In any system of initiation there should be a structure designed
to represent the Universe in full. It should be a complete
structure within itself, designed to represent internally and
externally every possible manifestation of soul, mind, and body,
including within itself all of the forces and laws of Nature. It
must represent the entire process of spiritual evolution and
involution, and demonstrate that process in a systematic form.
These things are necesarry to initiation, as the Magician must
fully understand and cultivate every part of his being.
In the Science of the Qabalah there is a symbolic representation
of the microcosmic and macrocosmic parts of the Universe. This
symbol is known as the Tree of Life. The Tree of Life is the
model that the Qabalists use to demonstrate the various aspects
of God, Man, and Nature. The doctrine of the Tree encompasses the
entire Order of the Universe, from the Divine world to the
Physical world, from the Microcosm to the Macrocosm. It
symbolically defines the Qabalistic doctrine of Creation and the
cosmic process of Divine Evolution. As such, it is a most
suitable structure upon which to base a system of initiation.
In the Thelemic Order of the Golden Dawn there is a hermetic
system of Self-Initiation for those aspirants who wish to utilize
a practical method and means of initiating themselves into the
Mysteries of the Universe. It is based on the twenty-two Major
Arcana of the Tarot as represented by the twenty-two Paths on the
Qabalistic Tree of Life. It is therefore a system by which the
Magician may gain knowledge and mastery over the internal
microcosmic forces of his own nature. It allows him to advance at
his own pace and perform those practices that are necessary to
promote his own personal progress and attain the essential
expression of his own True Will. This system is, in fact, the
Secret Doctorine of the Qabalah as represented by the Thelemic
Order of the Golden Dawn.
In this system of Self-Initiation, the initiate progresses
through the Paths individually, ascending the Tree of Life to the
Crown of Illumination. He can spend any amount of time on any
Path, depending on the needs of his own internal nature. It gives
him the freedom to perform any work or practices that he feels
are essential to enhance and expand his Self-Initiation. The
twenty-two Major Arcana (Major Secrets) are used to represent the
Paths as they have a direct relationship to the individual forces
of the Paths, and are useful as pictorial symbols of the force
and nature of each Path. They are themselves structured and
designed to represent the forces of the Paths, and are therefore
properly attributed to this type of working. The object of the
Thelemic Order of the Golden Dawn is the object of any practical
system of Self-Initiation, to allow the Magician to subjectively
experience and understand the subtle forces in himself and in
Nature. With the proper understanding of these forces true
initiation can take place and more exalted areas of consciousness
can be accessed.
