Ok, I've finally started putting up the CD bootleg guide on the web page.
Check it out, let me know what you think (feedback, I need feedback!),
how useful it is, etc.

Does anyone have some CD boots that they'd feel like loaning me for a week?
I can't review what I don't have... let me know! I'm also looking for a map
(from the phone book, venue, whatever) of Maple Leaf Gardens (and some pictures
of it and Toronto itself) -- if you've got some and feel generous drop me a
line (you would get everything back of course).

Just thought I'd drop a line and let everyone know that on Wednesday nights
from 8-10 pm on 91.1 WLFM, a friend and I are doing a progressive rock show.
It's based out of Appleton, WI and I've heard that some nights it can carry
pretty much throughout the whole state. Just last night we tried doing a
whole hour of Rush, and we actually started getting lots of calls. From
now on we'll be doing only Rush from 9-10, and other good progressive stuff
from 8-9. Give us a listen and a call.

First a small comment, may i remind most of you that a little bit of
research on your part would save us all from repetitive Questions. In all
most all cases, the answers to most of the questions asked are located in
the (rash) home page. (and lots more stuff, hey it's good readin!) please,
no offense, just read before you type. Second, I must say i do enjoy
receiving updates as to what alex is up to, ie...solo album?? AS far as
being under rated? of course he is under rated, he very rarely does more
than play guitar. not that is'nt enough, i love the guy like a brother i
never had, or never new about, or never thought i would see on stage with
one of the most incredible rythm sections known to progresive rock. in any
case, point being, he let himself just be a guitarist, he has got to be
able to sing, he is oviously not tone def. that must be good for
something, much more than just saying SUBDIVIONS. Alex's parts have
always been some of the most technical, diverse, astranged and simply
put, "great" licks to have ever been put to vinyl. Third, by e-mailing
myself you will find a very cool list of rush collectables! items include
"The" Giant poster which has shots from hemispheres on it, also shots from
FTK. various live videos, one has rush in the 70' on don kirshners ROCK
CONCERT. live bootlegs from aslo NORWAY, where i first heard all of
hemispheres "live'. pretty hot stuff. We do love idolize dont we! oh
well, time is a precious comodity, and mine has become short. -A Word

  Sean,
That's the first time I've heard that Neil was
a pretty good drummer... Anyway, I originally got into
the boys because of Neil. My brother too was a drummer
and I thought he was great, but what did I know, I was
14 yrs old. One night I was watching MTV back in 1983
and saw a video with this drummer that was like none I
have ever heard or seen. I ran up stairs and woke my
brother, "Rob, Rob, get up, you have to see this guy".
We ran back down stairs and my brother said, "Oh, that's
Neil Peart, he's great!". From that day on I became
the most loyal RUSH fan known in my town, school, state
maybe?? With that said, back to The Best of Neil.
I had a lot of friends that played in bands and I was
always after them to try and play Rush. Most agreed it
was too hard to reproduce the tightness that the boys
achieve. All the drummers I have spoke to I always mention
this one song, and all, I repeat ALL agree on one thing,
NATURAL SCIENCE is the hardest Rush song to play. I can hear
at least four different cymbol beats that are typical Neil
beats, if you know what I mean. I'd be interested to know
what your brother thinks of this song.

In an earlier NMS the line from War Paint talking about the
>mirror always lying was discussed. I never fully understood that. I have my
>ideas, but I am curious to hear what some of you think.

I think this means that self-perception can be deceiving. The
"mirror", i.e. your views of (or opinions about) yourself must by
definition be subjective. You can stare at a mirror all night trying to
decide how you look, but you still end up asking a friend " How do I
look?". The references to the powerful and the wise may simply mean that,
when you feel strongly about something or believe you know what is right,
it's often difficult to see the whole picture or to understand other
people's points of view. In Warpaint, Neil suggests that, to fill in the
missing pieces that are part of both sexes (the song title implies love as
a competition), we should join together instead of trying to "win". Then
we'll all get more complete views of ourselves and others.

>Didacts and Narpets? What do you all think?

To highlight Neil as a drummer, I would pick out the songs with the
most complex rhythms, and the ones where the drum line changes in subtle
ways throughtout the song. For example, the drums in the Weapon are
extremely complex. Other possibilities: La Villa, Xanadu, Marathon,
Freewill.
        Hell, just about anything!

Ah, yes. A favorite subject of mine -- dissecting Neil Peart's lyrics. I
could rave for some time about his ability to pack so much into his writing...
But you all feel this way already, so why belabor the point?

Anyway, a few references that you may wish to look at. As to wheither these
influenced Neil's writing is pure speculation, but it is interesting
reading, nonetheless. I've listed these in order of ease of reading. On
top are those that are good for casual reading, while the last is so
(cryptic, obtuese, beyond experience, "real") that you may wish to take it a
sentence at a time. Here goes:

The Final Encyclopedia, by Gordon R. Dickson [SF with a healthy dose of
philosophy. This is the central "fulcrum" of a series he wrote (known as
the Childe Cycle, or called the Dorsai Series in other places) so if you
have the time, I recommend them all]
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainence, by Robert Pirsig
Just about any book on Zen Buddhism
Tao Teh Ching, by Lao Tzu

Alright, enough reading assignments. But these ought to give you a foundation
for understanding a lot of the eastern philospohy Neil includes in his lyrics.

Now to the original question: "What do you mean, the mirror always lies?"

A fundamental question rears its ugly philosophical head: "What is truth?"

Science (classic empiricism and statistical empiricism) would tell us that
"truth" or reality can only be experieced through the five senses. Most of
western civilization is founded upon this principle.

But eastern civilization holds that the five senses don't enhance our
perceptions of truth, but rather "block" our understanding. Hence the
forgetting of "self" that Buddha, Lao Tzu, and others taught.

A mirror is the greatest lie of all: Not only are you still sensing reality
with the sense of sight, but you are looking at a reflection! Is the
reflection you? Is anything reflection in the mirror "real"? Of course
not! It is all just a visual representation of an empirically gathered set
of data!

We are dealing with some rather heavy concepts here, concepts that are so
radically different from what we are used to thinking that it might make you
feel dizzy, strange, and in touch with another part of the universe. Either
that, or you need to lay off on the drinking.

That's the great thing about his lyrics, though: They can be a mind bending
experience.

This was a little long, so thanks for reading it through. Hope my humble
opinion helps.

Subject: little variation in setlists

before i am run out of town for blasphemy, let me say that i am a 100%
rush fan, have all the albums, collector of boots, etc etc etc.

BUT... i am very disappointed that rush plays the same setlist every
night when they tour. i know there is sometimes variation - like a added
song or two maybe two or three times a tour - but really, i'm talking
about different sets every night out. now (abestos-suit ON), i am going
to see phish this weekend and i'm going both nights. why? because they
play completely different sets every night. no opener (usually) and at
least two sets (over an hour each) and oftentimes there are no repeats on
back-to-back nights. they don't even follow a list on stage - they just
play whatever.

now, i know maybe rush can't have this kind of flexibility with the lights
and video and all - but phish has a great light show (maybe not up to
rush's standards - but still pretty good). and it lends a bit of
unpredictability to the show. yes, some people might get upset if their
favorite song was not played live, but i'd rather miss a few faves and
catch a few i've never heard. plus, it would make boot trading so much
more fun.

i realize that phish and rush are two completely different groups - but
i'm just saying that i wish rush would vary it a bit more. i would think
that they would enjoy it more too - keep them from getting bogged down in
the everyday repeat. does anyone know if they were more spontaneous in
the early days? i'd like to see a show with minimal lights, minimal
effects, and just really really focused on energetic and spontaneous playing.

this is getting long - but i don't want to end before saying that i truly
enjoy seeing rush live - it is just one gripe i have. it didn't stop me
from rocking to every song on the Cp tour. and i think rush is
incredibly precise and energetic on stage - this is not a put-down. just
a thought that occurred to me as i read the daily changing setlists
posted on phish.net.

sorry for the length but i haven't posted in months so forgive me... :)

To whom it may concern,

I am a veteran Rush follower and would tear down the Sacred Walls of Syrinx
to get onto your mailing list "National Midnight Star."

Well, that was the important part. If you have any desire to allow me to
indulge myself...read on!

I happened upon "Syrinx.umd.edu" by typing in various RUSHisms under the FTP
menu and lo and behold...what could this strange FTP be? That there was
actually a place--nay--a veritable Xanadu of information on the Boys--was
beyond my imagination. After returning from the bathroom (I almost peed my
pants) and checking if I was going bald, I continued to browse. Whoever you
are who runs and organizes all that stuff (RUSH MGR?), KUDOS! I have
virtually re-discovered Rush and find myself feeling reborn. I tried to
download as much stuff as I could--sound files, the FAQ sheet (superb
information-gathering), set lists, etc., I was quite addicted and told all my
fellow Rush-heads about it--much to their delight!

I would like to know more about this Rush book...some kind of gift to the
boys from us fans? I have to be a part of it! Any contribution I can
make--PLEASE E-MAIL ME. I have access to Desktop Publishing equipment and
work for a quality printer on Long Island...I may be able to help you--and
would be happy to.

Sorry for the run-on letter. Got time for a good (and short) Rush tale? Two
summers ago, Rush came to Jones Beach--I got four tickets and took my wife (a
fan) and my two brothers (the younger one, 15 at the time, a fan). Well, they
were running this "Food Rush" promotion to help feed the poor or something
and if you bought canned goods to the concert to donate, you got a number of
raffle tickets. Ten tickets were drawn and if your number was called, you and
a guest got Front Row Ticket upgrades! Guess what? My little brother started
screaming and to the FRONT ROW we went. Well...this was almost better than
sex. Mr. Big opened the show, they were good, enough about them. I made eye
contact with Alex and Geddy about half a dozen times (joy!!!) and actually
got to touch Alex's shoe! This was probably in the Top Ten of the greatest
nights of my life. I now know why people actually pay $100, $200 or more for
front row tickets. Needless to say I will be in the front row again...Oh,
yes!

Anyway, thanks for listening to my rantings. Feel free to use any of this in
the next newsletter. Until then, I'll be at the point between darkness and
light!

Hey all.
I've just started up with TNMS and it's pretty goddamn cool so far. I just
got issues 1100, 1101 and 1102--looking forward to reading _Ghost in the
Machine_ So, I just thought I'd respond to a couple of questions I saw,
even though I'm sure other people will too.

Rush Archives is a two-tape/record set (I dunno if it's on CD) that has R,
FBN and COS all on 2 tapes/records. The first two are on the first one and
COS is on the other one. It's a good deal ($$$$-wise) if you don't care
about having the liner notes. :)

and Doug C. wrote:

>FIRST------Why after MP does RUSH not make long songs---say 10-15 min????

I'd love to see one of the long ones again too...I think they stopped
because as their long songs go, The Camera Eye (on MP) is pretty
un-spectacular. Don't all shoot at me at once. I like the song a lot, I
just think their earlier epics (Cygnus X-1, Xanadau, 2112, Natural Science,
etc.) are better. I think they realised that their style was moving
towards more compact songwriting. Of course, if their new album came into
the stores with a song reading 20:30 I would rejoice...

>SECOND-------Is Jacobs Ladder a cover----"Done a lomg time ago by TC
>Broonsey"

T.C. Broonsey refers to Terry Brown (Broon), their erstwhile producer. I
think it's just a joke--especially after looking at the liner notes. It
gives the usual credits for songwriting in the PeW cover.

>THIRD-----What is saind in Didect and Narpets while Neil is banging on the

Check out the Rush FAQ for a few opinions on this. The NMS can direct you
on getting the FAQ.

Hell yeah!

One other thing...
Do any of you have any connections to the Rush TAB site? I've been there a
few times and even uploaded bass transcriptions for Prime Mover and Enemy
Within. Just wondering if any of you know who runs it or whatever...jus'
curious.

Sorry for babbling on so.

I find people's response to Ecolyn and Dream Theater fascinating. I
recently went out and bouth DT's 2nd and 3rd albums and Ecolyn's 1st nation
release based on someone one the net who said if you love Rush (I do) then
you'll love these. Well I put in the Echolyn album and said "Wow, a bad
that is obviously drawn right out of the Rush/Yes tradition!" I loved it.
I listen to the two DT albums and said "Is this a joke? This is really
medeocre." I for one can't even find the vaguest relationship between DT
and Rush except that DT's songs are obviously not intended to be commercial
successes being long and disjointed rythmically. Actually Rush/Echolyn
changes are fluid and complimentary while DT sounds like they spliced two
different songs together. Can anyone email me and point out similarities
or disucss this. I mean the prevalent chunk, chunk guitar doesn't sound
like Rush and when the drummer does that bass roll in the middle of songs I
just roll on the floor laughing, thinking couldn't he have thought of
something better to play than that. I'd love to dicuss this, but don't
flame me or fill up the list. Just email me and discuss politley. I don't
hate DT, just don't see anything special about them. I listen to them
while crusing sometimes.

As has already been pointed out, Archives is the collection of Rush's
first three albums in one set. I hope that if it has been released
on CD that a better job was done than when the tape came out. The
three record set was reduced to two tapes. This meant that new
places had to be found to divide the sides. Rather than slightly
reorder the songs so that they fit the demands of the length of the
tapes' sides, it was decided by someone (who obviously was not only
not a Rush fan, but someone with no musical sensability at all) that
one side should end in the MIDDLE of The Necromancer (just after the
spoken introduction to part two and the drum bit that preceeds the
introduction of the guitar). I hope that more recent editions of the
tapes have been changed as well. I can't believe that this was even
allowed to happen in the first place. Probably just an extension
of the same corporate mentality that allows songs to be butchered so
that they are the "right" length for the single release.

Subject: Peart makes the LITERARY BIG TIME!!!

I got this information from a NYT Book Review (6/11/95) of D. Coupland's
latest novel, _Microserfs_. This book describes the lives of several GenX
computer nerds who are described in terms of Jeopardy categories. One of
the starring nerds named Michael claims as his category "Neil Peart" (the
Times reviewer adds, "drummer for Rush").

There is no escaping it; our band will always be associated with
techno-nerds, even as they beat a path toward their 30s and the group
itself moves into their 40s. Anyone know of any other Rush references in
the book? It reminds me of something one of the Beastie Boys said in
Rolling Stone about a year ago -- something like, "I don't understand
white people. They listen to groups like Vanilla Ice and Rush."

p.s.: Did the Harvard Lampoon ever print an edition with pictures of the
Boyz after their award? I recently called their offices and they said
they never did, though one can hardly be sure that you're getting a
straight answer from whoever answers the phone.

Subject: Anyone for Soda and Cheese?

I hope everyone's keeping busy during this impossibly frustrating
no-news-no-album-no-tour span; y'know, a watched Peart never toils.

<stupid grin>

I remember thinking six months ago that it was rather pathetic that I,
at the time, was looking forward to Alex's (probable?) ten-minute
appearance at Kumbaya in September. I feel no less pathetic, now that
it's only a couple of months away, because now I'm _really_ excited.

Well, perhaps Alex will take that opportunity to debut his solo
material. After his problems with All Along the Watchtower last year
(equipment trouble, I insist), I think he'd welcome the chance to play
something that people aren't so awfully familiar with.

(Lerxstophiles, unite. :)

Anyhow, to the real reason for this post. I bought a couple of Primus
albums (Pork Soda, Sailing the Seas of Cheese) a few months ago, on a
lark. I like the attitude and humour, but I just can't get into the
music, you know, and I haven't listened to either album for months.

Anyhow, I had this brilliant (aka stupid) idea, just a couple of minutes
ago: perhaps someone would be willing to trade a bit of footwear (or is
that footware?) for these CDs? I don't know, maybe it IS stupid, but it
sounds like it would be a good deal; it'd cost "you" the price of a
couple of blank audio tapes and a few seconds of your time to press the
magical red button, and you'd get two shiny, nearly-new CDs.

I'm not asking for anything rare! I only have one boot (and yes, that's a
miserable feeling), _Northern Heroes_. Recent, old, I don't give a damn!
I'd just like to get something in exchange for this (sorry, Primus fans)
dead weight.

Reply at will. I'll be moving cross-country within the month, so any
belated e-mail can expect... a very belated (and bloated) reply.

Well, take care, everyone.

Subject: ex-rabbits

Hi everybody,

I sincerely hope that this isn't going to be a new thread, but I thought
I'd share this with y'all.

Picture this: a beautiful day, and I'm merrily motoring along on a German
autobahn in my newly acquired automobile. I'm doing about 85 mph, windows
down and side B of 2112 on the stereo. I'm changing lanes to pass a slower
car when an overpass comes up. Suddenly, I see in the middle of my lane
a little rabbit crossing, oblivious of the approaching cars and looming
danger. The options are crashing against the overpass, against the car I'm
passing or ... You get the idea. I try to swerve just a little bit but
then a sickening thud-dum mixes with ' A Passage to Bangkok '. Exit the
rabbit. First thought is, poor little critter. There was nothing I could
do, still I'm feeling guilty. Second thought: "You know how that rabbit
feels, going under your speeding wheels" from 'Between the Wheels'.
Now I know, and it's not pretty.

Anyways, the rest of the trip was beautiful, I have made a tape with more
obscure Rush songs, like 'I think I'm going Bald', 'Entre Nous', 'Prime
Mover' and 'Kid Gloves' on it. Most excellent.

Well, that's all for now; enjoy yourself!

Hans

PS 2 weeks ago I saw the Pat Metheny Group in concert - very impressive indeed!

Hi I'm new to the newsletter and have a question and a possible
correction to a Rush fact that appears on the Rush FAQ..
First the correction. The question asked pretained to `who does the
narration on `The Necromancer' on COS?'. The Answer printed is Neil Peart.
However, one day while messing around with my LP of COS. I turned the speed
up to 45 and said "Oh My Gosh..that's Geddy!". So if you want to check it
out be my guest for all those who still have LP's.
OK, my question is....On the vinyl bootleg called `Through Any
Window 'which was put out from the PoW tour, where is the place and what is
the date of this show. If have seen two different suggestions for this.
Please help me out. Thanks in advance.

Subject: Limelight Video

I just saw a version of the Limelight video that I had never seen
before. It was aired on Latino MTV (much better than the US version),
and this one was shot in LeStudio in what looks like the middle of the
recording process (a la Vital Signs). It also has some really old live
footage mixed in (which doesn't really go with the rest of it). I was
wondering how many people have seen this version and if there is other
LeStudio stuff on video (I love the behind the scenes kind of
     thing!)...

Subject: Question for highschool Rush fans!!l

Hey all,

I was paging through some of my old RUSH scrapbooks the other
night (I save *EVERYTHING* i.e articles, pictures, reviews, ticket stubs
etc...) Anyway, I got to a picture of my high-school days and began
reminiscing about my senior year of highschool which saw the release
of Power Windows. I can recall everyone going absolutely nuts over it
when it came out! Even the cheerleaders and the Bon-Jovi type guys
we're all scrambling for tickets when they came to town (Washington D.C).
I went to a fairly affluent suburbian high school and it was weird because
*everyone* was into them. From the freaks and the jocks to the nerds and
the rich kids. I'm 25 now and still into Rush as much as when I first heard
Moving Pictures in 6th grade. My question to those of you in highschool
right now is: What is the general Rush attitude these days? I know that
you all are probably hardcore fans, but what about the average 16 ot 17
year old? Have Rush faded into obscurity with the younger crowd or
are they still widely recognized? Do the Pearl Jam type fans get into
them? I'm dying to know because when I was in high-school during
the Signals, Grace, Power Windows era, *everyone* was into them.
Please lemme know. Thanks guys!

Subject: Echolyn. . . again!

There's been so much talk about Echolyn lately on the NMS that when I
came across "As the World" in the used CD bin, I just had to grab it.

My opinion? Not bad at all! I really liked it, though Rush really
didn't come to mind when I listened to it. Reminded me of Yes and
ELP. The singer reminds me of the guy who sang on Yes' "Tormato"
album, and really reminds me of ELP (so who was the singer, Emerson,
Lake or Palmer?).

Some of the guitar parts reminded me of Genesis from "The Lamb Lies
Down on Broadway," but weren't nearly as aggressive as Alex Lifeson's
best work.

It was funny that I picked this up right after the Rush history which
we just read on the NMS. It seems there are two groups of Rush fans
as pointed out in in that worthy article: Heavy Metal fans, and
converted Yes fans. I'm not too sure the Heavy Metal types will like
Echolyn, but I think the Yes fans will feel they've been transported
back to the '70's.

Whoa! I love Counterparts. I'm pretty new to TNMS but I don't remember
reading any negative stuff - unless that was when it was first released. I
think Counterparts is their best album since Power Windows (still my
favorite). The songs are great, there are guitar solos. I love it. :)
