Raping women and having wars is something the human race has been doing
since day 1, also. Doesn't make it right. The premise behind [my]
vegetarianism is that our intellect endows us with the ability to
transcend our nature--not to merely rationalize it.

Is your objection to the anonymity associated with the process of buying
commercial meat, or to the interesting treatment it receives before and
after slaughter? Of course, you realize what an environmental
catastrophe it would be if everyone in [your favorite Western nation
here] were to have first-hand knowledge of where his/her food came from.
[Please don't read this as a flame. But a number of things you said in
your article rubbed me the wrong way.]

It seems to me that this would be the biggest boon to vegetarianism
the movement has ever seen...

This soup is very filling and has almost all the food groups in it!
Black Bean Soup
1 can black beans 12oz? 1 can chicken broth 12oz?
1 onion, chopped 2 cloves
1/2 green pepper, chopped 1 stalk celery, chopped
cumin, to taste 2 cloves garlic, chopped
unsalted tortilla chips, crushed fresh cilantro, to taste
monterey jack cheese, shredded or thinly sliced
Combine all ingredients except chips and cheese. Heat to boiling, then
simmer for 10 minutes. To serve, place some chips and cheese in a bowl
and pour soup over.
Serves 2 hungry people or 3 normal people, easily doubled.
I have made this while camping several times and have gotten rave reviews.
I tried using regular salted chips and they were too salty! Leftover
taco shells do fine too. Enjoy!

Hmmm...
I'm not quite sure to whom this is going; 's my first time replying on
Usenet.
Anyway, this a reply to Andy (I forget the last name)'s assertion that
vinyl, and many other leather substitutes used in shoe making, are animal
derived. To the best of my knowledge this is not true. Admittedly, they pro-
bably cause damage to our environment in production, so they're a mixed bag
anyway.
A good way to find out for sure about the animal ingredients issue
would be to look at the ads in the back of an issue of the Vegetarian Times.
I have a catalogue of non-leather formal wear and hiking-type stuff which I
obtained by responding to one such advertisement (I forget its name). The
problem of obtaining "creulty-free" products is an old one, and it appears
that
a lot of veg.'s have found their own solutions. Mine has been a pair of white
all-cotton denim sneakerish shoes I bought at a BASS outlet a year-and-a-half
ago. They've stood a lot of abuse, are pretty comfortable, and look fairly
'respectable'. Probably shoes made by a company which has nothing to do with
leather/animal products are a better idea. The companies I referred to above
all provide info about what they do - most claim to perform no animal testing
and use no animal ingredients. Co-ops sometimes have something to offer,
too.
Just a thought...

Forgive me for not including quotes from the letter I'm responding to (I don't
know how to yet).
I've seen a horde of letters insisting that cats cannot live healthily on a
vegetarian diet; while this is largely true, it overlooks the possibility of
synthesizing(sp?) the various materials which cats can ordinarily obtain only
from meat. It also overlooks the fact that most vegetarians like animals a
lot;
they like to have pets around, including cats, so the problem of how to feed a
cat without killing isn't a new one.
There's a company in California which makes a product they call
Vegecat. They're called Harbingers of a New Age and they claim, in a fairly
detailed pamphlet which they send out free of charge, that it can meet all of
the nutritional requirements of cats. It sounds charming (they provide a
recipe book -- the food is mixed with various ordinary grocerystore-type items
which you have to COOK for kitty) and is supported by the affirmations of
cat owners and veternarians(sp-again).I admit that I've never tried it - I
don't have a cat - but it sounds like a resonable idea. My only worry is that
there may be substances present in meat which vet. science hasn't noticed as a
cat essential; such as those might not be provided in Vegecat. Still, it has
been around for a few years, with no complaint that I'm aware of. Perhaps
Cornell's school of Ag. and Animal Husbandry, or some other animal-care
research organization knows more about it, yes? 8-)
Anyways, some of you animal lovers might do well to check it out - Vegecat is
advertized in Vegetarian Times. I have a brochure of theirs somewhere. If I
find it, I'll post more info.
