, so that's it. it's summer. get outside. go to the
beach.
lighten up and enjoy the music.

well, so long...

Ohmigawd!

Was down in Houston for 4th of July weekend, went to Blockbuster to rent
a movie, and lo and behold they have Exit Stage Left for rent!

What a truly wonderfull concert video - all their early hits, great
intros by the band, a bunch more in-depth than A Show of Hands video
was.

Too bad they don't produce it anymore! If ya'll can rent it, do it,
I highly recommend it - I'm still pumped 2 days after the fact!

Subject: Check out the cheesy chart!

After browsing back and forth through the tour-dates list and using my
appendages to work out a few figures, I figured I might just as well
collect 'em and share 'em all. (Big f-ing whoop.)

Accurate? Consider the number of potential errors and omissions in the
tour-dates list, in my interpretation of the list, truncating errors (most
months contain more than one day), errors in my arithmetic, errors in my
typing, and the cataracts in your rheumy eyes. "Nope."

Fun to look at? Like one of them hologram stickers. You look at it from
one angle, you get happy. From another, you get sad. "You betcha."

Incidentally, People With Whom I Am Trading - I'm getting to it. Making
trades while preparing to move cross-country - a bright idea, only from
the mind of... me.

The copy of Hemispheres that you own is considered
valuable, but not exactly rare. I own a few copies, and have seen them
everywhere from local record shops to advertisers in Goldmine to local record
shows and swap meets. Keep your copy and don't sell it. Someday when Rush
makes the Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame, you can proudly say that you own
a unique piece of Rush history. As for collectable value, if it means
something to you, then it's worth something. As far as
market price, expect to see them at around $40-$50
depending on where you live, condition, etc. A rough guess says that perhaps
several thousand were produced, but probably less than 50,000 at best guess.

regarding:

>I have a copy of "EVERYTHING YOUR LISTENERS EVER WANTED >TO HEAR BY
RUSH...BUT YOU WERE AFRAID TO PLAY."

Jackpot City with this one! I'd say, as a collector, that there
are probably close to 5,000 copies of this particular
collection left today. In mint condition, a $150-175 price tag
would not be unreasonable.

regarding:

>I also have a compilation album titled, "RUSH THROUGH TIME."

Yup, it's Dutch. It's also pretty rare (I have a cassette vers).
Anyway, in mint shape (cover/wax) expect a good price to be
around $200-225. Be advised, this is not a bootleg! This is
a legitimate import release. It also makes for a fine collection of Rush
songs.

[ Also keep in mind that there are *TWO* versions of this -- a picture
disc, priced about what you mentioned above, and a standard album, worth
     around the $40 price range. : rush-mgr ]

regarding:

>Also, I have another compilation album titled "RUSH >ANTHOLOGY."

Four Words: Open A Record Shop. With this alone, you could
probably make a down payment on that nice little Jet Ski
you've wanted for so long. In mint shape, I'd say that at least
$300 would be a fair asking price. Because it's so rare, expect
a collector to be willing to shell out some cash. You could probably ask
around $500 for it, and still have a line around the block.

With the collection you have, I'd seriously consider telling serious Rush
collectors to transfer to U of Rochester. I only hope my college years can
net such a nice collection
(wait, they already have...)

Greetings all.
I just had a goofy Rush "hearing." I was listening to WGRD in Grand Rapids,
MI. They simulcast Kevin Matthews on the LOOP in Chicago. Anyway, they broke
away for local news and they were giving an update on Lalapalooza (sp?).
Hole seems to be the highlight of this tour. And at the end of their set
Courtney Love mentioned Rush. Anybody else hear this? Anybody at the concert
that this happened?

Subject: Alex's album, neverending questions!!

Hey guys:

I too have had enough of the NP debate, and since I contributed to some of it I
feel it's my duty to try to shift our focus in another direction.

About Alex's solo project:

I think it's great he's doing this and I can't wait to hear it, especially the
tracks that Sebastian Bach sings on. However, I've got the feeling lately that
Alex is doing this solo album because he may feel a bit frustrated with Rush's
last three or maybe even four albums. He's never admitted to this publicly, but
he has said repeatedly that he feels "there is more room for the guitar" in
Rush's music. It seems to me, his role in the band may have taken a back seat
to Neil and Geddy. I read an online interview recently where he put some of the
blame on himself by saying he "needed to work harder." He also has said he
prefers performing the older material live where Neil prefers the newer stuff.
If you look at Rush's most recent albums, Counterparts is the first time the
guitar has been "up front" since MP and I loved every song on that album. What
do all you Rush maniacs think about this out there in Rivendell land?? If
anyone's interested in receiving those comments from Alex, I'd be happy to
locate them and email it to you.

Also, does anyone know what the hell Alex is saying during the early part of
La Villa on the ASOH video? It's censored and this has been driving me and my
friends crazy for years now. LET ME KNOW!!

Subject: Putting the Neil Debate to Rest

Yes, it was me that started this who's better than who debate
concerning NP. I don't apologize - I am a professional musician, etc.
and I agree in the grand scheme of things its what you like not what is
always technically best. BUT, in my dealings with other professional
musicians I've been shocked at how little respect NP get. Everyone
always seems to imply that they think NP is good but the fact that
many of us (we, Rush fans) never admit anyone could be as good that many
resent him. So, my ulterior motive was to suggest other drummers that
are indeed deserving of respect so that in the end NP can get the respect
he deserves as one of the best _rock_ drummers of all time.
My other motive was for the sake of music as an art form. I
contend that there is an objective way to judge the quality of any
artist (musician). (Yes, Neil turned me on to Ayn Rand way back) Unlike
Rand, I
don't maintain that everyone must like what is objectively best - no,
instead I think that people should like what they like.
	 - BUT allow me as an artist to rant and rave about the objective
relationship of ability levels. I feel the need to do this because I
understand what it means to slave
over something - to do nothing else but try to learn as much as possible,
etc. As an artist, I have developed an incredible respect for the
level of dedication that it takes to be as technically as superb as
the BEST. This is why I appreciate Neil (as an artist) more than some
grunge drummer just thrashing about. At the same time, this is why I
appreciate the Weckl's, etc. on some levels a bit more than NP. Because they
have spent every minute of their existence learning different styles,
practicing, gigging - they haven't lived the well rounded life of Neil -
touring through China and Africa on bike, etc.. They have sacrificed a
normal existence for the sake of the art that is music. You may think
what they play is crap - its your right as a listener.
To me, what they have done is what NP describes in "Mission".
They have that "obssessive drive", they have more than the dreams of
being great they have done it.
Anyone who cares to argue the technical points of my arguments -
the musical jargon- lets continue this off the NMS. E-mail me direct.

Well, this is but my second post, but I really love reading all the stuff in
this letter. I just have a few topics that I want to chat about...

First, I asked about the Live song Waterboy. Yes, I agree with most people
that the drumming AND the bass line sound like a song off GUP. I had thought
that they were from The Body Electric, but someone else said Kid Gloves.
Anyway, Live drumming is pretty good compared to most of the drumming around
today. Does anyone know if there are any references by the band Live to a
Rush influence?? I am from the area where Live is from and it seems like we
get less info about the band that other areas.

[ Rush has never been cited as an influence by Live as far as I know.
                                                               : rush-mgr ]

Secondly, Neil is by far the best drummer ever. As for someone knocking his
time, I have seen Rush live four times and I have never heard a problem with
his drumming (except for a slight problem with Double Agent at the Philly
concert, but I have determined that that was one of the first times they
played it live because my roommate saw them two weeks begfore and they didn't
play it at that concert). Anyway, Neil will forever be the greatest drummer
alive to me because of his complexity and diversity of influences used in his
drumming. Also, he is one of the most brilliant and well-read men I have ever
eard about.

Lastly, Rush was almost non-existant in my high school. My fiance has liked
them longer than I have and he was forever made fun of for liking them. He
got me hooked almost right away, and it was to an instrumental that I first
listened. Speaking of instrumentals, I have heard Rush instrumentals
everywhere. On Entertainment Tonight, between innings of baseballs games (The
Atlanta/Philly game had Where's My Thing played for about 4 innings worth!!!!
TBS loves using Rush between innings)

Anyway, enough babbling for now. Keep up all the Rush info coming my way.
Love it.

>> philosophy in his lyrics.

Careful, "never" is a really long time! Did you forget "Tai Shan"
from Hold Your Fire. There are others that could be pointed out, too,
but this is the most obvious example of "eastern" thought creeping
into Neil's writing. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, this song was
inspired by Neil's trip to China.

    [ And perhaps "Territories"? : rush-mgr ]

>> This is a disgusting overgeneralization, which only serves the

Oh, come on! In everyday parlance, we typically use the term "eastern
civilization" to refer to the East Asian societies which, for the most
part, are grew out of Chinese Confusionism. Dan did refer to Buddha
and Lao Tzu, so his intent should be obvious. Had he intended
reference to "Middle Eastern" civilization, he would have said so,
because we use that term in everyday parlance as well. You could also
argue that Hinduism and other religions and philosophies from the
Indian sub-continent fall under the label, "eastern civilization," but
it's not a "disgusting overgeneralization" unless you are easily
offended.

I have had a chance to travel a bit to South East Asia, and will be
spending a lot of time in Korea over the next few years. Although my
main purpose over there is work, I try to expose myself as much as
possible to the local societies, and I really can see some influence
of "eastern civilization" in some of Neil's lyrics since about Power
Windows. From what I've read, it seems that Neil has traveled A LOT,
so it shouldn't be surprising to hear influences from nearly every
continent in his rhythms and his lyrics.

Ok, so I guess somebodies can say "We told you so", but I made the mistake of
thinking that VH1 would play some/one Rush video. This 4th of July weekend they
had an A to Z playing of videos, no repeats. The first day I caught an hour or
so as a sampling. Based on this sample I believed that they would have to play
some Rush since they were including REAL oldies, ie- ABBA, one-hit-wonders, ie-
*nothing comes to mind right now*, and oddities, ie- A Flight Of Seagulls. I
mistakenly figured, "Rush is not old, odd or a one-hit-wonder". But they
skipped right over them!! The did SIX videos from Amy Grant!! BUT NO RUSH!!

Sorry for shouting. This was, put lightly, an injustice. I mean, I knew of
the popular media's apathy for Rush, but I thought that this was taking it too
far. Any one else think this way? I was angry enough to *consider* emailing
them in complaint, but then I said to **** with them. Let them continue to be
mindless vegetables.

[ Ah, glad I didn't stay up to see if they did play Rush (they were on
The Police when I stopped by their channel). : rush-mgr ]

  Anyway. Thanks for listening.

Awright, guys. Here's a suggestion. Lets NOT compare any Rush
members to anyone else. Let's not flame people for saying this band or that
group is Rush-like (beauty is in the eye...). And, above all, PLEEEEEZE!!!!!
let's not insult anyone else because so-and-so has a different opinion than
mine. I think I speak for the rest of us that this only serves to annoy us

who's opinion is more right. This is a group for Rush. We talk about Rush.
We trade info, stories, sightings, etc. on Rush. Let's do that.

Speaking of Rush >:-), I've been a bit confused by this ever since I
read it in a mini-biography of Rush, and I'm hoping it wasn't asked a
million times already. Neal wrote (for the Signals tour, I believe) that
they had gone into the studio to RErecord 2112. Did I read this wrong? Or
are there actually 2 versions of 2112? I didn't see it in the FAQ, so I hope
this hasn't been asked too many times. Thanks in advance.

Uhm, unless I'm thinking of the wrong video, the letters are NSF.

There was indeed plenty of debate on this in the past (it isn't in the FAQ?)
and the majority seemed to go along with "Non Sufficient Funds" - like when
you bounce a check. You might say this is the opposite of "Big Money".

Speaking of the GUP tour video, anyone know where to find it? I know it is

Fellow Rush-a-holics:

If I make any posting "mistakes", plz forgive me, this is my first
post.
In the past few issues of TNMS, people have been comparing Neil to
other percussionists. I don't see what purpose this serves. If you swapped
Neil Peart for Buddy Rich or Dave Weckl, (perish the thought) you would have
three extremely talented musicians who would not have the same "synergy" (for
lack of a better term) that they have with Neil. Each musician contributes
his or her own personal "thing" to each band, and if you removed one piece of
that band, it just isn't the same. Yeah, I know, that sounds hokey and I am
probably not making any friends, so I'll shut up now. Sorry if it sounded
soap-boxey, that was not my intention.

I've heard the same thing. Not many armchair drummers realize just how
difficult it is to keep a steady tempo over a stretch of 5 or 6 minutes.
I've also heard how Peart overcomes this, and why Rush sounds so damn tight
on studio albums. Geddy and Alex will record each song without the drum
track -- they'll use a metronome to keep steady time. Then Peart can play
drums over the bass, guitar, and keyboard tracks. This way, he stays
perfectly in time.

Now, when Rush heads for the stage, they obviously don't have the advantage
of a third-party timekeeper. On some tracks on ESL, for example, you can
hear Peart lose a few beats per second in between verses, bridges, and
refrains. This is quite normal for the playing environment they're in. I've
been a musician for years, and keeping time in long performances can be
nerve-racking. The small size of Rush is a big help -- it gets harder to
play tight as you add more members. Ask any performer this!

Anyway, Peart isn't perfect. I give him credit for just coming up with his
unique progressive style. Slight time-lagging or -rushing isn't uncommon,
even at his level.

Just listen to it and appreciate it, okay? :)

Did *anyone* watch the 1993 World Series?!?! In between a ton of the
innings, CBS (I think it was CBS) played "Leave That Thing Alone." I'm
surprised I haven't seen anyone mention that yet! I mean, the World Series
is one of the biggest TV sporting events in the world. Only the Super Bowl
and the World Cup get more viewing audience.

Oh...and I also heard "Mystic Rhythms" played multiple times as the

Subject: Geddy synths

Hello RUSH fans, greetings from Mexico City.
In the old days of RUSH (Terry Brown producing), analog synths were kings.
At that time, everyone who used a synthesizer in a record han no shame,
problem or any concern about mentioning brand and model in the records.
Thanks to that, we know Geddy did a extensive use of Moogs and Oberheims.
When digital synths arrived, not only Geddy bot everyone stopped to mention
that data in the credits of albums.

In ASOH, the synths appear shadowed and it's impossible to know what synts
Geddy is playing, it's obvious that has a Minimoog over the keys at his left.
at the bottom right it looks like a DX-7, and the sound in _Closer to the
heart_ and in many songs from _Grace under preassure_ a lot of sounds has the
distinctive pure sound of FM.

Does anyone have some info about the synths Geddy uses in studio? (when
playing live, I think he uses pretty much the same gear that he did in studio)
The main concern is as I told in the post-Brown era.

Thanks for any help!

Subject: IF YOU ARE ANY RUSH FAN, READ!!

Let me start by saying that I did not write this. I am just passing it on. Do
not flame me.

------If RUSH were a new band, writers would be falling all over themselves
to come
up with a label for the trio's decidedly unhip music--prenuptual.
post-prandial, prenatal, post-punk, electro-moosehead rock---or something of
that nature.

But since the group is 20 years old this year, let's just make it simple.
They're dull, boring, pretentious and about as interesting as watchig the
freeway clog up at rush hour. But not as colorful.

In a concert earlier this year at the Forum, RUSH coaxed its thousands of
fans from the dark, moist places where they keep themselves during the day.
Judging by the sheepish looks as lighters were held semi-proudly aloft, to be
a RUSH fan is appearently a secret that can't always be shared with friends
and family.

Why is RUSH so popular? Maybe people get confused with the Rush named
Limbaugh and buy the trio's records to support the way things ought to be.
Or possibly, it's because the music by the Canadian band (funny, they don't
look Canadian) harks back to more innocent times, when bombastic drum solos,
meaningless time signature changes and pseudo-poetic lyrics meant something
somewhere.

Whatever the reason, the group's current "COUNTERPARTS" alblum slipped to the
No. 2 spot on the national alblum charts upon its release last fall. OK, OK,
somebody out there is listening.

In the two-hour appearence, RUSH gave three generation of stoners a
smattering of hits, lots of meandering solos and some new material. Compared
with most arena-rock productions, though, the RUSH show was downright plain,
relying on videotape and the occasional flashpot.

The band---guitarist ALEX LIFESON, bassist-vocalist GEDDY LEE and drummer
NEIL PEART-----played with precision, we supose.

But LEE'S histronic, high-pitched vocals are definitely an acquired taste,
the sort of noise that could make Michael Bolton take a really good look at
himself.

Ultimately, the RUSHIANS may be getting a little long in tooth for all this
rock 'n' roll nonsense. At one point, Lifeson attempted the sort of sprint
accross the stage that used to drive the Who fans wild. It came out like a
waddle.

This came from a newspaper article in the LA Daily News, I did not write it.
No flames please. Respond E-Mail----DCaldw@aol.com

Science fiction and action films, yes. IMAX, no way. Unless you're
planning to shoot this thing in IMAX, you can forget about
transferring it from even 35mm film to IMAX (nevermind 16mm or tape).
The physical size between IMAX and 35mm films is just too great (about
10 times). Imagine 10 times the graininess. I once saw a segment of
'The Ten Commandments' transferred to IMAX from the 35mm negative. The
quality was so bad, I couldn't easily tell what I was watching much of
     the time.

I'm not sure you're going to want to shoot in IMAX either. The cost
for film stock alone is about $1 a *second* and I don't think that
includes even developing, nevermind equipment and personnel.

Howdi Sean!

Great thinking about the movie. I would just like to give some ideas about
that "afterboom-section."

The bells could be illustrated as the explosion disturbing the gravity-net
that some astronomers believe are around us and are measuring.
Maybe a wirenet shaking as the bells go.

Between the bells there are some percussion-echoes, these could be shown as
pieces of the formerly star hitting other objects, planets, stars etc.

The later part of that kind of moody, steady rock-beat just before the lyric
enters could be the showing of the black hole starting to eat. When it begins
to regain it's earlier posessions.
Kind of goes with the music i think.

And as the camera that's viewing the black hole, itself isn't caught by
the gravity, couldn't Sony STEADYcam do some sponsoring =)

I was driving home from work on Thursday when CTTH
came on the radio. Cool, I've heard that song thousands
of times, but I hadn't heard it in a while so it sounded
almost "fresh". The song starts and I, of course, start

Neil. I thought. "hhmmmmm... wait a minute. Why did

almost as though he were continuing a previous

It's not as if they don't sell enough tickets -- they can't play
enough shows to get to all the fans who want to see them.
What you're asking is that they put in a lot of extra effort
to encourage people to go to multiple shows so that *less*
people get to see them. Are they really going to want to do this?
