IT LIVES!!!

As it always seems to happen (and I'm sure some of you are not in the least
surprised), we are not (quite) dead! In moving to a new location at work, and
assuming new responsibilities (like configuring routers and csu/dsu's) I've
been reptty busy. It makes the time at work fly by, but leaves little time for
anything else.

I've been working on a processing program on another machine (yyz.com) that
can handle perl; you may have noticed mailings coming from here...
I'm trying to automate it as best as I can, I just processed about 100
requests! It'll take me some time to slog through the old mail, just give me
some time. Also, it may turn out that you have multiple subscriptions, I'm
trying to work on a fix for that but in the meantime if you notice you're
getting dupes lemme know and I'll check for you.

Now, on with the show...

Subject: RUSH FAQ

	Hello Rush Fans!!!!

This being my first post to TNMS - I had to sit for a while and
think 'what do I know about RUSH that others may not...', so I decided to
share my great wisdom with a small FAQ list:

	1) Rocinante is not just the name of the ship that went to Cyngus X-1,
but also the name of Don Quixote's (sp?) imaginary horse.

	2) Neil Peart plays the drums with the WRONG ends of his sticks
(he kept breaking off the tips)

	3) If you want the complete lyrics (and then some) to 2112, get
	   the record album.

	4) The triangle intro to YYZ is actually morris code for
YYZPKQZ (take it for what it's worth)

I would also ask for a pearl of wisdom from all the other Rush
fans out there...

What exactly does Alex Lifeson sing on the VHS tape A SHOW OF
HANDS during LA Villa Strangletto?

Why don't members of Rush (including crew and producers) post to
here and clear up some discussions once and for all?

What the hell does YKYWQ$#@$ (whatever) stand for? If I don't
know then there must be someone else who doesn't either.

	Well, enough from me.

Subject: Are the Black Crowes Rush Fans ???

Yo, fellow Rushies!

Dino here. Just this past Friday night I saw the Black Crowes in Little
Rock (it was an *excellent* show, BTW!). If you've ever seen a BC concert, you
know that a curtain hides the band's equipment. The curtain is pulled back once
the guys start into their first song. Well... my wife and I were sitting at a
fair distance from the stage, so I got out my binoculars to take a look at the
stage set-up. Directly behind the drummer's kit was a bank of speakers. I
panned to the top of the speakers, and much to my surprise was a small toy
rabbit perched in a similar manner to the inflatable rabbits in Rush's shows!
The BC rabbit looked to be about 2 feet tall. Needless to say, I couldn't help
but wonder if the Crowes are fans of Rush in any way. Their music is quite
different from Rush's as they tend to play almost straight blues to rhythm-and-
blues. The BC drummer is very good, but in no way does his playing resemble
Neil's. I just found the rabbit to be very intriguing.

BTW, sometimes mothers-in-law can be really great people even though
they have no idea that they've done something special for you. My m-i-l is the
quintessential "Flea Market Queen." Several weeks ago, she bought me this
t-shirt that had pictures of rock musicians on the front and back. There were
each of the Beatles, Eric Clapton, the members of Led Zep-- even Cat Stevens!
But much to my shock and utter pleasure were pictures of Geddy, Alex, and Neil!
How lucky can one man get??!!

Enough for now. I didn't get a chance to do my Friday Night Rock Thang
because of the Black Crowes concert, so I'm having RWS (Rush Withdrawal
Syndrome)! I need a quick fix.

	Later Dudes y Dudettes!

This is probably in the FAQ, but Neil joined the band just after the first
album, was released. My guess is that, releived of writing lyrics( such as
'come on baby, it's a quarter to eight, I feel I'm in the mood'), alex and
geddy were able to concentrate on the stuff they do best - making music(man!).
Also, with neil being infinitely more talented than john rutsey, they were
free to try more complex tunes.

>>Ah, censorship. First the liberals try to censor what we hear >>on the

so proud. <g>

I never meant to advocate censorship in any way. I think Rush Limbaugh should
be allowed to stay on the air. His lies keep progressives in their toes and
yahoos off the streets.

And as far as the Fairness Doctrine is concerned it's just a matter of
leveling the playing field in light of massive corporate takeover of the
media, and it's failing.

And I really don't feel that keeping a forum on a topic that it exists to
serve is censorship. It's bringing a topic into focus.

I could really care less if Mr. Peart is proud or not. Neil is a rock star. A
ROCK STAR!!! A very talented one but still a rock star. No matter how
brilliant he may be, or we make him out to be he writes songs for a living.
Hes not a professer, a politician, or a diplomat.

If you want politics I suggest Noam Chomsky or William Greider.

Greetings fellow rush heads...
Again my virgin message so be gentle...I was pondering the next Rush
Album and here's my two cents..I am an astronomer so I really enjoy the
lyrics dealing with space and science and I am really getting sick of no
long songs there all under 6minutes! So I think the next album should be
a double length job with four songs of 25+ minutes each a virtual
masterpiece of production. Three of the pieces will be written by each
of the boys solo and the last odyssey will be a collaborative effort
finished in the studio much like Hemispheres was...Which is also the last
masterpiece written...(flame me later) From what I have read they must
have really hated that experience of having to complete the Cygnus X-1
story that They took a vow never to do it again! It's a shame because
that's when they were at their best musically and lyrically.(spelling)
Also regarding the ultra discs of MP I didn't notice that much of a
difference thank god I didn't shell out the $30 I got it at xmas. Lastly
here's my idea for a catchy bumper sticker...Listen to RUSH...the band,
not the man-Geddy, Alex, & Neil.****************

First, a big thanks to Rich Armstrong for his stats on the list members.
6% of us here in England, and Alex says they still might not make it over
here again - This *SUCKS* bigtime! Every tour they've done here must have
made money (They sold out Wembley for two nights before!). C'mon guys,
make the effort and get here!

In response to John Mac Lean's post, having not seen the 1986 show,
I can't confirm/deny, but I remember hearing Where's My Thing played over
a load of video clips at the end of the WWF's Summerslam a few years back.
And when MTV did a Terminator 2 special, I think they used the intro to
Body Electric, but I'm not sure on this; anyone else remember?

Subject: Neil's Drum Kit

Hello, Rush fans! This is my first posting to the NMS so I hope I don't
sound too ridiculous. I have been a devout Rush fan for many years, and I
have attended a couple of their shows in New York and Philadelphia. My
friends and I have spent countless hours listening to and dissecting Rush's
music, and I was very pleased when I stumbled upon the Rush home page. It
is a very cool place, and my thanks go out to everyone involved with it.
Anyhow, down to some business. I was reading the article posted by
greenpd0@seraph1.sewanee.edu (Paul Greene) in the Tuesday May 9 issue of the
NMS regarding Neil's drum kit. It was fairly thorough but I figured I'd toss
in a couple of extra things (since I too fiddle around with the drums and I
like to keep tabs on what he is playing). Neil used to use a double bass
drum set-up. Since "Roll the Bones" he has shifted to a single bass and
uses a double pedal with it. In a Modern Drummer magazine interview, Neil
said that this was because it was easier to tune one drum than matching two
separate ones. He has also added a floor tom to his left next to and a
little behind his hi-hat. This allowed him to get some of the cool drum
patterns like that which he used in 'Bravado,' since his left hand was able to
move easily between hi-hats and floor tom.
Of course, Neil uses an extensive collection of acoustic and electronic
percussion. He usually has a wide assortment of cowbells (for different
pitches), wind chimes (for decent effects like the opening of 'Xanadu'), jam
blocks, vibra-slaps, triangles, etc. The key to Neil's playing is his
ability to find patterns that are entertaining to listen to but fit well
with the song (just give a listen to some of his stuff in 'La Villa
Strangiato' for some good examples).
I'm sorry, I didn't mean to ramble on like this but it usually seems to
happen when I start talking about Rush. Thanks again to everyone involved
with the NMS and I hope to talk to you all again soon.

No, John Mac Lean did not dream it. The CBS show 1986 did indeed use
the instrumental section of "Mystic Rhythms" as its theme music and I
also remember them dropping it in the last few episodes. It was great
while it lasted.

On another subject... I just listened to the first album the other
night for the first time in probably a year or two. What a great album!
Anyone, esp. Rush fans, who rag on it have to remember that it was a
debut album and they were 20 or 21 when they recorded it. In that
context, it's one hell of a start. So much of what they later became is
there (along with many of their influences, esp. Zep). What I found
interesting is how grooved the bass is. As they got "artier," it seems
like Geddy's style changed and has only come back to those same kind of
grooves in recent years as the songs have shortened and become more
rhythmic. Anyway...just a few thoughts.

playing, and Buddy is probably the greatest ever on the kit. If you have a

First of all, thanks to those who wrote/paraphrased the interview with Alex
in the Guitarist mag. My friend is scouring the racks this morning for a
copy! I think it's very interesting to hear about his solo work and the
idea of pulling some of the greats like Farewell to Kings out of the hamper
for a fresh '95 approach!!

Secondly, these was mention of King Crimson in the last NMS and I wanted to
direct your attention to their latest release, 'THRAK'. This is a MONSTER
album and is a must-buy for anyone wanting to hear what music will sound
like in 10 years. ;-) Really . . . it's VERY good!

My comments on the two who mentioned KC .

>the Discipline-era incarnation of

>does it much better).

Don't let this scare you if you hate Primus. Most Rush fans would find
these three albums to be fantastic. (Discipline, Beat, 3 of a Perfect Pair)
The playing is beautifully complex and interesting, yet fairly accessible
for those of us with less adventurous significant others. If you don't know
what a collaboration between 4 virtuosos like Fripp, Belew, Levin, and
Bruford could sould like, you'll be in for a treat.

Well, that is their first album (1969) and DID influence the bands you
mentioned, but King Crimson has evolved much through the years. If you are
interested in more details, email me. Robert Fripp is the only constant and
if you are familiar with his work or his collaborations with Eno, Andy
Summers, David Sylvian, and Peter Gabriel, you know PART of what KC has
done. The latest King Crimson is doing things I've wanted Rush to persue
since the p/g days . . .

I can definitely say that Jerry is not influenced by Rush or Neil
in any shape or form! I was lucky enough to meet King's X after a
gig they played here in Nottingham back in '91, and I spent 20
minutes talking with Jerry. I asked him about his drumming, and if
he was influenced by Neil Peart. He said a definite NO! He then said
he was influenced mainly by John Bonham. I can't comment on Ty's or

Hail, Hail, all Rush Fans Everywhere!

In response to John MacLean in Issue #1093 of TNMS, yes indeed I *do*
remember the show "1986," but only fairly vaguely. It seems to me that it was a
news magazine in much the same vein as "48 Hours" or "Primetime Live." I do not
recall the host or network-- as my dinosaur pea brain doesn't have the capacity
for memory that distant-- but I certainly recall the show's musical theme being
non other than "Mystic Rhythms." You were dead-on about where the music faded
and the show itself began. I had put that one in the distant recesses of my
old, feeble mind. Thanks for the recall!

PS: Speaking of Dinosaur Rock, I'm looking forward to seeing the Eagles this

I was reading the lastest issue of Rolling Stone, and in the interview
with the drummer from Metallica (sorry forgot the name) he states
something along the lines of the reason we put out albums every three
or four years, is because they don't want to run dry musically.
However groups like Rush and The Rolling Stones, can do that.
I don't have the article here in front of me, but it did go
something like that. Also, this week I saw a commercial for the
Z-Rock franchise in our area, and The commercial went like "We play
more (insert a bunch of band names here), Rush." That was a surprise
considering I don't hear that much Rush on Z-Rock.

Hope I didn't bore anyone out there.

In response to j.w. Cleveland's post in #1093 about good beginner-level
guitar songs:

Hit the gopher site at syrinx.umd.edu 2112 and pick up the tabs for these
(if they have 'em):

Working Man, In The Mood, Here Again, Need Some Love; all these provide
some basic instruction on power-chording and blues riffing. Great rock
and roll, besides.

Also recommended: Fly By Night, Best I Can, I Think I'm Going Bald, 2112:
Overture/Temples of Syrinx (you can pretty much figure out the rest of the
entire track from these two), Something For Nothing, Circumstances, etc...

>From AFTK on, Alex's guitar parts get trickier: start with Tom Sawyer and
Limelight to get used to counting in odd time. I'd go on to Jacob's
Ladder and Entre Nous from there, and just work your way up to the 80's
and 90's.

Keep in mind, I'm only a useless bass player, and I can only recommend
what I know of Alex's. Chances are I've skipped something, so I apologize
if this isn't the best list. But give these a shot and see what happens.
If you download them off the gopher site, you'll have to know how to read
tabulature (not hard--check any issue of Guitar For The Practicing
Musician. They include a chart of tab symbols and stuff).

Good luck and good playing!

Hello out there!

I'd like to say thanks to Dave Brenchley from the U.K. for posting
the info that appeared in Guitarist on Alex's solo project. After
reading several posts in past NMS issues about Sebastian Bach singing on
the album, I must say I was greatly relieved to hear Alex say he hadn't
given
much thought to vocals. I can't for the life of me imagine Alex calling
Sebastian up and saying,"Sebastian, how 'bout laying down some vocal
tracks on my solo album?" I have the utmost respect for Alex as a player
and a person, but absolutely none for Sebastian Bach. I had the
missfortune of seeing Skid Row "Skid Fucking Row" in the words of
Sebastian himself, open for Aerosmith, and he was a world class obnoxious
jerk. Does anyone else have a hard time picturing Alex and Sebastian
Bach working together, or am I so prejudiced against poor Sebastian that
I've lost my openmindedness?

P.S. I remember Connie Chung's show using Mystic Rhythms for an intro.

Rush has taught me alot about music appreciation, and thats because they
are a challenging band. They challenge themselves, and they challenge
their audience. I'd say that if any of these songs was something you
could like right off the bat, then either the guys happened to write a
masterpiece or you were being cheated.
In other words, maybe you need to explore these songs, learn to
understand what it is about them that thousands of others love. There
must be something there.

thought that Prelude Hemispheres (with the lights out and an
extended opening crescendo) would be an excellent choice.
Anyway, I was wondering whatever happened. Did they do the

Dear NMSers,

I, too, saw the Van Halen concert. I am not a drummer (nor do I possess
any type of rhythm whatsoever) but the last part of Alex Van Halen's solo did
remind me quite a bit of Neil's solo espc. the sequenced horns, lights and
effects. Once I made this connection I was not quite impressed as I was at
the beginning of the solo.

Anyway, the song "Amsterdam" is way cool. The guitar riffs remind me of
"Cabo Wabo." Check it out if you have not yet heard it.

On a completely different note, I saw a post in NMS a few months ago (I
apologize in advance to whoever posted it, I don't remember who you are)
about the song "Tai Shan." AT the end of the song Amy Mann sings something
in the background but I cannot discern what (if anything) what she is saying.
I never saw a followup to this post> If there was one, I missed it.

Does anyone know what she is saying? (Or am I just crazy??)

Take care (Good luck on finals to our 23% of subscribers who are college

Just takin' some time to hopefully put this whole "Hitler" thing to rest,
so listen up Daniel and anyone else who got their knickers all knotted up.
"Why are we here? Because we're here! Roll the Bones!" I think this is
trying to say that people shouldn't waste time trying to figure it out
(i.e all the different religions and "God" theories), but should instead
accept it and live their lives. Relating this to "Why did Hitler kill
Jews? Because he did. Roll the Bones," I would say people shouldn't dwell
on these past atrocities, but should accept it- learn from it- and for
Christ's sweet sake, move on! If this is blasphemous, anti-semitic and
disgusting (as Daniel says) then so be it!....if this is how you CHOOSE
to interpret it.

>Kevin wrote: Anyone know what the _actual_ make was that is

"Barchetta" is an affectionate nickname for the 166, a Ferrari from the
1950's. Neil was almost certainly referring to this car. It was the car that
really put Ferrari on the map as a car company. In the story that Red
Barchetta is based on the car was an MGB. We can surmise that the car in the
song was of Itilian origin though since cars in that era were colored in the
national color to make identification easier: Germany was silver, Great
Britian was British racing green, and Italy was "blood red".

Also, Grady asked:
>I'm interested in knowing what kinds of cars Alex, Geddy and Neil
>own/drive

I asked the same thing a few months ago and received four nice responses. To
summarize: The only thing anyone knew for sure was that Alex has owned a
Mercedes with a fabulous sound system. There was an article about this car in
a car stereo mag that is available at syrinx. In the "heard from reliable
source" category: Alex has owned a Ferrari (unknown model), Geddy has owned
both a Mercedes, a Porsche Turbo (probably a 911), and perhaps a Ferrari as
well, and Neil has owned a Mercedes.

If I were in charge of advising the band members what to buy, I would
recommend for Alex a Mclaren F1 since it has a top speed of 24omph and would
therefore fit his love of fast things, I would recommend a Ferrari 456 for
Geddy since it is classy, aesthetically beautiful and it has a backseat for
the kids. Plus it will do 190 when asked to. For Neil, I think it would be a
Range Rover with a roof rack for the bikes. To get away from it all.

Hello one and all,

On this topic of misunderstood lyrics, In "Subdivisions", I used to
hear "A planet streaks on a quiet night" instead of the more popular
"of lighted streets on a quiet night" I still sign it the wrong way on
purposehted streets on a quiet night". I still sing it that way in the
shower - on purpose. Oh yeah one other comes to mind.

I used to think that line that goes "There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the tree" actually went
" I had to bring the goat, he's not well"
                       "I only `ope `e don't go on the carpet"

Kudos to Steve Horowitz, I used to put YYZ as my initials on "Tempest"
The game at the end of the Subdivisions video), and my all time Favorite
Frogger. a great game whose demise forced me into months of electric
(eel) shock therapy.

I've tried to ignore this annoying thread, everytime I see a YKYARFW,
I want to deposit my just eaten lunch into the closet suitable receptacle,
but here goes YK......
   Nah,

A darker heavier RUSH album..... hmmmm .... sounds ok to me, as
Thanks to Dave for the info on the Alex interview. I hope more guitars
does not mean that we get a whole album of "SIO", my least fav from Cp,
but still far better than Terry Jacks- "Seasons in the Sun" I'll wager.

  Blast off!

"We had joy we had fun we had seasons in the sun
